  • INTRODUCTION - Read Exodus 19:1-6

    Exodus 19:1–6 ESV
On the third new moon after the people of Israel had gone out of the land of Egypt, on that day they came into the wilderness of Sinai. They set out from Rephidim and came into the wilderness of Sinai, and they encamped in the wilderness. There Israel encamped before the mountain, while Moses went up to God. The Lord called to him out of the mountain, saying, “Thus you shall say to the house of Jacob, and tell the people of Israel: ‘You yourselves have seen what I did to the Egyptians, and how I bore you on eagles’ wings and brought you to myself. Now therefore, if you will indeed obey my voice and keep my covenant, you shall be my treasured possession among all peoples, for all the earth is mine; and you shall be to me a kingdom of priests and a holy nation.’ These are the words that you shall speak to the people of Israel.”

Come to Final of 5 Sermons in Ch 14

Introduce the final player of the chapter, the third person of the Trinity… the Holy Spirit
HOW? Do it in such a way where we look at
The three verses that directly address the Holy Spirit by name, but also
Understand that those three verses are just the surface of what the Holy Spirit is accomplishing.
As we move forward, more will come to light as more detail is giving, BUT
You cannot fully grasp what the Spirit is accomplishing unless you look backwards.
Because, something NEW is happening, and its hard to tell what’s NEW if you don’t know the OLD.
I just dropped two hints there, did you catch it? Something NEW vs something OLD.

Most of the World is Familiar with the Structure of the Bible - Two Major Parts (Old & New Testament)

We Looked at this w/ the teenagers Wednesday Night TESTAMENT = COVENANT - The bible is split between Old covenant & New Cov
That doesn’t mean much if you DON”T KNOW WHAT COVENANT MEANS.
Covenant (simplified) - How two parties relate to each other, defines a relationship.
Examples: Marriage is an easy way of understanding covenant
    Defines who: husband & wife
Defines how long: till death do them part
Defines the behaviors: love and faithfulness no matter the situation (rich or poor, sickness or health)
The Two Testaments of the Bible describe for the Reader HOW GOD RELATES TO PEOPLE = This makes them His People and He, their God.
If you are thinking in these terms with your read through the Bible, it becomes very clear that God’s aim is to be in covenant with people.
Look at how the Bible begins and how it ends. (God creates Adam & Eve and tells them to make people, and in the beginning God is dwelling among them). Fast forward to the end of the scriptures and you see people to large to number and there in their midst is God.
Now in the middle of those two events is where we focus.
When we refer to Old Covenant, the two parties in covenant together are God and Israel. When we refer to the New Covenant, the two parties are God and all those who are in Jesus Christ by faith.
When you examine these two covenants and these two groups, you see many similarities in their relationship with God, but you also see differences.
One major similarity is that both groups Israel and the NT church had/has the law of God and it is foundational to their ongoing relationship/covenant w/ God.
Exodus 19:5 we see obedience in the covenant, AND what happens in chapter 20? The law is given, the 10 commandments.
    Exodus 19:5 ESV
    Now therefore, if you will indeed obey my voice and keep my covenant, you shall be my treasured possession among all peoples, for all the earth is mine;
John 14:15 we see obedience in the new covenant
    John 14:15 ESV
“If you love me, you will keep my commandments.
One major difference is the application of that law, where it was written.
When God gave Israel the law, part of it, 10 commandments were written on stone tablets, and the rest Moses wrote down on paper, and Israel was to obey & keep this law. Moses spoke these words to Israel Deuteronomy 5:1-2
    Deuteronomy 5:1–2 ESV
And Moses summoned all Israel and said to them, “Hear, O Israel, the statutes and the rules that I speak in your hearing today, and you shall learn them and be careful to do them. The Lord our God made a covenant with us in Horeb.
But the writer of Hebrews (turn to chapter 8) points out a problem as he is reviewing the History of the O.C. in order to contrast it with the N.C. Hebrews 8:8
    Hebrews 8:8 ESV
For he finds fault with them when he says:
Where was the fault in the old covenant? It was in the people.
Then he continues in Hebrews and quotes Jerm 31 and says, Hebrews 8:8-9
    Hebrews 8:8–9 ESV
For he finds fault with them when he says: “Behold, the days are coming, declares the Lord, when I will establish a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah, not like the covenant that I made with their fathers on the day when I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt. For they did not continue in my covenant, and so I showed no concern for them, declares the Lord.
He will make a new covenant
Notice it is with the house of Israel - its not right to think the OC still exists at the same time with the NC, making two covenant people with God. (Look down at verse Hebrews 8:13 you see that the old is going away as the new comes in… Jews who believe in Jesus are in the NC.
    Hebrews 8:13 ESV
In speaking of a new covenant, he makes the first one obsolete. And what is becoming obsolete and growing old is ready to vanish away.
Look at what he says about the new covenant in Hebrews 8:10
    Hebrews 8:10 ESV
For this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, declares the Lord: I will put my laws into their minds, and write them on their hearts, and I will be their God, and they shall be my people.
Now how does he do that? By sending the Holy Spirit to indwell anyone who believes in Jesus Christ.
Verse 12 says they will be forgiven all inequities and sins remembered no more! Hebrews 8:12 HOW? Thru Jesus, the Son, the Lamb of God
    Hebrews 8:12 ESV
For I will be merciful toward their iniquities, and I will remember their sins no more.”

