  • INTRODUCTION

The week the operation in Iran began, we had watched something on the continental congress and the creation of the continental army.
That morning I was listening to the power and force and strength of the US military and thinking about how far it had come. In awe
now; with all that power and strength what has become the slogan of US pursuit of peace… peace thru strength
To me; this seems like a good analogy of modern mindset, in order to live a life of peace I must build myself up, financially; physically, emotionally FATAL FLAW - heart and flesh will fail
the biblical mindset probably looks more like the contention congress in 1775 when they stood looking at the greatest military world power in all the world and their status was weak
They went to war, not on strength but in faith, faith in the strength and character of one man; general george Washington

    I. PROBLEMS IN THE WORLD

Trouble as old as creation (macro)
in the beginning God created the heavens and the earth… God saw everything he had made and said it is very good.
Enter in the Father of Lies, the First Murderer.
Satan has one plan: to make hell on earth for God’s crowning creatures, his image bearers.
    Mission Accomplished
From his deception, through Adam sin came into the world. Following right after death.
This turned the creature against creator, and even creature against creature.
Perfect chaos - Satan achieved his aim.
    From that moment: Conflict wages
Death reigns, darkness prowls, the devil rules the world.
Pain, sorrow, suffering, hatred, murder, greed, lust, on and on.
The conflict seems to have sides, like a battle.
Enmity (strife) between the side of the woman and the seed of the serpent.
Point lost over time: we make the battle of good and evil about God versus the world.
But the battle is fought between the God’s people and Satan’s people.
Cain and Able - Jesus said, you of either my Father who is in heaven, or your father the devil.
THIS MAKES THE CONFLICT MORE PERSONAL
A Problem especially for Disciples (micro)
Two Ways the people of God are affected by the tribulation/trouble of the world.
First, As attack from the enemy, the seed of the serpent. Jesus made this clear in chapter 15. (FLIP BACK TO John 15:18-19
This is a good thing. Because it makes clear which side you belong.
What does James say, James 4:4
    James 4:4 ESV
You adulterous people! Do you not know that friendship with the world is enmity with God? Therefore whoever wishes to be a friend of the world makes himself an enemy of God.
The shift, the trend is to try to live like the world but keep the title disciple. - Undoable, unthinkable, = lukewarm, spew you out.
Second: Purging the world out of us, by God. Again in chapter 15 John 15:1-2
Typically, this takes place through affliction, or as Peter says, by affliction by fire. TURN TO PETER 1:6
    1:6-7
What is the end, 1:13-16 - Holiness, to reflect the character and nature of God while you are in the world.
If you do that, guess what will come. 4:12-17
What This is Displaying, and what Jesus is showing in John 16 is this great contrast between his disciples and the world.
There are citizens of the Kingdom of the beloved Son, and there are the enemies of God in the domain of darkness.
For God’s citizens, there is sure to be conflict, but just as sure, there is to be peace in Christ.
This is the paradox of Christian living - Peace will facing tribulation and trial. HOW??????

II. JESUS HAS OVERCOME THE WORLD

Fill the weight and importance of this word Overcome = To Conquer
When we think about someone we know overcoming something: we see it as a supreme struggle, usually just gets through by skin of the teeth, but victorious none the less.
In my mind, I here overcome and I don’t see much glory… I think that is just a cultural shlift.
We see overcoming, as just a victory, no matter how close the win was.… 52-50.
    BUT FOR JESUS -
This is more than a victory, this is an annihilation. - A Dominant Victory / A Crushing Defeat
How do we know??? God promised this kind of victory in Genesis 3:15
    Genesis 3:15 ESV
I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and her offspring; he shall bruise your head, and you shall bruise his heel.”
    This makes Jesus the conqueror!
Jesus the Conqueror - When all else were conquered.
Adam - was conquered in the garden - Jesus conquered in the garden
Israel - was conquered in the wilderness - Jesus conquered in the wilderness
Solomon - was conquered as the son of David - Jesus conquered as the Son of David on through his death, much more through his resurrection.
    Revelation 5:5
    Revelation 5:5 ESV
And one of the elders said to me, “Weep no more; behold, the Lion of the tribe of Judah, the Root of David, has conquered, so that he can open the scroll and its seven seals.”
    Revelation 6:2
    Revelation 6:2 ESV
And I looked, and behold, a white horse! And its rider had a bow, and a crown was given to him, and he came out conquering, and to conquer.
    Revelation 17:14
    Revelation 17:14 ESV
They will make war on the Lamb, and the Lamb will conquer them, for he is Lord of lords and King of kings, and those with him are called and chosen and faithful.”

III. PEACE AND COURAGE IN CHRIST

Jesus parting words, “I leave as the victor… I have conquered the world and its ruler, and in me you have my victory, you have my peace, and in me you can fight and conquer.
The key words here are “in me”
Jesus says, I am … the way, the truth, and the life,
    Believe in Him
Abide in Him, abide in my word, abide in my love
And in him you have peace
    Peace in Christ
Under the protection of God almighty Romans 8:31–32 “What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us? He who did not spare his own Son but gave him up for us all, how will he not also with him graciously give us all things?”
Dealt with our sin, our rebellion, our guilt and judgment
He has given us his righteousness
Saved you, redeemed you from the work of the enemy outside and inside you.
Peace in Christ is being at peace with the sovereign, all powerful God of the universe, the ruler of rulers,
Imagine it like being in a see through storm shelter, and a tornado is raging around you, you witness and even feel the pain of the trouble in your heart, but there you are protected, b
but really, the illustration works the best if you do not even fear if the storm shelter fails, because the body they may kill, but His truth abideth still, his kingdom is forever.
Courage to Conquer with Christ - not leaving in the peace of shelter, but in the tribulation of the world.
Jesus gives two commands in all of chapter 16. Ask and take heart/take courage.
Those are the commands of a general preparing his soliders for battle.
Whatever you need to fight in my name, ask and I will give it to you.
But even better, the promise that no other general can give his troops, guaranteed victory.
So the command to take heart, to take courage really seems like a command to believe in the general, to trust in the Finished work of Christ.
Because to trust in his victory is to live in full confidence of the outcome.
So we go forth doing the works of Jesus, testifying to his work and his gospel. Ready to let good and kindred go, this mortal life also.
We go forth in Christ by faith, because in him are these realities John writes in his first letter.
You have overcome the evil one.
You have overcome the spirit of the antichrist
you have over come the world.
We fight in this reality won for us by Christ until the final day. Until the fullness of salvation is realized, and the truth of Revelation 21:7 is ours in Christ,
    Revelation 21:7 ESV
The one who conquers will have this heritage, and I will be his God and he will be my son.
