Welcome and Announcements

Opening Prayer & Gathering #391 Take My Life, vs. 1

Take my life, and let it be

Consecrated, Lord, to Thee.

Take my moments and my days;

Let them flow in ceaseless praise,

Let them flow in ceaseless praise.

Call to Worship (based on Psalm 42)

As a deer longs for flowing streams, our souls long for you, O God.

Our souls thirst for God, for the living God.

Why are you cast down, O my soul, and why are you disquieted within me?

Hope in God, for we shall again praise the Lord, our help and our God.

Opening Hymn #189 As Deer Long for the Streams

(Please remain standing through the Gloria Patri)

Call to Confession

In the prophet Isaiah, God declares a readiness to be sought out, even by those who did not ask, and a willingness to be found, even by those who do not seek. With confidence in God’s readiness to receive us however we are, let us boldly pray this prayer of confession.

Prayer of confession

God of gospel freedom, we find it difficult to imagine that we could indeed be your children through faith. We struggle to grasp that we could belong to Christ and be heirs of the promise made to Abraham and his offspring. Help our unbelief. Rekindle our imagination. Tame our rebellion. Restore our hearts and minds. And bring us back to you.

Assurance of pardon (from Galatians 3)

In Christ Jesus, we are all children of God through faith; we are no longer subject to a disciplinarian. We are heirs according to the promise and made free in Christ Jesus. Friends, believe the good news of the gospel. In Jesus Christ, we are forgiven.

In light of God’s gift of grace, please turn to your neighbor to extend the peace of Christ, saying, “May the Peace of Christ be with you,” and offer the traditional response:

“And also with you.”

Gloria Patri

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son,

and to the Holy Ghost;

As it was in the beginning, is now,

and ever shall be, world without end.

Sermon for Faith Builders Children are invited to go to Children’s Worship with our Children’s Worship Leader, Ms. Marisa. Children will return during the final hymn.

Hymn #403 What a Friend We Have in Jesus

Scripture Reading 1 Kings 19:1-16

Anthem Be Glad!           Gregg Sewell

Be glad, be glad, be glad, be glad in the Lord!

Be glad, be glad, be glad, be glad in the Lord!

O be ye glad! O be ye glad!

Be glad in the Lord, Let us rejoice in the Lord of love!

O, be glad in the Lord, O, be joyful, praise ye the Lord!

Our God is the God of joy who gives us a perfect peace.

Our God is a holy God; God of light, God of live and joy.

So, be glad, be glad, be glad, be glad in the Lord!

Be glad, be glad, be glad, be glad in the Lord!

O be ye glad! O be ye glad! Be glad in the Lord!

Sermon   The Power of Passion  Luke 8:26-39

Affirmation of Faith - (from The Book of Order, F-1.0301)

The Church is the body of Christ. Christ gives to the Church all the gifts necessary to be his body. The Church strives to demonstrate these gifts in its life as a community in the world:

The Church is to be a community of faith, entrusting itself to God alone, even at the risk of losing its life.

The Church is to be a community of hope, rejoicing in the sure and certain knowledge that, in Christ, God is making a new creation. This new creation is a new beginning for human life and for all things. The Church lives in the present on the strength of that promised new creation.

The Church is to be a community of love, where sin is forgiven, reconciliation is accomplished, and the dividing walls of hostility are torn down.

The Church is to be a community of witness, pointing beyond itself through word and work to the good news of God’s transforming grace in Christ Jesus its Lord.