This is what we see unfolding in the Gospels and into Acts, but this is what Jesus is teaching about in Ch 13-17

All these promises in this chapter are covenant terms and promises. (You do this, I do that, we will be together, and it will be forever.)
AND WHAT YOU ARE SEEING EXPLAINED IN THIS CHAPTER AND THROUGH 15, 16, 17 is that your covenant relationship with God is made eternally secure BECAUSE OF THE SPIRIT given to you to dwell in you. ULTIMATELY ACCOMPLISHING THE WILL OF THE FATHER BY APPLY THE WORK OF THE SON.
Your salvation, which isn’t about a place, but is about your relationship with God is secure by the Trinity, the Triune God, the Father, the Son , and the Holy Spirit.
REMAINDER OF OUR TIME TO FOCUS ON TWO PHRASES THAT GUARANTEE OUR COVENANT RELATIONSHIP WITH GOD
The Son Going… and .… The Spirit Coming (with most of our time on the Spirit Coming)

    THE SON GOING

Jesus Makes It Clear that it is necessary that He goes away. (Two Ways to think about it)

We will see through the next two chapters (hinted at already) that he must go in order that another Helper can come, the Holy Spirit.
In his absence the helper will come. Looking ahead at John 16:7 (see that in Jesus ascension, His going to the Father)
But I also believe there is a functional necessity to Jesus going away, but this is more about his going to the cross.
What is that for, the cross? To deal with sin! And why is that necessary for the sending of the Holy Spirit? - Go back to the though last week, when we looked at God making home in us… What did we say was necessary for God to dwell, abide in our hearts? The house needed to be cleaned. What fellowship does light have with darkness, righteousness with wickedness??
The Sending of the Spirit is God taking up home in your heart, and before that could happen Jesus needed to deal with the sin of your heart.
Now… where did I get this idea in the text? John 14:30-31
Jesus speaks about his going away “I will no longer talk much with you”. WHY??? I am convinced he is speaking about his going to the cross to deal with Sin. WHy???
    Two things that are said.
Who is coming to him? “The ruler of this world” - This is setting up a great spiritual battle, from the garden to the cross. Satan is coming at him through Judas, through the elders of Israel, they will arrest him for sin, and condemn him for blasphemy.
But Jesus says, “he has no CLAIM come over me”… No sin the accuser can actually accuse Jesus of… NO just reason for Jesus to die.
YET!!! He allows the plan to unfold, and he is executed… Why did he let it unfold, why did he let Satan’s plan to come about?
Because what Satan, Judas, the elders of Israel, the crowd that yelled crucify him, what they all intended for evil, God intended for good.
Verse 31 shows us God’s intention when Jesus says, “but I do as the Father has commanded me”
And what is he doing? John 10:11-18
    John 10:11–18 ESV
I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep. For this reason the Father loves me, because I lay down my life that I may take it up again. No one takes it from me, but I lay it down of my own accord. I have authority to lay it down, and I have authority to take it up again. This charge I have received from my Father.”
This is the going of the son that makes the coming of the Spirit possible. The son preparing the dwelling place of the Spirit, out hearts, by sprinkling them clean with his blood. 2 Corinthians 5:21
    2 Corinthians 5:21 ESV
For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.
Let me take you back to Hebrews 10:14-18, so that you can see the writer of Hebrews draw this conclusion by reflecting on the promise of the N C.
    Hebrews 10:14–18 ESV
For by a single offering he has perfected for all time those who are being sanctified. And the Holy Spirit also bears witness to us; for after saying, “This is the covenant that I will make with them after those days, declares the Lord: I will put my laws on their hearts, and write them on their minds,” then he adds, “I will remember their sins and their lawless deeds no more.” Where there is forgiveness of these, there is no longer any offering for sin.
Now that we have seen the work of the son by Going, we can look to the Spirit coming…
    As a helper
As the teacher of the truth
    To be with us forever.
Before we look at this, lets just read a few verses from Ezekiel that prophecy of this coming of the Spirit.
    Ezekiel 36:16-18
    Ezekiel 36:16–18 ESV
The word of the Lord came to me: “Son of man, when the house of Israel lived in their own land, they defiled it by their ways and their deeds. Their ways before me were like the uncleanness of a woman in her menstrual impurity. So I poured out my wrath upon them for the blood that they had shed in the land, for the idols with which they had defiled it.
    Ezekiel 36:25-27
    Ezekiel 36:25–27 ESV
I will sprinkle clean water on you, and you shall be clean from all your uncleannesses, and from all your idols I will cleanse you. And I will give you a new heart, and a new spirit I will put within you. And I will remove the heart of stone from your flesh and give you a heart of flesh. And I will put my Spirit within you, and cause you to walk in my statutes and be careful to obey my rules.

