  • Scripture Reading: Leviticus 9:1-10
Kids Time: Pennies vs. quarters. Show the kids 12 pennies and one dollar bill and ask which one they would rather have, the pennies or the dollar. Jesus is like the dollar and the other priests are like the pennies. Jesus is worth all of them put together.
Why did God plan on changing the priesthood from the Levites to Jesus? Because we needed a better priest. In this passage, the author of Hebrews gives 3 proofs that Jesus is the Supreme High Priest. As Supreme Hight Priest, we can be assured of salvation in Jesus.

    I. God Certified Him (20-22)

    Hebrews 7:20 NASB95
20 And inasmuch as it was not without an oath
    Hebrews 7:21 NASB95
    21 (for they indeed became priests without an oath, but He with an oath through the One who said to Him, “The Lord has sworn And will not change His mind, ‘You are a priest forever’ ”);
    Hebrews 7:22 NASB95
22 so much the more also Jesus has become the guarantee of a better covenant.

II. He Is an Eternal Priest (23-25)

    Hebrews 7:23 NASB95
23 The former priests, on the one hand, existed in greater numbers because they were prevented by death from continuing,
Each priest in Israel’s history had one thing that disqualified them and keep them from ministering, DEATH!
Aaron died and did not enter the promised land. His priestly robes were handed to his sons.
Moses, the lawgiver, also died and did not enter the promised land. Neither the priestly office nor the law could get you into the promised land.
Both Aaron and Moses will enter the promised land one day, but only through the resurrection power of Jesus Christ!
    Hebrews 7:24 NASB95
24 but Jesus, on the other hand, because He continues forever, holds His priesthood permanently.
    permanent —
Greek-English Lexicon of the New Testament based on Semantic Domains 13.61 ἀπαράβατος, ον; ἀμετάθετος, ον

does not change from one state to another—‘not changing, unchanging, never to change

    Hebrews 7:25 NASB95
25 Therefore He is able also to save forever those who draw near to God through Him, since He always lives to make intercession for them.
    Because Jesus is eternal:

    He Is Able to Save

This is why Jesus said, “No one comes to the Father except through me.” No one else is able to what Jesus did!

    He Saves Forever

other versions say save to the uttermost. Completely, fully. He doesn’t save us half way and we have to do the rest. He doesn’t just start saving us and we have to keep ourselves saved. No, we have full salvation that is secure forever because when Jesus saves, He saves to the uttermost!

He Brings Us Near to God

How does He do this? It is through Jesus. By His grace through faith in Him.

    He Keeps Us Saved

He always lives to make intercession for us. He is the only one qualified for this job.
    Jude 24 NASB95
24 Now to Him who is able to keep you from stumbling, and to make you stand in the presence of His glory blameless with great joy,
    1 John 2:1–2 NASB95
1 My little children, I am writing these things to you so that you may not sin. And if anyone sins, we have an Advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous; 2 and He Himself is the propitiation for our sins; and not for ours only, but also for those of the whole world.
    1 John 1:9 NASB95
9 If we confess our sins, He is faithful and righteous to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
No saint, no angel, nor the mother of Jesus is declared able to perform this task.

    III. He Is Perfect (26-28)

The author has makes an argument from history as well as doctrine in 7:11-25. Now he makes a practical argument.
    Hebrews 7:26 NASB95
    26 For it was fitting for us to have such a high priest, holy, innocent, undefiled, separated from sinners and exalted above the heavens;
innocent — blameless — He never did anyone harm. People injure each other everyday, but Jesus did not cause injury but instead, He healed men of their injuries.
undefiled — unstained (“contact without contamination”, Wiersbe) spiritually and morally speaking, only Jesus could walk through a 33 mile sewer pipe wearing a white jumpsuit and come out as clean as when He entered.
Separated — Not separated physically, so in what way was He separate? He had a different nature that put Him into an entirely different class. He was separate morally as well.
Exalted — For all the reasons above.
    Hebrews 4:14 NASB95
14 Therefore, since we have a great high priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession.
    Hebrews 7:27 NASB95
27 who does not need daily, like those high priests, to offer up sacrifices, first for His own sins and then for the sins of the people, because this He did once for all when He offered up Himself.
There is only one Savior and one acceptable sacrifice
    Hebrews 7:28 NASB95
28 For the Law appoints men as high priests who are weak, but the word of the oath, which came after the Law, appoints a Son, made perfect forever.
This oath came after the law because the law was ineffective and we needed something else.
Jesus is our Certified, Eternal, and the Perfect High Priest. With a priest like this, you are secure in your salvation forever.
