    Introduction
    This passage serves as a building up portion of the book...
    Our passage addresses Children, Fathers and young men. What do these represent?
    Children = all readers
    Fathers = ?
    Young Men = ?
    only males?
    Inclusive uses?
    Stage of life?
    Physical or spiritual?
    Grouping 1 (Children)
    12 I am writing to you, little children, because your sins are forgiven for his name’s sake. 13c I write to you, children, because you know the Father.
    Grouping 2 (Fathers)
    13a I am writing to you, fathers, because you know him who is from the beginning. 14a I am write to you, fathers, because you know him who is from the beginning.
    Grouping 3 (Young Men)
    13b I am writing to you, young men, because you have overcome the evil one. 14b I write you you, young men, because you are strong, and the word of God abides in you, and you have overcome the evil one.
    All this being said, this section ultimately serves as a summary of all that has been said so far as a celebration of what we have in Christ. Everything in this passage is applied to all believers and there is even overlap within the text. We are going to look at these ideas individually rather than by stated audience

    I. Believer’s sins are forgiven in Christ

    Introduce the atonement
    The individual aspect - Penal Substitutionary atonement
    explain...
    So, John is writing to them to assure them of their forgiveness of sin.
    1 John 5:13 ESV
    13 I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, that you may know that you have eternal life.
    So the question here is, “Do you have sins that need forgiveness?”
    Romans 3:23 ESV
    23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,
    Is the world broken
    Is it observable?
    What is the solution?

    II. Believers know the Father who has always been.

    This passage tells us that believers not only are reconciled to God but know Him
    We know him in two ways
    As the One who is from the beginning. (less personal- who He is)
    As the One who is now our Father. (more personal- how He is)

    III. Believers have overcome the evil one.

    Christus Victor

    IV. Believers are given the strength and knowledge for life

    14b I write you you, young men, because you are strong, and the word of God abides in you
