Matthew recorded Jesus explaining to His disciples that the coming of the Son of Man was at a time that only God the Father knows so the must be vigilantly watchful.
Today, as Jesus’ disciples, we still don’t know when He will return so we must strive to be watchful for the Son of Man’s coming.
How can you be watchful for the coming of the Son of Man?
    Transition to Exposition 1 (36-42)

    I. You can be watchful for Jesus’ coming by accepting that you cannot know when it will happen but to be ready at all times (36-42)

    Matthew 24:36 ESV
“But concerning that day and hour no one knows, not even the angels of heaven, nor the Son, but the Father only.
    Matthew 24:37 ESV
For as were the days of Noah, so will be the coming of the Son of Man.
    Matthew 24:38 ESV
For as in those days before the flood they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day when Noah entered the ark,
    Matthew 24:39 ESV
and they were unaware until the flood came and swept them all away, so will be the coming of the Son of Man.
    Matthew 24:40 ESV
Then two men will be in the field; one will be taken and one left.
    Matthew 24:41 ESV
Two women will be grinding at the mill; one will be taken and one left.
    Matthew 24:42 ESV
Therefore, stay awake, for you do not know on what day your Lord is coming.

    I. You can be watchful for Jesus’ coming by accepting that you cannot know when it will happen but to be ready at all times (36-42)

    Military preparedness
    Argumentation
    Two parts:
    Accepting that you cannot know
    Being ready as a result
    Applications:
We can work to accept the imminence of Christ’s return by studying it and asking God to help us really believe it.
We can work to be ready preparing as if you know when.
    Transition to Exposition 2 (43-44)
In fact, Jesus makes that point in the next two verses.

II. You can be watchful for His coming by preparing as if you know the exact time (43-44)

    Matthew 24:43 ESV
But know this, that if the master of the house had known in what part of the night the thief was coming, he would have stayed awake and would not have let his house be broken into.
    Matthew 24:44 ESV
Therefore you also must be ready, for the Son of Man is coming at an hour you do not expect.
    Jesus provides the illustration here...
Think about how rediculous it would be to know the details of a robbery on your own property and for you to do nothing.
    Argumentation
Jesus is arguing that, if you are not preparing for His return, you don’t really believe that He can return at any time...
    Application
    So how can we prepare?
As we already said, we can learn and increase our knowledge
We can realize that putting things off as Christians, particularly eternal things, is not an option
    Don’t wait to prepare
Don’t wait to tell others the Good news
Don’t wait to put sin to death
    Don’t wait to believe
    Transition to Exposition 3 (45-51)

III. You can be watchful for His coming by being faithful with the tasks entrusted to you (45-51)

    Matthew 24:45 ESV
“Who then is the faithful and wise servant, whom his master has set over his household, to give them their food at the proper time?
    Matthew 24:46 ESV
Blessed is that servant whom his master will find so doing when he comes.
    Matthew 24:47 ESV
Truly, I say to you, he will set him over all his possessions.
    Matthew 24:48 ESV
But if that wicked servant says to himself, ‘My master is delayed,’
    Matthew 24:49 ESV
and begins to beat his fellow servants and eats and drinks with drunkards,
    Matthew 24:50 ESV
the master of that servant will come on a day when he does not expect him and at an hour he does not know
    Matthew 24:51 ESV
and will cut him in pieces and put him with the hypocrites. In that place there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.

    Argumentation
Jesus is clearly teaching His disciples that they will have duties as part of the kingdom. In the illustration, Jesus uses leadership duties but remember that is just an illustration.
Ultimately, the disciple who is true will be faithful with their tasks, whatever they may be
And the false disciple will be unfaithful and unwise.
    Application:
If you are a teacher in the kingdom, prepare well, work on your craft
If you are tasked with behind the scenes work, do it faithfully
If you don’t know your task, seek it
There are many tasks given to all kingdom citizens so learn them
ex. Worship, building up the body, working to expand the kingdom, prayer, etc.
Pray and ask God to reveal to you how you can be useful while you wait
    Ask your pastor
Look for needs and see if you might be able to meet the need or learn to.
If you are not a part of the kingdom, become a citizen
    Conclusion
Return to opening illustration about amazon prime and medical bills
Today, as Jesus’ disciples, we still don’t know when He will return so we must strive to be watchful for the Son of Man’s coming.
We saw that we can be watchful for the coming of the Son of Man in three ways...
You can be watchful for Jesus’ coming by accepting that you cannot know when it will happen but to be ready at all times (36-42)
You can be watchful for His coming by preparing as if you know the exact time (43-44)
You can be watchful for His coming by being faithful with the tasks entrusted to you (45-51)
Action: So live watchfully, be ready, prepare, because you don’t know when He will come.
Appeal: Don’t wait. Waiting is not a Christian option. It is also not an option for the unbeliever otherwise the consequences in verse 51 will become all to real.
