10 Then David blessed the Lord in the sight of all the assembly. David said, May you be blessed, Lord God of our father Israel, from eternity to eternity. 11 Yours, Lord, is the greatness and the power and the glory and the splendor and the majesty, for everything in the heavens and on earth belongs to you. Yours, Lord, is the kingdom, and you are exalted as head over all. 12 Riches and honor come from you, and you are the ruler of everything. Power and might are in your hand, and it is in your hand to make great and to give strength to all. 13 Now therefore, our God, we give you thanks and praise your glorious name. 14 But who am I, and who are my people, that we should be able to give as generously as this? For everything comes from you, and we have given you only what comes from your own hand. 15 For we are aliens and temporary residents in your presence as were all our ancestors. Our days on earth are like a shadow, without hope. 16 Lord our God, all this wealth that we’ve provided for building you a house for your holy name comes from your hand; everything belongs to you. 17 I know, my God, that you test the heart and that you are pleased with what is right. I have willingly given all these things with an upright heart, and now I have seen your people who are present here giving joyfully and willingly to you. 18 Lord God of Abraham, Isaac, and Israel, our ancestors, keep this desire forever in the thoughts of the hearts of your people, and confirm their hearts toward you. 19 Give my son Solomon an undivided heart to keep and to carry out all your commands, your decrees, and your statutes, and to build the building for which I have made provision.

    Intro:

    Daniel 4:28–33 CSB
28 All this happened to King Nebuchadnezzar. 29 At the end of twelve months, as he was walking on the roof of the royal palace in Babylon, 30 the king exclaimed, “Is this not Babylon the Great that I have built to be a royal residence by my vast power and for my majestic glory?” 31 While the words were still in the king’s mouth, a voice came from heaven: “King Nebuchadnezzar, to you it is declared that the kingdom has departed from you. 32 You will be driven away from people to live with the wild animals, and you will feed on grass like cattle for seven periods of time, until you acknowledge that the Most High is ruler over human kingdoms, and he gives them to anyone he wants.” 33 At that moment the message against Nebuchadnezzar was fulfilled. He was driven away from people. He ate grass like cattle, and his body was drenched with dew from the sky, until his hair grew like eagles’ feathers and his nails like birds’ claws.

    Then

David gives of his own wealth to facilitate the building of the Temple after his death.
David gave: 100 tons of gold, 250 tons of refined silver
The people then gave: 185 tons of gold, 10,000 gold coins, 375 tons of sliver, 675 tons of bronze, and 4,000 tons of iron.
    (9) “Then the people rejoiced because of their leaders willingness to give, for they had given to the Lord Whole heartedly”
Maturing in Christ leads to thanking God for who he is rather than what he gives!

