    Kid’s Time:
Proposition: The sacrifice of the life Jesus Christ symbolized by His blood was necessary for salvation.
Interrogative Question: Why was it necessary for Christ’s blood to be shed.
    His Sacrifice Was Necessary..

    I. To Save OT Believers

    Hebrews 9:15 NASB95
15 For this reason He is the mediator of a new covenant, so that, since a death has taken place for the redemption of the transgressions that were committed under the first covenant, those who have been called may receive the promise of the eternal inheritance.
    Ezekiel 18:4 NASB95
4 “Behold, all souls are Mine; the soul of the father as well as the soul of the son is Mine. The soul who sins will die.
OT Sacrifice taught that one death (that of an animal) can take the place of person’s death temporarily. It also taught that the blood of animals could never take sin away finally and completely.
How is an OT saint saved? Through the blood of Jesus Christ. Credit paid in full at the cross.
Not all OT Jews were saved with the blood of Christ, only those who were called in the OT just as it is today.
    From S. Lewis Johnson:
Called — John McNeil, who was a Presbyterian Evangelist who was questioned about election a lot, used to like to say tongue in cheek, about election, “Preach the gospel to all sinners and if you get somebody to heaven that God didn’t elect, he’ll forgive you, for he loves sinners.”
How do you know if you are one of the called of God? If you repent of your sins and believe gospel of Jesus Christ, then you are called.

II. To Complete the Covenant (16-17)

    Hebrews 9:16 NASB95
16 For where a covenant is, there must of necessity be the death of the one who made it.
    Hebrews 9:17 NASB95
17 For a covenant is valid only when men are dead, for it is never in force while the one who made it lives.
covenant = last will and testament
    The Wealthy Man’s Final Request
A very wealthy man, who was a lifelong miser, was on his deathbed. He called for his three closest friends: his Doctor, his Pastor, and his Lawyer.
He told them, "I know people say you can't take it with you, but I’m going to try. I’m giving each of you an envelope containing $1 million in cash. When they lower my casket, I want each of you to throw your envelope in so I can have it in the next life."
At the funeral, all three men were seen dropping their envelopes into the grave. Afterward, as they walked away, the Doctor began to sob. "I have to confess," he cried. "I only put $800,000 in. I kept $200,000 to buy a new X-ray machine for the clinic."
The Pastor sighed and said, "I feel terrible too. The church roof was leaking and our mission fund was empty, so I only put $500,000 in the envelope."
The Lawyer stopped and looked at them both with pure disgust. "I am ashamed of you both!" he shouted. "He was our friend and those were his final wishes! I want you to know that I threw in a personal check for the full $1 million!"
While they are still living, a last will can be changed (though God never would). Since Jesus has died, the covenant is completed. God wrote out the covenant. Jesus as God and man dies to put the covenant in effect and receives the inheritance that the covenant promised. He is both parties of the will. If He would have stayed dead, He could not have enjoyed the inheritance. Because we are in Jesus through faith, we fully share in the inheritance.

    III. To Forgive Sin (18-22)

    Hebrews 9:18 NASB95
18 Therefore even the first covenant was not inaugurated without blood.
    Hebrews 9:19 NASB95
19 For when every commandment had been spoken by Moses to all the people according to the Law, he took the blood of the calves and the goats, with water and scarlet wool and hyssop, and sprinkled both the book itself and all the people,
Referring to the cleansing of an unclean house with water, scarlet wool and hyssop:
    Leviticus 14:52–53 NASB95
52 “He shall thus cleanse the house with the blood of the bird and with the running water, along with the live bird and with the cedar wood and with the hyssop and with the scarlet string. 53 “However, he shall let the live bird go free outside the city into the open field. So he shall make atonement for the house, and it will be clean.”
Hyssop is from the mint family and is used as an antiseptic. In the OT is bound together (with red wool?) and used to apply the blood of a sacrifice. Symbol of God’s grace and/or the Word of God?
    Hebrews 9:20 NASB95
20 saying, “This is the blood of the covenant which God commanded you.”
Jesus said during the last supper:
    Matthew 26:28 NASB95
28 for this is My blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for forgiveness of sins.
    Hebrews 9:21 NASB95
21 And in the same way he sprinkled both the tabernacle and all the vessels of the ministry with the blood.
    Hebrews 9:22 NASB95
22 And according to the Law, one may almost say, all things are cleansed with blood, and without shedding of blood there is no forgiveness.
    forgiveness -
Greek-English Lexicon of the New Testament based on Semantic Domains 40.8 ἀφίημι; ἄφεσις, εως; ἀπολύω

ἀφίημιf; ἄφεσιςa, εως f; ἀπολύωe: to remove the guilt resulting from wrongdoing—‘to pardon, to forgive, forgiveness. To send away or remove the guilt of an offense.

You can’t undo an act of sin but you can remove the guilt.
animal sacrifice was temporary and retroactive (Day of Atonement covered the sins of the past year).
The sacrifice of Jesus eternal, and comprehensive. His death brings forgiveness of all sin for all time. Past, present, future for all who are called.
    Jesus had to die.
    Matthew 16:21 NASB95
21 From that time Jesus began to show His disciples that He must go to Jerusalem, and suffer many things from the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and be raised up on the third day.
    John 3:14 NASB95
    14 “As Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of Man be lifted up;
    John 3:15 NASB95
