- Scripture Reading: 1 Peter 2:1-10Kid’s Time: Pouring water into a series of cups. As one fills, it begins to fill the next and so on.2 Peter and Jude: The MacArthur New Testament Commentary Chapter 2: The Believer’s Precious Faith—Part 2: Its Certainty (2 Peter 1:5–11)
First, some lack assurance because they sit under demanding, confrontive, convicting preaching of the law that upholds a high standard of righteousness, forces people to acknowledge their sinfulness, and causes them to feel the weight of sin and God’s displeasure. Such preaching may greatly disturb some listeners and cause them to waver concerning their spiritual condition. The pulpit that features strong confrontation does not always balance that with preaching that conveys strong comfort to those under grace, which produces genuine assurance.
Second, some people feel they are too sinful to be saved, and thus they have difficulty accepting forgiveness. There may be two basic causes for this. First, the human conscience can be relentless in some sensitive souls, and it naturally offers little forgiveness, grace, and mercy to relieve conviction and guilt (cf.
It is this assurance of our salvation that will guard us against Satan’s attacks. Assurance is the Helmet of salvation or hope of salvation that we must put on to live victoriously.Proposition:Transitional Statement:1. Our Faith2. Our God3. Our Peace4. A Shared LifeI. What We Are Given (4)A. Shared Promises2 Peter 1:4 LSB 4 For by these He has granted to us His precious and magnificent promises,The qualities of glory and excellence found in Jesus are the very attributes of God that granted the promises of salvation, forgiveness, sonship, peace with God, strength, joy, resurrection, and eternal bliss with Him. These promises are described as precious and magnificent.Precious means valuable. How valuable is forgiveness to you? How valuable is joy? Mankind will spend all the money they have to find joy in this life.Magnificent means the greatest. It is superlative. Nothing is greater. What can be greater than peace with the God who created you? What can be greater than to be honored as a son of the King of Kings and Lord of Lords.B. A Shared Nature2 Peter 1:4 LSB 4 For by these He has granted to us His precious and magnificent promises, so that by them you may become partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world by lust. These promises transform us to share in the very nature of God. We, of course, will never become God. That is not what this means. What it does mean is that we are conformed to the image of Christ both positionally in the eyes of God and practically as He molds us into who He wants us to be.Alongside this sharing in the divine nature, we are assured that we are safe from the danger of the corruption of this world. We are not in the world but not of this world and so we will not be condemned along with this world. Think of what you were before you came to Christ, the moral deficit that you had as you lived your life for your fleshly desires. Lusts of the flesh, lusts of the eyes, and the boastful pride of life dominated you. But you were freed! You escaped and have become a new creature in Christ2 Corinthians 5:17 LSB 17 Therefore if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old things passed away; behold, new things have come.It is a precious faith. It is a faith that we share with all the redeemed. It is just like their faith. You are not an outlier. You are not different from the saints of old. You have the same salvation that the apostles and the early church had. You are not defective or lacking anything in your salvation because the same Jesus who called Peter and Matthew, and John, and Paul has called you too. And by His glory and excellence you were saved not by your own glory or excellence. In christ you are fully and amply supplied to live a godly life for Jesus and His grace and peace just keep coming!II. What We Do With It (5-7)2 Peter 1:5 LSB 5 Now for this very reason also, applying all diligence, in your faith supply moral excellence, and in your moral excellence, knowledge,Apply all diligenceGreek-English Lexicon of the New Testament based on Semantic Domains 68.64 σπουδὴν πᾶσαν παρεισφέρωσπουδὴν πᾶσαν παρεισφέρω: (an idiom, literally ‘to bring every effort to’) to do one’s very best in attempting to do something
We are to give our maximum effort to this. Many things in this life take our effort to accomplish. Think of those things that you spend the most effort doing, job, sports, hobbies, pleasure, ease, sin. This is more important than those things and requires your maximum effort.2 Peter and Jude: The MacArthur New Testament Commentary The Effort Prescribedbelievers are compelled to call on all their regenerate faculties to live godly lives
Supply — from a term that meant “choirmaster.” In Greek culture, plays would be performed. There were the famous Greek tragedies, comedies, and dramatic choral hymns to their gods. A large choir was needed to accompany the plays and sing the hymns. Zealous citizens would volunteer at their own expense to put the choir together, train them, and lavishly give them everything they needed to make the performance the best. The choirmaster supplied the choir generously. We who have graciously received everything that we need for life and godliness from God, are given the responsibility to generously or lavishly supply the following virtues.FaithWe supply these moral virtues, but this work is done “in faith.” Faith is the first in this beautiful chain of virtues. They are the result of faith not in place of it. Without faith in Jesus, it would be impossible to diligently supply them.Moral ExcellenceIt is morally heroic deeds. It means to perform a task or duty in the most excellent way. When I was in school, I didn’t like to study very hard. I could easily coast in my school work, procrastinate before a test or project and still come out with a C or even a B. I could have been an A student, if I had applied myself. When the Lord called me into the ministry and I started seminary, things changed. I was interested in studying God’s Word, and so I applied myself. I completed my school tasks in the most excellent way that I could for the purest reasons. (Not perfectly of course). These tasks are done in the normal course of life for the benefit of all, not in a remote monastery for selfish piety.KnowledgeTruth understood with spiritual discernment. We are to have our minds filled with and enlightened with the Word of God. How do we supply this knowledge. Easy, we give every effort to study God’s Word, meditate on God’s Word so that we will have the the mind of Christ imprinted onto our minds.Self Control2 Peter 1:6 LSB 6 and in your knowledge, self-control, and in your self-control, perseverance, and in your perseverance, godliness,Greek-English Lexicon of the New Testament based on Semantic Domains 88.83 ἐγκρατεύομαι; ἐγκράτεια, αςἐγκρατεύομαι; ἐγκράτεια, ας f: to exercise complete control over one’s desires and actions—‘to control oneself, to exercise self- control, self-control.’
