Let His Confidence become our confidence today as we explore His Word.I. Confidence in the Word of GodA. The Word of God Demands Our Diligence
Hebrews 4:11 NASB95 11 Therefore let us be diligent to enter that rest, so that no one will fall, through following the same example of disobedience.Therefore. Since we by faith we rest from our own works, we enter into God’s rest.Review Rest, 3 kinds—Rest of Salvation. Not by works. We rest in Jesus Christ and His finished work.Rest of Sanctification. The rest from the self-life. Our christian life is to be lived by faith. Sometimes called the faith-life rest.Rest of the Kingdom. When someone who has been a slave of sin for all their lives, realizes that rest is available, they should exert every effort, give everything they have to enter into that rest.Jesus talked about this in parables.Matthew 13:44 NASB95 44 “The kingdom of heaven is like a treasure hidden in the field, which a man found and hid again; and from joy over it he goes and sells all that he has and buys that field.Matthew 13:45–46 NASB95 45 “Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a merchant seeking fine pearls, 46 and upon finding one pearl of great value, he went and sold all that he had and bought it.Fall through: Like the Israelites looking back to the meat and delecacies of Egypt. Like Lot’s wife looking back to home in Sodom before she was turned to salt. Don’t fail to enter His rest because you are too lazy to seek it and don’t fail to enter His rest because because you have exchanged it for the cheap substitute of the ease and pleasure of this life. That is not true rest. It will all be destroyed because it is filthy and distorted.—Arthur PinkAn Exposition of Hebrews Chapter 18: Christ Superior to Joshua (Heb. 4:11–16)It means to look back to and long for the flesh-pots of Egypt. Ah, my reader, to which does your daily life witness? to the fact that you have not yet entered your “rest,” or that you have found a substitute for it here? If so, heed that solemn word, “Arise ye, and depart for this is not your rest: because it is polluted, it shall destroy, even with a sore destruction”
B. The Word of God Judges UsHebrews 4:12 NASB95 12 For the word of God is living and active and sharper than any two-edged sword, and piercing as far as the division of soul and spirit, of both joints and marrow, and able to judge the thoughts and intentions of the heart. These unbelieving Jews had heard the Word of God preached many times so they were without excuse. When they stand before the judgement of God it is that same Word of God that will pierce them and condemn them.Joints connect bone to bone. A sharp knife can separate bone from bone.Marrow is on the inside of the bone. A scalpel can separate bone from marrow. The Bible is like a spiritual scalpel that can separate our motives and intentions from our decisions.10 CommandmentsExodus 20:3–17 NASB95 3 “You shall have no other gods before Me. 4 “You shall not make for yourself an idol, or any likeness of what is in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the water under the earth. 5 “You shall not worship them or serve them; for I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children, on the third and the fourth generations of those who hate Me, 6 but showing lovingkindness to thousands, to those who love Me and keep My commandments. 7 “You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain, for the Lord will not leave him unpunished who takes His name in vain. 8 “Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy. 9 “Six days you shall labor and do all your work, 10 but the seventh day is a sabbath of the Lord your God; in it you shall not do any work, you or your son or your daughter, your male or your female servant or your cattle or your sojourner who stays with you. 11 “For in six days the Lord made the heavens and the earth, the sea and all that is in them, and rested on the seventh day; therefore the Lord blessed the sabbath day and made it holy. 12 “Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be prolonged in the land which the Lord your God gives you. 13 “You shall not murder. 14 “You shall not commit adultery. 15 “You shall not steal. 16 “You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor. 17 “You shall not covet your neighbor’s house; you shall not covet your neighbor’s wife or his male servant or his female servant or his ox or his donkey or anything that belongs to your neighbor.”Better to have the Word of God do its work now, today, while there is hope than to wait until it dissects your motives for the purpose of judgement.Acts 2:36–37 NASB95 36 “Therefore let all the house of Israel know for certain that God has made Him both Lord and Christ—this Jesus whom you crucified.” 37 Now when they heard this, they were pierced to the heart, and said to Peter and the rest of the apostles, “Brethren, what shall we do?”—PinkAn Exposition of Hebrews Chapter 18: Christ Superior to Joshua (Heb. 4:11–16)Ere passing on let us earnestly press upon the reader what has just been before us, and ask, has the Word of God thus “pierced” you? Has it penetrated, as no word from man ever has, into your innermost being? Has it exposed the workings of your wicked heart? Has it detected to you the sink of iniquity which dwells within? Make no mistake about it, dear friend, the thrice holy God of Scripture “requireth truth in the inward parts” (
C. The Word of God Exposes UsHebrews 4:13 NASB95 13 And there is no creature hidden from His sight, but all things are open and laid bare to the eyes of Him with whom we have to do.Open — laid bare to the eyes. Used of a dagger tied to the neck of someone accused of a crime. The point was position right below his chin so that he could not bow his head to look away from the court and his accusers but had to look at them face to face.—PinkHebrews: The MacArthur New Testament Commentary The Urgency of RestThe word translated open had two distinct uses in ancient times. It was used of a wrestler taking his opponent by the throat. In this position the two men were unavoidably face to face. The other use was in regard to a criminal trial. A sharp dagger would be bound to the neck of the accused, with the point just below his chin, so that he could not bow his head, but had to face the court. Both uses had to do with grave face-to-face situations.
