- Scripture Reading: Genesis 22:1-19Kid’s Message:The author uses Abraham as an example of someone who through faith and patience inherited the promises. It is Abraham’s faith and patience that we are called to imitate.I. The Promise to AbrahamA. The Quality of His Promise to Abraham
Hebrews 6:13 NASB95 13 For when God made the promise to Abraham, since He could swear by no one greater, He swore by Himself,“I, _________, do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; that I take this obligation freely, without any mental reservation or purpose of evasion; and that I will well and faithfully discharge the duties of the office on which I am about to enter. So help me God.”Because there is no one greater than God, when swears and oath, God says, “So help Me, Me.”B. The Content of His Promise to Abraham1. BlessingHebrews 6:14 NASB95 14 saying, “I will surely bless you and I will surely multiply you.”They were given the Word of God.Through them the Messiah would come. They were objects of the grace of God.They were blessed with the land of Israel.2. MultiplicationC. The Fulfillment of His Promise to AbrahamHebrews 6:15 NASB95 15 And so, having patiently waited, he obtained the promise.Waited — patience despite difficulties, but what difficulties? He had no land, no homeDifficulties with Lot (having to split company, having to rescue him)No heir for many, many years. slowness of God to act.Sacrifice of IsaacHe obtained the promise — Did He? He got Isaac. He probably met Jacob and Esau (they were approximately 15 when Abraham died). Abraham saw the blessings of God, but not the multiplication. In 2025 there are over 15 million descendants in the world. It is safe to say, that Abraham has received the promise! What difficulties are you facing? Family conflict, financial, health issues, safety concerns, disappointment. Be patient. This life is not your best life. In Christ we have obtained the promiseD. The Application of His Promise to AbrahamHebrews 6:16 NASB95 16 For men swear by one greater than themselves, and with them an oath given as confirmation is an end of every dispute. An oath supposedly gives a solemnness to a promise. It shows that a person is serious about keeping their word and should settle the matter.Jesus said,Matthew 5:34–37 NASB95 34 “But I say to you, make no oath at all, either by heaven, for it is the throne of God, 35 or by the earth, for it is the footstool of His feet, or by Jerusalem, for it is the city of the great King. 36 “Nor shall you make an oath by your head, for you cannot make one hair white or black. 37 “But let your statement be, ‘Yes, yes’ or ‘No, no’; anything beyond these is of evil. The Promise to UsA. The Quality of His Promise to UsHebrews 6:17 NASB95 17 In the same way God, desiring even more to show to the heirs of the promise the unchangeableness of His purpose, interposed with an oath,Hebrews 6:18 NASB95 18 so that by two unchangeable things in which it is impossible for God to lie…Two unchangeable things:His PurposeHis OathB. The Strength of His Promise to UsHebrews 6:18 NASB95 18 …we who have taken refuge would have strong encouragement to take hold of the hope set before us.Jesus is our refuge. When the storms of life pelt us, when the weight of our sin tries to defeat us, we don’t run entertainment to please us, we don’t run to food, or lust, drugs to numb us, though they should be a huge help, we don’t even run to our family primarily. Our refuge is in our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. We run to Him above all. He holds the hope we need in His nail scared hands! He has overcome, so we will overcome in Him.He has beaten sin, so we will defeat sin in Him.He has conquered death, so we will rise again in Him.C. The Security of His Promise to UsHebrews 6:19 NASB95 19 This hope we have as an anchor of the soul, a hope both sure and steadfast…The anchor was one of the most popular early christian symbols. Our anchor does not ground us to this earth, but anchors us upward to heaven.D. The Position of His Promise to UsHebrews 6:19 NASB95 19 …and one which enters within the veil,Hebrews 6:20 NASB95 20 where Jesus has entered as a forerunner for us, having become a high priest forever according to the order of Melchizedek. The presence of God dwelt within the veil of tabernacle/temple. Our hope is in His presence. The death of Christ tore the veil in 2 from top to bottom. The precious Son of God and Son Man entered the holy of holies and made it possible for us to enter into the presence of God almighty because we are positionally in the Son Almighty through faith. The jewish king couldn’t do it, the Aaronic priest couldn’t accomplish this. Only a kingly priest like Melchizedek could make this possible. Hebrews 6:13NASB95
