    WALK-THRU THE TEXT

John 16:5–6 - Jesus brings up his departure again.
“But now I am going to him who sent me, and none of you asks me, ‘Where are you going?’ But because I have said these things to you, sorrow has filled your heart.”
He notices their lack of engagement in such an astounding topic “none of you ask me”.
But he senses “sorrow in their hearts”.
John 16:7 - He starts the engagement AND He wants to comfort their sorrow.
“Nevertheless, I tell you the truth: it is to your advantage that I go away, for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you. But if I go, I will send him to you.”
First obvious point: Jesus says that his leaving will be to their advantage.
Side note: being narrow focused, only thinking about what is right in front of you, can lead you unnecessary sorrow. Typically, we get in that mindset because we are focused on the effects to ourselves. In those instances we are considering that God is doing something much bigger than the immediate, what we are feeling at the time. TRUST IN GOD NOT THE CIRCUMSTANCES - this will cause you to be tossed to and fro by the emotions of life.
What's the advantage of his leaving: SENDING THE HELPER - the HOLY SPIRIT
(The rest of the passage can be viewed by THREE STATEMENTS ABOUT THE WORK OF THE HOLY SPIRIT - “He Will”)
1st He Will John 16:8–11 “And when he comes, he will convict the world...concerning sin and righteousness and judgment: concerning sin, because they do not believe in me; concerning righteousness, because I go to the Father, and you will see me no longer; concerning judgment, because the ruler of this world is judged.”
Convict = to show, to reveal, to convince - USUALLY, it is used when showing/revealing someone’s error - FOR CORRECTION
Convict the world concerning sin: there guilt before God
Jesus says in John 8:24 (SLIDE)
    John 8:24 ESV
I told you that you would die in your sins, for unless you believe that I am he you will die in your sins.”
Convict the world concerning righteousness: the perfection of Jesus Christ, their only Savior.
Paul explains: 1 Timothy 2:5–6 (SLIDE)“
    1 Timothy 2:5–6 ESV
For there is one God, and there is one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus, who gave himself as a ransom for all, which is the testimony given at the proper time.
Convict the world concerning judgment: God’s judgment on the wicked, rebellious world has already began, and it started with Christ victory over Satan in his death and resurrection.
Jesus spoke this in John 12:31-32 (SLIDE)
    John 12:31–32 ESV
Now is the judgment of this world; now will the ruler of this world be cast out. And I, when I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all people to myself.”
Paul speaks of the full judgment of the world before Jesus Acts 17:30-31 (SLIDE)
    Acts 17:30–31 ESV
The times of ignorance God overlooked, but now he commands all people everywhere to repent, because he has fixed a day on which he will judge the world in righteousness by a man whom he has appointed; and of this he has given assurance to all by raising him from the dead.”
John 16:12 Jesus interjects in-between his “he will” statements ““I still have many things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now.”
2nd He Will John 16:13 “When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth, for he will not speak on his own authority, but whatever he hears he will speak, and he will declare to you the things that are to come.”
The Holy Spirit will declare, speak, communicate truth of God directly to the apostles.
While there is application here to us, the main point in this statement is the truth that will be spoken to the apostles as they begin building the church through their preaching and writing… and it will be their words, which will be the words of God delivered to them by the Spirit, that will carry on for thousands of years, convicting the world of gospel and building the church.