II. Confidence in Our High PriestVerses 11-13 are negative reasons for trusting in Jesus but now we see the positive reasons to trust in Jesus.A. He Performed A Perfect WorkHebrews 4:14 NASB95 14 Therefore, since we have a great high priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession. When the temple was in effect, The high priest would pass from the altar through the outer court and then into the holy place through the veil and into the holy of holies. But…—Homer KentThe Epistle to the Hebrews: A Commentary 4. Christians Should Therefore Make Use of Christ, Their Superior Mediator 4:14–16No priest in the Old Testament was ever called a “great high priest.” Furthermore, the Christian’s high priest has passed through the heavens.
Passed Through the Heavens — Jesus went directly into the permanent presence of His Father in heaven itself. All other priests offered in the visiting glory of the Father in the tabernacle here on earth on Yom Kippur, once a year.It is still celebrated by Jews today even though they do not have a temple. It was October 1st this year.Jesus did not have to leave, He is seated at the right hand of His Father, but the earthly priests could only stay until the sacrifice was offered and then leave until the next year. There is no more special priesthood in Christianity. Any church who elevates special people as “priests” to mediate between God and man is in rebellion against Jesus Christ who completed that role once and for all.—PinkAn Exposition of Hebrews Chapter 18: Christ Superior to Joshua (Heb. 4:11–16)And having such a High Priest in heaven, can we lose courage? Can we draw back in cowardice, impatience, and faintheartedness? Can we give up our profession, our allegiance, our obedience to Christ? Or shall we not be like Joshua and Caleb, who followed the Lord fully? Let us hold fast our profession; let us persevere and fight the good fight of faith. Our great High Priest in the highest glory is our righteousness and strength. He loves, He watches, He prays, He holds us fast, and we shall never perish.
Instead, take hold or seize (that is the Greek word here “hold fast.”) There was a danger that they wouldn’t seize it, but would drift away.B. He Can Identify With UsHebrews 4:15 NASB95 15 For we do not have a high priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but One who has been tempted in all things as we are, yet without sin.Jesus wept at the death of His friend Lazarus, He was hungry like you, He was tired like you, He was tempted with sin like you and beyond you, He grieved over His coming death with drops of sweat like blood, like you grieve. His divine nature made all the human weaknesses you experience amplified and so much more difficult to endure.Hebrews: The MacArthur New Testament Commentary Jesus’ HumanityJesus not only had all the feelings of love, concern, disappointment, grief, and frustration that we have, but He had much greater love, infinitely more sensitive concerns, infinitely higher standards of righteousness, and perfect awareness of the evil and dangers of sin. Contrary, therefore, to what we are inclined to think, His divinity made His temptations and trials immeasurably harder for Him to endure than ours are for us.
He knows how you feel. He experienced human weakness (not sinful weakness) so He could sympathize with you.Hebrews: The MacArthur New Testament Commentary Jesus’ HumanityDr. John Wilson often told the following story. Booth Tucker was conducting evangelistic meetings in the great Salvation Army Citadel in Chicago. One night, after he had preached on the sympathy of Jesus, a man came forward and asked Mr. Tucker how he could talk about a loving, understanding, sympathetic God. “If your wife had just died, like mine has,” the man said, “and your babies were crying for their mother who would never come back, you wouldn’t be saying what you’re saying.”
A few days later Mr. Tucker’s wife was killed in a train wreck. Her body was brought to Chicago and carried to the Citadel for the funeral. After the service the bereaved preacher looked down into the silent face of his wife and then turned to those who were attending. “The other day when I was here,” he said, “a man told me that, if my wife had just died and my children were crying for their mother, I would not be able to say that Christ was understanding and sympathetic, or that He was sufficient for every need. If that man is here, I want to tell him that Christ is sufficient. My heart is broken, it is crushed, but it has a song, and Christ put it there. I want to tell that man that Jesus Christ speaks comfort to me today.” The man was there, and he came and knelt beside the casket while Booth Tucker introduced him to Jesus Christ.
