Luke 19:1–10 NKJV 1 Then Jesus entered and passed through Jericho. 2 Now behold, there was a man named Zacchaeus who was a chief tax collector, and he was rich. 3 And he sought to see who Jesus was, but could not because of the crowd, for he was of short stature. 4 So he ran ahead and climbed up into a sycamore tree to see Him, for He was going to pass that way. 5 And when Jesus came to the place, He looked up and saw him, and said to him, “Zacchaeus, make haste and come down, for today I must stay at your house.” 6 So he made haste and came down, and received Him joyfully. 7 But when they saw it, they all complained, saying, “He has gone to be a guest with a man who is a sinner.” 8 Then Zacchaeus stood and said to the Lord, “Look, Lord, I give half of my goods to the poor; and if I have taken anything from anyone by false accusation, I restore fourfold.” 9 And Jesus said to him, “Today salvation has come to this house, because he also is a son of Abraham; 10 for the Son of Man has come to seek and to save that which was lost.”Zacchaeus LookedWe need to talk about who Zacchaeus was.He was a tax collector. In those days, tax collectors were often corrupt and were thought of as being traitors. He wasn’t liked by the people.Kind of like police officers are today.Think about this for a minute. At some point, you were smaller so you should be able to imagine this.I don’t have to imagine. So what does Zacchaeus do? He climbs a tree. There’s something here that is commendable. It’s like the woman who wanted to touch the hem of Jesus’ clothing.Or like the people that took the roof apart to get their friend down to Jesus.Zacchaeus want’s to see Jesus. He was willing to do something that was beneath his station .How many adults do you see climbing a tree?It also shows a bit of humility. He was willing to come as a child to Jesus.Jesus LovedThink about this for a minute.Jesus is looking where he is going, people are crowding him in and he sees this man in a tree.He sees how the man is dressed.I’m sure Zacchaeus was dressed richly. It would have been a weird sight. But Jesus saw that he was LookingSo instead of leaving this man who was obviously rich, Jesus calls to him.So he calls Zacchaeus to him.Matthew 7:7 NKJV 7 “Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you.Jesus loves us.For God so loved the world.Look at Luke 19:5Luke 19:5 NKJV 5 And when Jesus came to the place, He looked up and saw him, and said to him, “Zacchaeus, make haste and come down, for today I must stay at your house.”Jesus takes a hit for this. The others say that he’s having dinner with a sinner. The truth is that there is nothing wrong with what he did.He went to Zacchaeus’ house to teach him.We know this because during dinner, Zacchaeus stands up and apologizes.Zacchaeus LamentedLook at Luke 19:8Luke 19:8 NKJV 8 Then Zacchaeus stood and said to the Lord, “Look, Lord, I give half of my goods to the poor; and if I have taken anything from anyone by false accusation, I restore fourfold.”This is true repentance.Whatever Jesus told Zacchaeus while having dinner is not recorded, but whatever it was, it tore Zacchaeus’ heart. He vows to giving have his money away and giving back to those he wronged 4x.That is not the words of a rich man.But it is the words of a true believer.A true believer will be Looking for the LordWhen we’ve done wrong, a true believer will be upset over the sin and will seek God for forgiveness.I’ve heard stories of people that were saved and then they will turn themselves over to the police for something they did years ago. Many people will be quick to point out someone else’s sins, but they ignore their own.Look what Jesus says:Luke 19:9–10 NKJV 9 And Jesus said to him, “Today salvation has come to this house, because he also is a son of Abraham; 10 for the Son of Man has come to seek and to save that which was lost.”Zacchaeus knew he had done wrong and he was ready to fix the problem. So here’s the question I want to leave with y’all:Are you Looking for the Lord? Are you willing to get up in that tree to look for Jesus?I would, but Cristy has told me “No more Trees”Are you seeking the Lord in prayer? Are you looking for his return? Are you longing for his return? We need himwe need his mercyWe need his help Luke 19:1–10KJV1900