This is what we call the apostolic doctrine/teaching. It is the truth the apostles received initially by the direct teaching of Jesus, but then filled out and completed by the guiding of the Holy Spirit.
It is what the church in Acts fed on and it is what all believers and churches must also be feeding on and building upon.
    Acts 2:42 (SLIDE)
    Acts 2:42 ESV
And they devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and the prayers.
    Ephesians 2:19-22
    Ephesians 2:19–22 ESV
So then you are no longer strangers and aliens, but you are fellow citizens with the saints and members of the household of God, built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Christ Jesus himself being the cornerstone, in whom the whole structure, being joined together, grows into a holy temple in the Lord. In him you also are being built together into a dwelling place for God by the Spirit.
What a foundation and what a building… and this is us, together… standing on the promises of God, leaning everything on Jesus. A dwelling place, a temple of God by the Spirit for the world gain access to God.
3rd He Will John 16:14–15 “He will glorify me, for he will take what is mine and declare it to you. All that the Father has is mine; therefore I said that he will take what is mine and declare it to you.”
Glorify: to honor, to praise, to magnify - to make much of by revealing to those who do not yet know. (much like a proud father reveals the accomplishment of a Son). The accomplishment in itself is glorious, but the more people can know, the more glory the Son is given.
But exactly how is the Holy Spirit doing this? WITH THE TRUTH:
NAMELY SPEAKING, DECLARING, COMMUNICATING THE TRUTH ABOUT JESUS
What is He saying? What has He told the Apostles? - the fullness of who Jesus is and what He has and is accomplishing in the world.
The Spirit has revealed to the apostles, who have written it down for us to see that Jesus shares with the Father: life, goodness, and love
They share glory, and Jesus has revealed that in his living, teaching, dying, and resurrection, and now the Spirit is taking that glory to the ends of the earth.
What Has the Spirit revealed to the apostles, that must be made know to the world????
That Jesus is the word, and the was with God, and the word was God
That Jesus the word, became flesh and dwelt among us. and that his glory has been revealed as the only Son from the Father.
That Jesus is full of what we need: he is full of grace and truth.
Why do we need these two things so much? Because we have been lied to by Satan, told that we do not need God, but we can fulfill ourselves if we just do the opposite of what God has commanded.
And we have all fallen for it. And we have a name for believing the lie and turning from God… its called sin.
This has caused us unrepairable damage. Nothing we can fix. It has removed and fellowship with God, and brought upon us judgment, condemnation, and the wrath and anger of God for our sin and rebellion.
So Christ has come, full of truth, as light revealing to the world through the Spirit, the TRUTH ABOUT our sin, the necessity of being made right with God, and the only way through trusting Him, following Him.
And here we see that Jesus is full of grace… saving the undeserving, the weak, the ungodly. Giving the gift of eternal life to those who would turn away from their sin and idols and follow Him to eternity.
I conclude this point by echoing the writer of the Hebrews, who speaks the words of the Holy Spirit: Hebrews 3:7–8 “Therefore, as the Holy Spirit says, “Today, if you hear his voice, do not harden your hearts.”
Today, the Holy Spirit is calling you to faith in Jesus Christ, to walk away from your sin, and cling to Christ for salvation. To declare your need of forgiveness with your mouth and believing in your heart that Jesus rose from the dead. Profess your needing of cleansing with baptizing, and be baptized into the body of Christ. Today, if you hear his voice, do not harden your hearts, but come to Christ.