We have a sympathetic High Priest, whose priesthood is perfect and whose Person is perfect.
C. He Draws Us Near in GraceHebrews 4:16 NASB95 16 Therefore let us draw near with confidence to the throne of grace, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.God’s throne is a throne of righteousness and majesty but because of Jesus, to us it is a throne of grace.—PinkAn Exposition of Hebrews Chapter 18: Christ Superior to Joshua (Heb. 4:11–16)In Jesus we draw near to the Father. The throne of majesty and righteousness is unto us a throne of grace
Boldly/with confidence— lit. “saying all.” Our confidence means we can come to God in honesty and full openness. We can share our deepest feelings, confess our deepest sin, share our fears, and ask anything that we may need. We can even tell him how our thoughts distracted and He listens to us with affection and concern. For unbelievers God’s throne is place where every mouth is shut, but because Jesus is our great High Priest, it is a place where our mouths are open and free. It doesn’t mean that we don’t need to be reverent and even penitent, but it does mean that we are free, welcomed, and loved. Our High Priest washes our feet, heals us from our backsliding, and give us back the joy of salvation when we stray not just once, but every time. Our confidence is not in ourselves, but in the finished work of Jesus.—PinkAn Exposition of Hebrews Chapter 18: Christ Superior to Joshua (Heb. 4:11–16)Boldly is not contrasted with reverently and tremblingly. It means literally ‘saying all,’ with that confidence which begets thorough honesty, frankness, full and open speech. ‘Pour out your heart before Him.’ Come as you are, say what you feel, ask what you need. Confess your sins, your fears, your wandering thoughts and affections.
—PinkAn Exposition of Hebrews Chapter 18: Christ Superior to Joshua (Heb. 4:11–16)We need only understand that we are sinners, and that He is High Priest. The law was given that every mouth may be shut, for we are guilty. The High Priest is given that every mouth may be opened … We come in faith as sinners. Then shall we obtain mercy; and we always need mercy, to wash our feet: to restore to us the joy of salvation, to heal our backslidings, and bind up our wounds. We shall obtain help in every time of need.
When it says “draw near” the original indicates that is something that we might do because we are able, but it does not guarantee that we will. That is left to us. We may choose to draw near or we may choose draw away. when we do, we will find God’s mercy not His judgement. We will find help from Him in our most desperate hour, not cold indifference. Why would anyone not take advantage of drawing near to throne of grace? Some reasons are:We think that we are too dirty, our sins are too grievous for God to forgive. — That diminishes the value of Christ’s office as our great High Priest who can sympathies with our weakness. We may think that we have failed to many times — That diminishes the value Christ’s work on the cross to open up the throne of grace fully to us.The story of John NewtonLet me tell you about a man whose life is a testimony to the saving grace of God—a man you’ve probably heard of, even if you didn’t know his full story. His name was John Newton.Today, we know him as the author of the hymn Amazing Grace, one of the most beloved and widely sung songs in the world. But his journey to writing that hymn is nothing short of miraculous.John Newton didn’t grow up in Sunday school. He was raised in a seafaring home in 18th-century England and eventually became the captain of a slave ship—yes, you heard that right. He made his living trafficking human lives across the ocean. He was vulgar, violent, and by his own admission, utterly lost.He later wrote that he lived with “a disregard for all that is holy.” At one point, he was so out of control that even hardened sailors considered him profane. But God didn’t give up on John Newton.During a brutal storm at sea in 1748, Newton feared for his life. He cried out to God, more out of desperation than faith. Yet something changed in him that night. The storm didn’t just beat against the ship; it broke through his heart! That moment started a journey. It wasn’t instant. But slowly, steadily, John Newton came to faith in Christ. And the grace of God not only saved his soul—it changed his direction. He eventually left the slave trade and became a passionate preacher of the gospel and an outspoken voice against slavery.Years later, when he sat down to write the words of a hymn, this is what flowed from his pen:Amazing grace! how sweet the sound,That saved a wretch like me!I once was lost, but now am found,Was blind, but now I see.”Church—if grace can save a man like that and give him access to throne of God, If Jesus can be his great High Priest, there’s hope for every single one of us. No one is too far gone. No sin too dark. No past too stained for Jesus to have sympathy.Let us be diligent to enter His rest, seize the good confession of Jesus, and draw near to the throne of grace with confidence in your Great High Priest.—PinkAn Exposition of Hebrews Chapter 18: Christ Superior to Joshua (Heb. 4:11–16)The verb in
