  • 1 John 1:1–4 NKJV
That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we have looked upon, and our hands have handled, concerning the Word of life— the life was manifested, and we have seen, and bear witness, and declare to you that eternal life which was with the Father and was manifested to us— that which we have seen and heard we declare to you, that you also may have fellowship with us; and truly our fellowship is with the Father and with His Son Jesus Christ. And these things we write to you that your joy may be full.

Christmas Means Salvation Is By Grace

    1. Introduction: 1 John 1:1-4 describes what Christmas means.
    2. Christmas means salvation is by grace
    a. In calling Jesus, “The Word of life” and “The eternal life,” in 1 John 1:1-2, John is
saying that salvation comes through Jesus Christ alone (John 14:6)
    b. Christianity is the only religion in which salvation has already been earned for us.
Every other religion is about doing things to save yourself.
    c. If you say that “All that matters is that you’re a good person,” you’re living the
doctrine of salvation by works. It will fill you with fear and insecurity, pride and
disdain, or devastation and self-loathing, but it will not save you.
    d. If the message of Christmas is true, then we can be sure of our salvation. If not,
    we are on our own.
“We’re not being told here that Jesus Christ has life or gives life. And this is not just
physical life, this is eternal life – salvation. It doesn’t just say He has it or He gives it, it
    says He is it.”
“Jesus Christ, according to Christmas, is God come to save us. To do for us what we
can’t do for ourselves. To know Him is eternal life.”

    Christmas Means Fellowship With God

    a. It’s not enough to just believe in or obey God. God became human so that we
can have a relationship with Him.
    b. God veiled Himself in flesh so that we could see Him without being destroyed.
(reference to “Hark the Herald Angels Sing” in explanation)
2 Christ, by highest heaven adored, Christ, the everlasting Lord, late in time behold him come, offspring of the Virgin's womb: veiled in flesh the Godhead see; hail th'incarnate Deity, pleased with us in flesh to dwell, Jesus, our Immanuel. [Refrain]
    c. We must be willing to go to do what it takes to get close to Him.
    d. Invitation: What will it take to get close to God in your life?
“Christmas means God has gone to infinite lengths to come near you.”
“God is not content to simply be a concept to be believed or even something to warm
your heart. He is not even content to be a powerful force that you bow to in some way.
Because He became human, and one of the reasons is so that you can have fellowship
    with Him.”

Christmas Means Love and Joy From God

“Christmas can make you whole, because Christmas proves that love is not something
that just happened inside a human brain as a chemical response, but love pre-existed
the world, created the world, and is redeeming the world.” Tim Keller