    I. God Gives

    1 Chronicles 29:10–13 CSB
David at the end of his life thinking retroactively and reflecting on God came to certain conclusion after having had many diverse experiences with God has come to this conclusion about God!
(EXP)(11) “David said, May you be bless, Lord God of our father Israel from Eternity to Eternity”
Blessed means: To kneel down, to invoke, to praise or extol! In the NT book of 1 Peter 1:3-4
    1 Peter 1:3–4 CSB
3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. Because of his great mercy he has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead 4 and into an inheritance that is imperishable, undefiled, and unfading, kept in heaven for you.
In this book Peter says “blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ” he uses the word: Eulogetos where we get our word “Eulogy” from which means to speak well of. Let’s take a quick look at David throughout his life during some of the up and down moments.
    2 Samuel 6:8 CSB
8 David was angry because of the Lord’s outburst against Uzzah, so he named that place Outburst Against Uzzah, as it is today.
    Psalm 13:1–2 CSB
1 How long, Lord? Will you forget me forever? How long will you hide your face from me? 2 How long will I store up anxious concerns within me, agony in my mind every day? How long will my enemy dominate me?
I wanted you to see that in the life of a very mature believer there are times of anger, fear, abandonment, & pain while still holding onto the central truths of the Character of God.
David in his prayer is has his whole life to reflect on and has come to these conclusion about God!
(EXP)(11) “Yours, Lord, is greatness and the power and the glory and the splendor and the majesty” David knows something about all of these Characteristics he has seen Saul in all of his majesty and he knows about his own wealth and power, but he says it is the Lord who is truly power and glorius and cloth in splendor and majesty. Isaiah came face to face with the person of God in a vision in Isaiah 6:1-6
    Isaiah 6:1–4 CSB
1 In the year that King Uzziah died, I saw the Lord seated on a high and lofty throne, and the hem of his robe filled the temple. 2 Seraphim were standing above him; they each had six wings: with two they covered their faces, with two they covered their feet, and with two they flew. 3 And one called to another: Holy, holy, holy is the Lord of Armies; his glory fills the whole earth. 4 The foundations of the doorways shook at the sound of their voices, and the temple was filled with smoke.
(EXP)(1) The first line is so important to understanding this vision. According to tradition Isaiah is the first cousin of Uzziah. There father’s were brothers, and Isaiah served under him. Isaiah became anxious when Uzziah died believing Judah was in trouble without a godly physical king ruling. Then God showed up.
When God is extolling God talking about his power, glory and majesty. He is doing it give rest to the petitioner letting him know we serve a Big God.
David reveals in his prayers 4 precepts or axioms about God.
    What are precepts or Axioms?
An established rule or self-evident truth Examples: What comes up must come down! For every effect there must be an effectual cause! Man can’t survive without oxygen. All self-evident truths.
David in his prayers expounds on at least 4.
    He is the owner
(EXP)(11) “For everything in the heavens and on earth belongs to you” God owns the title deed to external world, the sub-atomic world and the spiritual world. This statement is very hard to even understand at a theortical level because we live in world where people buy things to own the title deed, and we recognize there are limits to what a person can own. The ultra-Rich are rushing into space now to try and buy parts of space. This text tells us that everyone is only a temporary owner of property God owns it all. When you own it all you can distribute and depose of it as you see fit.
    Deuteronomy 10:14 CSB
14 The heavens, indeed the highest heavens, belong to the Lord your God, as does the earth and everything in it.
    (1) This is a sobering statement. Very humbling!
    He is the operator
(EXP)(11) “Yours, Lord is the kingdom, and you are exalted as head over all” He is sovereign over all creation.
When we say God is sovereign, we mean he is powerful and authoritative to the extent of being able to override all other powers and authorities. That’s my effort at a definition. Nothing can successfully stop any act or any event or design or purpose that God intends to certainly bring about….John Piper
