    I. Faith without Works

    Psalm 119:155 ESV
155 Salvation is far from the wicked, for they do not seek your statutes.
    Psalm 119:158 ESV
158 I look at the faithless with disgust, because they do not keep your commands.
    Luke 6:43–49 ESV
43 “For no good tree bears bad fruit, nor again does a bad tree bear good fruit, 44 for each tree is known by its own fruit. For figs are not gathered from thornbushes, nor are grapes picked from a bramble bush. 45 The good person out of the good treasure of his heart produces good, and the evil person out of his evil treasure produces evil, for out of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaks. 46 “Why do you call me ‘Lord, Lord,’ and not do what I tell you? 47 Everyone who comes to me and hears my words and does them, I will show you what he is like: 48 he is like a man building a house, who dug deep and laid the foundation on the rock. And when a flood arose, the stream broke against that house and could not shake it, because it had been well built. 49 But the one who hears and does not do them is like a man who built a house on the ground without a foundation. When the stream broke against it, immediately it fell, and the ruin of that house was great.”
    James 1:22–25 ESV
22 But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves. 23 For if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man who looks intently at his natural face in a mirror. 24 For he looks at himself and goes away and at once forgets what he was like. 25 But the one who looks into the perfect law, the law of liberty, and perseveres, being no hearer who forgets but a doer who acts, he will be blessed in his doing.
    James 2:14 ESV
14 What good is it, my brothers, if someone says he has faith but does not have works? Can that faith save him?
    James 2:26 ESV
26 For as the body apart from the spirit is dead, so also faith apart from works is dead.

    II. Faith with works

How do we think of works?
How did that Psalmist think of works?
    Joyous
    Source of knowldge
Let us look at few things the Psalmist learned from reading the Word...
    Psalm 119:156 ESV
156 Great is your mercy, O Lord; give me life according to your rules.

    God is Merciful

We often think of Gods rules as restrictive and obviously in some sense they are, however, in another, very real sense they are liberating
    Ex. OT dietary laws
Ex. NT Christians and the treatment of women and children
Yet the restriction in the Laws is a mercy
    Ex. Sexual laws
    Ex. Contententedness
    Psalm 119:160 ESV
160 The sum of your word is truth, and every one of your righteous rules endures forever.

    God’s Word is True

Christians are often accused of being anti-truth (science)
    explain
    Psalm 119:165 ESV
165 Great peace have those who love your law; nothing can make them stumble.

Peace and security are found in obedience

    Eternal Security?perseverance of the saints

    Obedience by faith

    Psalm 119:153 ESV
153 Look on my affliction and deliver me, for I do not forget your law.
    Psalm 119:154 ESV
154 Plead my cause and redeem me; give me life according to your promise!
    Psalm 119:155 ESV
155 Salvation is far from the wicked, for they do not seek your statutes.
    Psalm 119:156 ESV
156 Great is your mercy, O Lord; give me life according to your rules.
    Psalm 119:157 ESV
157 Many are my persecutors and my adversaries, but I do not swerve from your testimonies.
    Psalm 119:159 ESV
159 Consider how I love your precepts! Give me life according to your steadfast love.