1 Corinthians 9:25 LSB 25 Now everyone who competes in the games exercises self-control in all things. They then do it to receive a corruptible crown, but we an incorruptible.PerseveranceGreek-English Lexicon of the New Testament based on Semantic Domains 25.174 ὑπομονή, ῆςὑπομονή, ῆς f: capacity to continue to bear up under difficult circumstances—‘endurance, being able to endure.
Not just a “grin and bear it” mindset, but a forward looking hope when we are going through the worst that life can throw at us.GodlinessFor many people, trials lead to doubt and questioning God. “Why is God allowing this to happen to me?” True perseverance will lead to the next virtue, which is godliness.Greek-English Lexicon of the New Testament based on Semantic Domains 53.1 θρησκεία, ας; εὐσέβεια, ας; θεοσέβεια, αςθρησκεία, ας f; εὐσέβειαa, ας f; θεοσέβεια, ας f: appropriate beliefs and devout practice of obligations relating to supernatural persons and powers—‘religion, piety.’
Once we have persevered, we see the faithfulness of God and so we properly believe in God and devote ourselves in reverence to Him.Brotherly Kindness2 Peter 1:7 LSB 7 and in your godliness, brotherly kindness, and in your brotherly kindness, love. When our devotion to God is prioritized and we give Him the worship that He deserves, then kindness toward fellow brothers and sister in Christ must then be supplied. Notice the order. Godliness first and then brotherly kindness. To get them backwards leads to the worship of man through soft sentimentalism and misdirected acceptance of the sin in people. A true friend is kind enough to encourage you when you are down and gently confront you when you are wrong.LoveGreek-English Lexicon of the New Testament based on Semantic Domains 25.43 ἀγαπάω; ἀγάπη, ηςἀγαπάωa; ἀγάπηa, ης f: to have love for someone or something, based on sincere appreciation and high regard—‘to love, to regard with affection, loving concern, love
This is a selfless, sacrificial, choice to seek the best for another person. The world’s chain of virtues:Applying all doubts supply moral corruption, in moral corruption supply deception, in deception supply addiction, in your addiction supply impatience, in your impatience supply worldliness, in your worldliness supply discord, and in your discord supply selfishness.Opposite of Faith ➔ Unbelief / Doubt / ApostasySatanic parallel: Casting doubt on God’s word and character (as seen in Genesis 3:4: "You will not surely die") and blinding the minds of unbelievers (2 Corinthians 4:4). [1, 2]Opposite of Virtue (Moral Excellence) ➔ Moral Corruption / Vice / WickednessSatanic parallel: Promoting lawlessness, indulgence in corrupt desires, and celebrating what is base or destructive (2 Peter 1:4). [1]Opposite of Knowledge ➔ Ignorance / Deception / DelusionSatanic parallel: Masquerading as an angel of light (2 Corinthians 11:14) and spreading falsehoods, lies, and spiritual blindness (John 8:44). [1]Opposite of Self-Control ➔ Indulgence / Excess / Impulsiveness / AddictionSatanic parallel: Exploiting human weaknesses and inciting uncontrolled fleshly passions and loss of restraint (1 Corinthians 7:5; Ephesians 4:26-27). [1]Opposite of Perseverance ➔ Cowardice / Impatience / Giving Up / DefeatismSatanic parallel: Choking out faith through pressure, persecution, or trials (Mark 4:15) and driving people to abandon hope in God. [1]Opposite of Godliness ➔ Worldliness / Irreverence / Pride / RebellionSatanic parallel: The root of Satan's own fall—exalting the self above God ("I will make myself like the Most High"—Isaiah 14:13-14) and leading humans to act as their own gods (Genesis 3:5). [1, 2]Opposite of Brotherly Kindness ➔ Discord / Division / Envy / FactionalismSatanic parallel: Causing strife, gossiping, biting and devouring one another within the community, and turning believers against each other (James 3:14-16). [1]Opposite of Love (Agape) ➔ Hatred / Malice / Cruelty / SelfishnessSatanic parallel: Acting as a "murderer from the beginning" (John 8:44), accusing others (Revelation 12:10), and operating entirely out of self-seeking destruction rather than sacrificial good.III. How It Helps Us (8-11)A. You Wont’ Be Lazy2 Peter 1:8 LSB 8 For if these things are yours and are increasing, they render you neither useless…Lazy, inactive faith.B. You Won’t Be Unproductive2 Peter 1:8 LSB 8 For if these things are yours and are increasing, they render you neither useless nor unfruitful in the full knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.Ephesians 5:11 LSB 11 And do not participate in the unfruitful works of darkness, but instead even expose them.in full knowledge of our Lord Jesus — makes it clear Peter is talking to believers. Only true believers can produce spiritual fruit.C. You Will Be Confident2 Peter 1:9 LSB 9 For in whom these things are not present, that one is blind, being nearsighted, having forgotten the purification from his former sins.If these virtues are not present, the believer loses assurance. All believers have eternal security, but not all believers have assurance of their salvation.2 Peter 1:10 LSB 10 Therefore, brothers, be all the more diligent to make your calling and choosing sure; for in doing these things, you will never stumble;2 Peter 1:11 LSB 11 for in this way the entrance into the eternal kingdom of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ will be abundantly supplied to you. 2 Peter 1:4LGCYSTNDRDBBLSB