“God from all eternity did . . . freely, and unchangeably ordain whatsoever comes to pass” Westminster Confession of Faith
    Isaiah 45:7–9 CSB
7 I form light and create darkness, I make success and create disaster; I am the Lord, who does all these things. 8 “Heavens, sprinkle from above, and let the skies shower righteousness. Let the earth open up so that salvation will sprout and righteousness will spring up with it. I, the Lord, have created it. 9 “Woe to the one who argues with his Maker— one clay pot among many. Does clay say to the one forming it, ‘What are you making?’ Or does your work say, ‘He has no hands’?
    Acts 4:27–28 CSB
27 “For, in fact, in this city both Herod and Pontius Pilate, with the Gentiles and the people of Israel, assembled together against your holy servant Jesus, whom you anointed, 28 to do whatever your hand and your will had predestined to take place.
    (11) David tells us He is sovereign over all his creation. Not a sparrow falls to the ground without his permission. Saints can you find comfort in that axiom or precept. Every intricate detail that happens in your life is under the direct authority of God. This is at the individual level as well as at the global level.
He is the source of all things
(EXP)(12) “Riches and Honor come from you, and you are the ruler of everything”
    (12) David says “Riches and Honor” come from you. These are things that God bestow on people. Honor and Riches ultimately come from God. This is especially important because David has just dedicated 100 tons of God from his own bank account. David says every dime I have comes from him as the source & any honor I receive comes from him as well.
    Psalm 50:9–12 CSB
9 I will not take a bull from your household or male goats from your pens, 10 for every animal of the forest is mine, the cattle on a thousand hills. 11 I know every bird of the mountains, and the creatures of the field are mine. 12 If I were hungry, I would not tell you, for the world and everything in it is mine.
Who talks like this!!!!???? If anyone else said this it could be considered blasphemy! But when you sit atop the food chain you get to brag!!
He is the giver all things
(EXP)(12) “power and might are in your hand, and it is in your hand to make great and to give strength to all” David understood where all of his power and strength came from. David says God power and might come from you, and you dispose of this power as you see fit. David looking back over his accomplishments is acknowledging that his life is a testament to power of God not his own power. Listen to Moses in Deut 8:18
    Deuteronomy 8:18 CSB
18 but remember that the Lord your God gives you the power to gain wealth, in order to confirm his covenant he swore to your ancestors, as it is today.
    (18) Moses got it right as well. Every accomplisment in your life is by the grace of God. Power and might are in his hand. And it is in his hand to make great and to give strength to all!
After this first portion of the prayer David breaks it up with a “praise break!” in 1 Chronicles 29:13
    1 Chronicles 29:13 CSB
13 Now therefore, our God, we give you thanks and praise your glorious name.
(EXP)(13) “Now Therefore” or “In conclusion”
Our God, we give you thanks and praise your glorious name……..One of the negative unintented consequences of schlorship in the Evangelical world is that “praise” became so controlled and rigid. Men lets take a trip back to the early church to see how men acted in worship. 1 Timothy 2:8
    1 Timothy 2:8 CSB
8 Therefore, I want the men in every place to pray, lifting up holy hands without anger or argument.
    (8) Men ain’t nothing wrong with lifting up your hands high and saying “Thank You Lord” for you:
    Know all things
Your power is from everlasting to everlasting
You are unchanging and always consistent
Your are all always with me.
Every good thing I have ever gotten before and after salvation came from your hand!!!!
And for all these things I just want to say “Thank You!”
    Daniel 4:34–35 CSB
34 But at the end of those days, I, Nebuchadnezzar, looked up to heaven, and my sanity returned to me. Then I praised the Most High and honored and glorified him who lives forever: For his dominion is an everlasting dominion, and his kingdom is from generation to generation. 35 All the inhabitants of the earth are counted as nothing, and he does what he wants with the army of heaven and the inhabitants of the earth. There is no one who can block his hand or say to him, “What have you done?”

