    Psalm 99:2–3 NKJV
2 The Lord is great in Zion, And He is high above all the peoples. 3 Let them praise Your great and awesome name— He is holy.
    Giving
    Acts 20:35 NKJV
35 I have shown you in every way, by laboring like this, that you must support the weak. And remember the words of the Lord Jesus, that He said, ‘It is more blessed to give than to receive.’ ”
    Today’s Text:
    Matthew 6:16–18 NKJV
16 “Moreover, when you fast, do not be like the hypocrites, with a sad countenance. For they disfigure their faces that they may appear to men to be fasting. Assuredly, I say to you, they have their reward. 17 But you, when you fast, anoint your head and wash your face, 18 so that you do not appear to men to be fasting, but to your Father who is in the secret place; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you openly.

    1. Motive is what it’s about.

    Matthew 6:16 NKJV
16 “Moreover, when you fast, do not be like the hypocrites, with a sad countenance. For they disfigure their faces that they may appear to men to be fasting. Assuredly, I say to you, they have their reward.
the word here translated hypocrites could also be translated ‘pretenders.’
    hyp•o•crite \ˈhi-pə-ˌkrit\ noun
[Middle English ypocrite, from Anglo-French, from Late Latin hypocrita, from Greek hypokritēs actor, hypocrite, from hypokrinesthai] 13th century
1: a person who puts on a false appearance of virtue or religion
2: a person who acts in contradiction to his or her stated beliefs or feelings—hypocrite adjective
Inc Merriam-Webster, Merriam-Webster’s Collegiate Dictionary. (Springfield, MA: Merriam-Webster, Inc., 2003).
    Sad countenance.
    Disfigured faces
that they may appear to be fasting.

    2. Keep it together.

    Matthew 6:17 NKJV
17 But you, when you fast, anoint your head and wash your face,
it means keep up basic hygiene.
it means not to look like your fasting so that people wont ask you if you are okay. this work is deeply spiritual (some spiritual work is private, not that you cant talk to your pastor’s.)
in an age of social media where we don’t do anything without our phones, we have to do some things without public knowledge.
although various form of fasting are mentioned in the Old Testament only one is required by Old Testament and that is on the day of atonement. Leviticus 16:29-34 “29 “This shall be a statute forever for you: In the seventh month, on the tenth day of the month, you shall afflict your souls, and do no work at all, whether a native of your own country or a stranger who dwells among you. 30 For on that day the priest shall make atonement for you, to cleanse you, that you may be clean from all your sins before the Lord. 31 It is a sabbath of solemn rest for you, and you shall afflict your souls. It is a statute forever. 32 And the priest, who is anointed and consecrated to minister as priest in his father’s place, shall make atonement, and put on the linen clothes, the holy garments; 33 then he shall make atonement for the Holy Sanctuary, and he shall make atonement for the tabernacle of meeting and for the altar, and he shall make atonement for the priests and for all the people of the assembly. 34 This shall be an everlasting statute for you, to make atonement for the children of Israel, for all their sins, once a year.” And he did as the Lord comm…” Leviticus 23:26-32 26 And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying: 27 “Also the tenth day of this seventh month shall be the Day of Atonement. It shall be a holy convocation for you; you shall afflict your souls, and offer an offering made by fire to the Lord. 28 And you shall do no work on that same day, for it is the Day of Atonement, to make atonement for you before the Lord your God. 29 For any person who is not afflicted in soul on that same day shall be cut off from his people. 30 And any person who does any work on that same day, that person I will destroy from among his people. 31 You shall do no manner of work; it shall be a statute forever throughout your generations in all your dwellings. 32 It shall be to you a sabbath of solemn rest, and you shall afflict your souls; on the ninth day of the month at evening, from evening to evening, you shall celebrate your sabbath.””
on the day of atonement the entire nation was fasting, together as a national covenant criteria.
    We are in this together,
when we fast after that, that should be to fallow the Holy Spirit.
    to feed the poor.
    to break bondage. Isaiah 58:3-7.
The New King James Version Chapter 58

3 ‘Why have we fasted,’ they say, ‘and You have not seen?

Why have we afflicted our souls, and You take no notice?’

“In fact, in the day of your fast you find pleasure,

    And exploit all your laborers.

4 Indeed you fast for strife and debate,

And to strike with the fist of wickedness.

You will not fast as you do this day,

To make your voice heard on high.

5 Is it a fast that I have chosen,

A day for a man to afflict his soul??

Is it to bow down his head like a bulrush,

And to spread out sackcloth and ashes??

Would you call this a fast,

And an acceptable day to the LORD??

6[ “Is this not the fast that I have chosen:

To loose the bonds of wickedness,

    To undo the heavy burdens,

To let the oppressed go free,

And that you break every yoke?

7 Is it not to share your bread with the hungry,]

    And that you bring to your house the poor who are cast out;

When you see the naked, that you cover him,

And not hide yourself from your own flesh?

8 Then your light shall break forth like the morning,

Your healing shall spring forth speedily,

    And your righteousness shall go before you;

The glory of the LORD shall be your rear guard.

    9 Then you shall call, and the LORD will answer;

You shall cry, and He will say, ‘Here I am.’

    Isaiah 58:7 NKJV
7 Is it not to share your bread with the hungry, And that you bring to your house the poor who are cast out; When you see the naked, that you cover him, And not hide yourself from your own flesh?

    3. Let God who knows your heart see your secret reward you openly.

    Matthew 6:18 NKJV
18 so that you do not appear to men to be fasting, but to your Father who is in the secret place; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you openly.
for the Christian, we don’t do everything to be understood by men.
there are things we do as an out flow of our relationship with God.
often times the things we do out of pure submission to our heavenly father, get rewarded later on.
