John 14:15-17ESV

Seeking God’s Direction for Life

Choosing The Right Guide

John 14:16-27

Big Idea: God has given us both a guidebook and a guide.

John 14:16–17 NIV

And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another advocate to help you and be with you forever—the Spirit of truth. The world cannot accept him, because it neither sees him nor knows him. But you know him, for he lives with you and will be in you.

John 14:25–27 ESV

“These things I have spoken to you while I am still with you. But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you. Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid.

What Does The Holy Spirit Help Me With?

1. The Holy Spirit will help me

John 16:13 The Message

But when the Friend comes, the Spirit of the Truth, he will take you by the hand and guide you into all the truth there is. He won’t draw attention to himself, but will make sense out of what is about to happen and, indeed, out of all that I have done and said.

2. The Holy Spirit will help me

Acts 8:29 ESV

And the Spirit said to Philip, “Go over and join this chariot.”

3. The Holy Spirit will help me

Matthew 10:19–20 NIV

But when they arrest you, do not worry about what to say or how to say it. At that time you will be given what to say, for it will not be you speaking, but the Spirit of your Father speaking through you.

4. The Holy Spirit will help me

5. The Holy Spirit helps me

Galatians 5:17–18 The Message

For there is a root of sinful self-interest in us that is at odds with a free spirit, just as the free spirit is incompatible with selfishness. These two ways of life are antithetical, so that you cannot live at times one way and at times another way according to how you feel on any given day. Why don’t you choose to be led by the Spirit and so escape the erratic compulsions of a law-dominated existence?

How Does the Holy Spirit Guide Me?

1.    The Holy Spirit guides me by                             the                       of Scripture.

1 Corinthians 2:14 NIV

The person without the Spirit does not accept the things that come from the Spirit of God but considers them foolishness, and cannot understand them because they are discerned only through the Spirit.

2.    The Holy Spirit guides me by                            us what He has taught us.

John 14:26 NIV

But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you.

My Next Steps…

1. Pause your activity and consult the map.

Psalm 37:7 NIV

Be still before the Lord and wait patiently for him; do not fret when people succeed in their ways, when they carry out their wicked schemes.

2.                                the Holy Spirit for guidance.

Psalm 25:9 NIV

3.                                                    to the Holy Spirit’s guidance.

John 7:17 NIV

Anyone who chooses to do the will of God will find out whether my teaching comes from God or whether I speak on my own.

4.                                                     the Holy Spirit’s guidance.

James 1:5–6 CSB

Now if any of you lacks wisdom, he should ask God—who gives to all generously and ungrudgingly—and it will be given to him. But let him ask in faith without doubting. For the doubter is like the surging sea, driven and tossed by the wind.
