You can be watchful for Jesus’ coming by accepting that you cannot know when it will happen but to be ready at all times (36-42)
Matthew 24:36 ESV “But concerning that day and hour no one knows, not even the angels of heaven, nor the Son, but the Father only.Matthew 24:37 ESV For as were the days of Noah, so will be the coming of the Son of Man.Matthew 24:38 ESV For as in those days before the flood they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day when Noah entered the ark,Matthew 24:39 ESV and they were unaware until the flood came and swept them all away, so will be the coming of the Son of Man.Matthew 24:40 ESV Then two men will be in the field; one will be taken and one left.Matthew 24:41 ESV Two women will be grinding at the mill; one will be taken and one left.Matthew 24:42 ESV Therefore, stay awake, for you do not know on what day your Lord is coming.I. You can be watchful for His coming by preparing as if you know the exact time (43-44)Matthew 24:43 ESV But know this, that if the master of the house had known in what part of the night the thief was coming, he would have stayed awake and would not have let his house be broken into.Matthew 24:44 ESV Therefore you also must be ready, for the Son of Man is coming at an hour you do not expect.Jesus provides the illustration here...Think about how rediculous it would be to know the details of a robbery on your own property and for you to do nothing.ArgumentationJesus is arguing that, if you are not preparing for His return, you don’t really believe that He can return at any time...ApplicationSo how can we prepare? As we already said, we can learn and increase our knowledgeWe can realize that putting things off as Christians, particularly eternal things, is not an optionDon’t wait to prepareDon’t wait to tell others the Good newsDon’t wait to put sin to deathDon’t wait to believeTransition to Exposition 3 (45-51)III. You can be watchful for His coming by being faithful with the tasks entrusted to you (45-51)Matthew 24:45 ESV “Who then is the faithful and wise servant, whom his master has set over his household, to give them their food at the proper time?Matthew 24:46 ESV Blessed is that servant whom his master will find so doing when he comes.Matthew 24:47 ESV Truly, I say to you, he will set him over all his possessions.Matthew 24:48 ESV But if that wicked servant says to himself, ‘My master is delayed,’Matthew 24:49 ESV and begins to beat his fellow servants and eats and drinks with drunkards,Matthew 24:50 ESV the master of that servant will come on a day when he does not expect him and at an hour he does not knowMatthew 24:51 ESV and will cut him in pieces and put him with the hypocrites. In that place there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.IllustrationOwner vs Manager at a restaurantArgumentationJesus is clearly teaching His disciples that they will have duties as part of the kingdom. In the illustration, Jesus uses leadership duties but remember that is just an illustration.Ultimately, the disciple who is true will be faithful with their tasks, whatever they may beAnd the false disciple will be unfaithful and unwise.Application:If you are a teacher in the kingdom, prepare well, work on your craftIf you are tasked with behind the scenes work, do it faithfullyIf you don’t know your task, seek itThere are many tasks given to all kingdom citizens so learn themex.
