    1 “Ho! Everyone who thirsts, Come to the waters; And you who have no money, Come, buy and eat. Yes, come, buy wine and milk Without money and without price.

    the text for the day:
    Matthew 6:12 NKJV
    12 And forgive us our debts, As we forgive our debtors.
    Introduction:
    what does it mean to forgive people?
    how do we come to an understanding?
    what does it look like to be in a church relationship with others.

    1. forgiveness comes from the Lord.

    1 John 1:9 NKJV
    9 If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
    Ephesians 1:7 NKJV
    7 In Him we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of His grace
    Isaiah 1:18 NKJV
    18 “Come now, and let us reason together,” Says the Lord, “Though your sins are like scarlet, They shall be as white as snow; Though they are red like crimson, They shall be as wool.
    Romans 5:8 NKJV
    8 But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.
    Often we don’t remember as people what God has done for us.
    God has forgiven entirely of all my sins.
    in the courts of heaven.
    Psalm 103:12 NKJV
    12 As far as the east is from the west, So far has He removed our transgressions from us.
    when you are in Christ you are entirely forgiven.

    2. There is a difference between cosigning and forgiving.

    •does not mean that any wrongs done to you were acceptable.
    •does not diminish the evil done against you, nor is it a denial of what happened.
    •is a key part of not letting those wrongs hurt you any longer.
    •does not take away the consequences the other person will face because of his or her sin.
    •is letting go of your desire to hurt the other person. Simply put, forgiveness means you “cancel a debt.”
    •is a difficult and uncomfortable process. When you make a decision to forgive, God provides the grace and strength to forgive and to maintain a heart of forgiveness.
    •is not weakness. It is the most powerful thing you can do. Refusing to forgive allows Satan to continue to hurt you; forgiveness stops the destructive power of Satan in one’s life.
    •is not reconciliation. It takes two to reconcile but only one to forgive.
    •does not depend on the other person’s actions, and it is not probationary (for example, saying, “I will forgive you as long as you aren’t drinking”).
    •does not require you to become a “doormat” nor does it require you to allow the offender to hurt you again.
    •is a gift you give to the offender. Trust, on the other hand, must be earned. You must set boundaries.
    •does not wait for the offender to repent. Unlike God, who provides forgiveness when we repent, humans cannot demand repentance before granting forgiveness.
    •is about how much you trust God to take care of you.
    •is experiencing empathy for the offender, humility about your own sinfulness, and gratitude for being forgiven by God and others.
    Forgiveness is the not the same as reconciliation. forgiveness is letting go of our desire for punishment for other people.

    3. We are called to forgive others, in the way we have been forgiven.

    12 And forgive us our debts, As we forgive our debtors.
    The word debts is an Aramaic word that actually means debt in the way that we get a credit card statement. The Roman empire used to keep a record of taxes owed.
    Matthew was a Tax collector for the Roman Empire. Mark 2:14 (“14 As He passed by, He saw Levi the son of Alphaeus sitting at the tax office. And He said to him, “Follow Me.” So he arose and followed Him.” )
    So Matthew is familiar with the roman tax practices.
    we are called to this relationship with God and other people.
    Colossians 3:13 NKJV
    13 bearing with one another, and forgiving one another, if anyone has a complaint against another; even as Christ forgave you, so you also must do.
    you never know what you may need.
    there may be a time when you need more grace than you realize.
    Conclusion:
    as we come to understand what we have been forgiven from, it should make us want to forgive others.
    we have to know the difference between forgiveness and reconciliation.
    we need to remember that life is judged as a whole and not in seasons of struggle. we need to be gracious to others who are in need and we also need accept the forgiveness we need,