    But Who am I??!!!

    Intro:

Emerson said that if the stars came out only once a year, everybody would stay up all night to behold them. We have seen the stars so often that we don’t bother to look at them anymore. We have grown accustomed to our blessings.
The Israelites in the wilderness got accustomed to their blessings, and God had to chasten the people (see Num 11). God had fed the nation with heavenly manna each morning, and yet the people were getting tired of it. “But now our whole being is dried up,” they said, “there is nothing at all except this manna before our eyes!” (v. 6).
Nothing but manna! They were experiencing a miracle of God’s provision every morning; yet they were no longer excited about it. Nothing but manna!1
You know it possible to get so used to God’s blessing that we forget to slow down and give thanks.
We are raising kids like this
We have been so diligent to “raise our children with more stuff than we had that it has created a bunch of ungrateful and entitled crumb snatchers”

    II. Man Receive

    1 Chronicles 29:14–19 CSB

    David Recognition

(EXP)(14) “But who am I” and who are my people, that we should be able to give as generously as this?” This is a question everyone in the room should be asking themselves on a daily. “Who am I to deserve any of your goodness!!!” Remember David is reflecting back in his life and looking retrospectively. He is in awe of the goodness of God in his life. Listen to David talk about it in the Psalms. Psalm 34:7-8
    Psalm 34:7–8 CSB
7 The angel of the Lord encamps around those who fear him, and rescues them. 8 Taste and see that the Lord is good. How happy is the person who takes refuge in him!
    Psalm 27:13–14 CSB
13 I am certain that I will see the Lord’s goodness in the land of the living. 14 Wait for the Lord; be strong, and let your heart be courageous. Wait for the Lord.
In both of these Psalm David is imploring the worshipper to “Taste and See that the Lord is good” what a powerful metaphor David uses in this text.
To Taste is to fully experience something and allow that thing to have total access to you. Outside of Sexual Activity eating is the most vulnerable thing you can do with someone. When you eat someone food you are saying I trust you and I am going to allow you to have access to my body by eating food that will have access to all of my internal organs.
When David says taste he is saying give God everything and watch what he does for you. You will experience his goodness and ways you cannot imagine.
    (14) At the end of his life David is consumed with profound gratitude about the fact God would give so generously to him and his people. Then he makes a statement. Remember last week what a principle of axiom is: That means a self-evident truth.
    1 Chronicles 29:14–16 CSB
14 But who am I, and who are my people, that we should be able to give as generously as this? For everything comes from you, and we have given you only what comes from your own hand. 15 For we are aliens and temporary residents in your presence as were all our ancestors. Our days on earth are like a shadow, without hope. 16 Lord our God, all this wealth that we’ve provided for building you a house for your holy name comes from your hand; everything belongs to you.
    (14) “For everything comes from you and we have given you only what comes from your own hand” Sometimes you have to slow down when you read to fully digest truth. This is one of those times. David says when we give anything to God we are simple returning his stuff. Think about every offering you give God is simply you returning his stuff.
has someone ever let you borrowing something that they expected back. My mother help me and my wife out while in KY with a large sum to help with bills and to help pay for school. Normally she would just give but this she ask for back. So she gave me money to manage and use to get myself out of a tight jam. When I paid her back I was so joyous and gracious because of what she did and I was now able to return her money. The money she gave me was never mine I was simple managing it so that I could give it back at a later date.
Saints everytime you get paid, get a blessing or your retirement goes up Our Father is letting you borrow more of his stuff. When you give a small portion of it there is no reason to be stingy, bitter, or angry when you give anymore than you would get that way if you gave back someone lawnmower they let you use because yours was broke.
David says “all that Gold, Silver, Copper, Wood and Iron that I gave is me simple giving you back what you have already given me!”
    (15) “For we are aliens and temporary residents in your presence as were all our ancestors. Our days on earth are like a shadow, without hope” Big strong David tells mankind that we are “Temporary, Transient, and Finite.” Transient: Means for only a short period of time! David says “Our days on earth are like a shadow” The only time a shadow is noticeable is while the sun is up. David describe a man life like a shadow that is only seen for about 8 hours a day. As quickly as it appears it disappears just as fast.
    What does David recognize?
I am unworthy in and off myself to participate in God’s plan for humanity and I know it! I don’t deserve a thing
When we give of our time, treasure and talent we are simple giving back to God something he has already given to us
Our lives are finite and temporary make the most of your time.

    David Motive

    1 Chronicles 29:17–18 CSB
17 I know, my God, that you test the heart and that you are pleased with what is right. I have willingly given all these things with an upright heart, and now I have seen your people who are present here giving joyfully and willingly to you. 18 Lord God of Abraham, Isaac, and Israel, our ancestors, keep this desire forever in the thoughts of the hearts of your people, and confirm their hearts toward you.
(EXP)(17) “I know, my God, that you test the heart and that you are pleased with what is right” David says that God is the only one who can truly test the motives of a man’s heart. Man can see acts of sin or service but he cannot discern the motives of the heart. God is the only one who evaluate the true reason does an act of service. David is pleases the heart of God when we give with a pure heart and motives.
    (17) David then speaks for himself and says “I have willingly given all these things with an upright heart” this tells you what kind of offering this is. The OT saints had the tithe(which was mandatory) then the “free-will offering” this was totally by choice. Meaning there was no moral component if you decided not to give. David says the offering for the house of the Lord came from the heart. I am not seeking a return or payback. My joy comes from participating on something that is far bigger than me.
    (17) David then talks about the willingness of the children of Israel to give to the completion of the Temple he says they gave:
Joyfully-In Jubilation. This term might be used to describe a husband and wife getting married and the joy the existed around that.
Willingly-No one gave out of compulsion or manipulative pressure. No one was ostracized if they did not give. The plea was put out and the body responded!
    (18) David then makes a plea to God. God please I ask that your people always have heart to give willingly, joyfully and graciously. That greatest act of Thanksgiving we can give is to give back a portion of what has been given to us.
There is no greater compliment a little boy can get if he has a great father than “you act just like your daddy!” When we are gracious and give we look just like our Daddy. Who gracious gave his most precious gift “his son” to die for the world.
Saints this holiday season and further let your life be define not by what you receive but what you give. Nothing wrong with receiving because that is a gift of God as well, but be gracious this season. One less gift isn’t going to hurt you. Be thankful with more than words this season.

