    Introduction
Sometimes we think that things come easy to people who are gifted in an area
    Gifted author...
    Two divisions
    Big Idea

Jesus’ Sacrifice was a True Sacrifice

    Interrogative
In what ways was Jesus’ Sacrifice true?
    Division One
The first way Jesus’ sacrifice was true is becuase

    I. All are guilty of the sin that nailed Christ to the cross (31-35)

    Explanation
    Matthew 26:31 ESV
31 Then Jesus said to them, “You will all fall away because of me this night. For it is written, ‘I will strike the shepherd, and the sheep of the flock will be scattered.’
    This night
    Quote from Zechariah 13:7
It is written- shows that even the scattering of the sheep is in God’s sovereign plan.
Context of Zechariah paints a picture of a false shepherd (Ch. 11) and a Shepherd who is close to Yahweh
The shepherd is stricken, all the sheep scatter, 1/3 of the sheep are refined and return to the Shepherd forming the true people of God
Strike the shepherd- Related to Jesus arrest and execution
    Matthew 26:32 ESV
32 But after I am raised up, I will go before you to Galilee.”
    Jesus predicts the ressurection
His disciples simply cannot comprehend what He is telling them.
    Matthew 26:33 ESV
33 Peter answered him, “Though they all fall away because of you, I will never fall away.”
    Peter shows his pride
be careful not to be too hard on Peter...
    Matthew 26:34 ESV
34 Jesus said to him, “Truly, I tell you, this very night, before the rooster crows, you will deny me three times.”
Sometimes we fall hardest when we think we can’t
    My bike crash
    Matthew 26:35 ESV
35 Peter said to him, “Even if I must die with you, I will not deny you!” And all the disciples said the same.
    Not just Peter
    Illustration
The truth is/ we all fall/have fallen, just like me going over the handle bars
    Argumentation
Realize that the disciples needed Jesus just as much as anyone else. They were guilty and so are you and so am I.
    Application
    Don’t be proud
Don’t believe the lie that people are beyond the reach of God’s grace
Good news: Many turn to Jesus
    Division Two

II. Jesus’ truly desired another way yet freely yielded to God’s will (36-46)

    Explanation
    Matthew 26:36 ESV
36 Then Jesus went with them to a place called Gethsemane, and he said to his disciples, “Sit here, while I go over there and pray.”
    Gethsemane- Oil press
Frequent place to visit for Jesus and His disciples.
    Matthew 26:37 ESV
37 And taking with him Peter and the two sons of Zebedee, he began to be sorrowful and troubled.
Inner circle; Peter, James, and John
    Matthew 26:38 ESV
38 Then he said to them, “My soul is very sorrowful, even to death; remain here, and watch with me.”
    Lit. “Overwhelmed with sorrow”
    even to death
    watch with me
    Matthew 26:39 ESV
39 And going a little farther he fell on his face and prayed, saying, “My Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me; nevertheless, not as I will, but as you will.”
    Matthew 26:40 ESV
40 And he came to the disciples and found them sleeping. And he said to Peter, “So, could you not watch with me one hour?
    Matthew 26:41 ESV
41 Watch and pray that you may not enter into temptation. The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.”
    Matthew 26:42 ESV
42 Again, for the second time, he went away and prayed, “My Father, if this cannot pass unless I drink it, your will be done.”
    Matthew 26:43 ESV
43 And again he came and found them sleeping, for their eyes were heavy.
    Matthew 26:44 ESV
44 So, leaving them again, he went away and prayed for the third time, saying the same words again.
    Matthew 26:45 ESV
45 Then he came to the disciples and said to them, “Sleep and take your rest later on. See, the hour is at hand, and the Son of Man is betrayed into the hands of sinners.
    Matthew 26:46 ESV
46 Rise, let us be going; see, my betrayer is at hand.”