A CLOSER LOOK AT THE SPIRIT

The Christian church is 2000 years old. But the last 150 years, it seems we have gotten a little sideways with the Holy Spirit. Much of what Christians think about the Holy Spirit is less about the glorification of Christ and more about individual experience and guidance.
Not that the Holy Spirit does create divine experience and guides the individual - but when the end of goal of the Holy Spirit is about the experience and the individuals guidance, then we have (at best) misunderstood the work of the Holy Spirit and (at worst) undermine Him, mistreat Him.
The end result of the work of the Holy Spirit is the glorification of Christ, not the experience of the individual. Christ is primary and our “personal experience” is secondary.
USE THE BAPTIST FAITH AND MESSAGE TO OUTLINE THE ROLE OF THE HOLY SPIRIT (much is just a rewording of what we see here)
Through illumination He enables men to understand the truth.
Illumination: light in darkness OR opening the eyes of the blind.
    2 Corinthians 4:4
    2 Corinthians 4:4 ESV
In their case the god of this world has blinded the minds of the unbelievers, to keep them from seeing the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God.
So what does he do? He brings the truth to the hearts of sinners… which leads to the next point
He Exalts Christ - who is the light of the world, why because he is full of truth.
When the Spirit is present, Christ is made know John 15:26 ““But when the Helper comes, whom I will send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth, who proceeds from the Father, he will bear witness about me.”
He convicts men of sin, of righteousness, and of judgment....
All that was covered by the lies of Satan are now being revealed through the illumination of the Spirit.
He calls men to the savior and effects regeneration.
1689 LBCF out of that state of sin and death in which they are by nature, to grace and salvation by Jesus Christ, (Eph 2:1-6); enlightening their minds spiritually and savingly to understand the things of God, (Act 26:18; Eph 1:17-18); taking away their heart of stone, and giving to them a heart of flesh, (Eze 36:26); renewing their wills, and by His almighty power determining them to that which is good, and effectually drawing them to Jesus Christ,
He cultivates Christian character, comforts believers, and bestows spiritual gifts by which they serve God thru His church
And what is he working with - TRUTH - the words and wisdom and knowledge of the eternal God.
He enlightens and empowers the believer and the church in worship, evangelism, and service (worship, walk, and witness).
and what should be the purpose of those three things… not our good feelings, not our experiences, but the exaltation of Jesus Christ.
Again, this doesn’t eliminate or reduce the experience… the rest of chapter 16 will speak of our experience of joy and peace as we are seal for redemption by the indwelling Holy Spirit.

LETS APPLY ALL OF THIS TO OUR LIVES (INDIVIDUALLY AND CORPORATELY)

The big mistake would be to know all about the work and power of the Holy Spirit and then NOT emphasize that it is accomplished through the faith and obedience of people.
Its not like gravity (though I’m afraid we treat the Holy Spirit like gravity), like it is a force that will just happen, independent of what we do.
Jesus doesn’t say, that he will send him into the world, he says, I WILL SEND HIM TO YOU
What does Jesus call The Holy Spirit the HELPER not the ACCOMPLISHER
So what we must understand is the work of the Holy Spirit is the work of the Christian.
The Priorities of the Holy Spirit are to be the priorities of the believer.
So lets take those three “He Will” statements and apply them to our lives.
Priority - Our Priority is Jesus Christ and His Glory.
So much distraction (individuals & corporately) - the lies of the world / and we chase them
What must remember? TO LIVE IS CHRIST - to live for the glory of Christ is true life, eternal life
Colossians says are life is hidden with Christ - He is our life, our reason for living.
What we will see over the next few weeks is that is a life of joy and peace.
Is this not what the world craves, joy and peace. - ITS YOURS IF YOU ARE IN CHRIST.
Let no the distraction of the world draw us away from Him, and his joy and peace.
This is the priority of the gathered church
    Not buildings, budgets, and brands
But Christ, who is the head, and we are his body. Worshiping him, serving him, glorifying him.
Pursuit - Our Pursuit is All Truth
And God’s truth is revealed in God’s word.
The Spirit worked through the apostles declaring to them all truth, that they may deliever it to us.
And in the truth of God through his word we have all we need
For life and godliness - to live a life for the glory of God / father son and holy spirit.
That we might be sanctified, set apart from the world.
Why for the sake of separation, NO FOR THE SAKE OF PROCLAIMATION.
Purpose - Our Purpose is to Proclaim to the World
When these things come together and you are living, walking in the Spirit, you are affecting the darkness around you.
What God the Holy Spirit reveals in a person, it is not for the purpose of remaining in that person, but to be expressed, for the glory of Christ and for the conviction of sinners.
Live the truth, speak the truth, sing the truth to not just other Christians but to world that they might be convicted of sin, righteousness, and judgment, and turn, believe and follow Christ.
    Psalm 25:4-5 (SLIDES)
    Psalm 25:4–5 ESV
Make me to know your ways, O Lord; teach me your paths. Lead me in your truth and teach me, for you are the God of my salvation; for you I wait all the day long.