    David Legacy

    1 Chronicles 29:19 CSB
19 Give my son Solomon an undivided heart to keep and to carry out all your commands, your decrees, and your statutes, and to build the building for which I have made provision.
    (18) David made a plea that the people of God will always have a heart of thanksgiving to give back to God what he has already gracious given to us. Then he makes a final plea in (19)
(EXP)(19) Give the leadership of my people an undivided heart to keep and to carry out all your commands, your decrees and your statutes.
    (19) David is praying that the leader “Solomon” have an undivided heart. Very interesting prayer. David greatest concern for his Son the leader of Israel is that he would not get distracted and began to chase frivolous endeavours. David says keep my son focused on your precepts, plans, and purposes.
    (19) Then he spells out what needed to be completed by Solomon. “to build the building for which I have made provision” David says keep my son focused on the starting and completion of the Temple. Thank the Lord Solomon did start and complete the Temple that David is talking about. This part of his prayer was answered.
    (19) “For which I have made provision” This is a very powerful preposition. There is so much truth in this statement. 2 Samuel 7:11-13
    2 Samuel 7:11–13 CSB
11 ever since the day I ordered judges to be over my people Israel. I will give you rest from all your enemies. “ ‘The Lord declares to you: The Lord himself will make a house for you. 12 When your time comes and you rest with your ancestors, I will raise up after you your descendant, who will come from your body, and I will establish his kingdom. 13 He is the one who will build a house for my name, and I will establish the throne of his kingdom forever.
(11-13) David wanted to build this house but he was told by Nathan the prophet the house would be built by someone else. This person would come through the loins of David, his son Solomon.
    (19) Rather than get bitter David planned, strategized and saved resources to used for the building of a temple that he would never see.
Saints this is the very definition of Legacy: Legacy is when you sacrifice your time, treasure and talents for endeavors you might not personally benefit from.
To be thankful is to give to things that may not return anything to your immediate personal benefit. It is the decision to build into something in the future for the overall benefit of the church. It is recognition now that the decision I make now will have long-term ramification and rippling effects in my family & church. Some of which I will not personally see.
Saints are you building into yourself or are you building into something you may not personally benefit from????
Saints the most important thing you can give your family this holiday season is the Gospel. This season as family gets together for food & fellowship make yourself a goal to talk to at least one family member about the Lord. Have a Spiritual discussion with a family member you know does not know the Lord.
The Season when you get the temptation to complain about something give thanks instead.
I’m no master gardener, but in my small-scale gardening, I’ve learned about companion planting. Some flowers, vegetables, and herbs grow better together. They don’t just tolerate one another; they encourage one another’s health and fruitfulness. But some plants can’t grow together. One steals nutrients, blocks the sun, or entices pests that hinder the growth of other plants.
The same is true in our life. Faith, humility, and thankfulness are companion practices, supporting and sustaining one another. As one increases, so do the others. But unbelief and boasting choke out the tiniest seedlings of thankfulness. Whereas humility and gratitude feed off each other, gratitude and pride cannot coexist in proximity. Either we’ll view ourselves as the source of good things and take the credit, or we’ll acknowledge God behind everything we have and redirect the glory to Him. As our lives center on God, gratitude grows. When self-focus sprouts and spreads, gratefulness withers.4