    THE SPIRIT COMING

Who is the Holy Spirit Verses 15-17

Comes from the Father at the request of the Son
The Father and the Son are together sending the Spirit to accomplish the great work of building the church.
We know Jesus is building his church (Mtt 16), but we also know that the Father is providing for Him at the Son’s request.
Psalm 2:8 - So how will Jesus accomplish this? By the Father sending the Holy Spirit.
This is the context of the book of Acts, the beginning of the Great commission, the disciples making disciples of all nations, after they receive the H.S.
Therefore, as Verse 16 says, the Holy Spirit is our Helper.
One who comes along with you to help you where you lack.
We must understand this, we lack greatly when it comes to doing the works of God.
John 15:5 Jesus explains our spiritual inabilities apart from Him as he describes our relationship to Him as vines to a branch. And it is the Spirit that flows from Him to us.
With man it is impossible, but with God ALL THINGS ARE POSSIBLE.
The Spirit is called the Spirit of Truth.
Of course we can ask the question… “what is truth?”
This is a question the world cannot accurately answer. The world that lives in rebellious unbelief. Disconnected from God and therefore disconnected from what is true.
God is true and from him comes all truth.
But when you have His Spirit, you understand Him, you have access to his mind, his knowledge, his wisdom. Therefore, revealing the way of life. 1 Corinthians 2:12
    1 Corinthians 2:12 ESV
Now we have received not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, that we might understand the things freely given us by God.
The Spirit is Our Teacher Verse 25-26
Teaching us the mind of God, the mind of Christ. The way of righteousness and holiness. 1 Corinthians 2:14-16
This enables us to walk with Jesus, to live as He lived, to do the works that He did. Verse 18-19
He will be with us forever: John 14:16 “And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Helper, to be with you forever,”
    Romans 8:1-13
    Romans 8:1–13 ESV
There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. For the law of the Spirit of life has set you free in Christ Jesus from the law of sin and death. For God has done what the law, weakened by the flesh, could not do. By sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh and for sin, he condemned sin in the flesh, in order that the righteous requirement of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not according to the flesh but according to the Spirit. For those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit set their minds on the things of the Spirit. For to set the mind on the flesh is death, but to set the mind on the Spirit is life and peace. For the mind that is set on the flesh is hostile to God, for it does not submit to God’s law; indeed, it cannot. Those who are in the flesh cannot please God. You, however, are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if in fact the Spirit of God dwells in you. Anyone who does not have the Spirit of Christ does not belong to him. But if Christ is in you, although the body is dead because of sin, the Spirit is life because of righteousness. If the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, he who raised Christ Jesus from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through his Spirit who dwells in you. So then, brothers, we are debtors, not to the flesh, to live according to the flesh. For if you live according to the flesh you will die, but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live.
In Christ, the Spirit has set you free from sin and death and made you capable of truly living. V1-4
With the mind of Christ that you have received from the Spirit, set your mind on Heavenly Things, not earthly things. V5-7
With the mind of Christ, submit to the law of God and you will please God. V 8
This will be accomplished by the power of the Spirit that raised Jesus from the dead and dwells in you. V9-11
By the Spirit, fight sin that dwells in you, put it to death. This is the mark of the Spirit-filled children of God. . V12-14
