  • How do you tell someone something they don’t want to hear?

I don’t know if you have one of these moments of going into meet with someone where both of you know what your going to say but no one wants to hear it.
What if somone is doing something they shouldn’t be doing. You need to be heard.
I once had to talk with a lady who was a leader in the church who was involved in an affair. She said she was sorry but wasn’t going to stop.
    Exodus 20:14 HCSB
    Do not commit adultery.
It’s pretty clear but it didn’t matter. She was thrilled with her new relationship.

    Galatians 6:2 HCSB
Carry one another’s burdens; in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ.

Responsibility of believers to each other

The Church has your back. Do you have the Church's front?

Following Jesus means a different way of living

    Holiness in Sexuality
    Ephesians 5:5 HCSB
For know and recognize this: Every sexually immoral or impure or greedy person, who is an idolater, does not have an inheritance in the kingdom of the Messiah and of God.
How can someone’s sexual choices affect the life of the church?
Have you considered how your sexual choices affect the life of your fellow church members?
Turn it around and restate it as a follower
    Malachi 2:10–13 HCSB
Don’t all of us have one Father? Didn’t one God create us? Why then do we act treacherously against one another, profaning the covenant of our fathers? Judah has acted treacherously, and a detestable thing has been done in Israel and in Jerusalem. For Judah has profaned the Lord’s sanctuary, which He loves, and has married the daughter of a foreign god. To the man who does this, may the Lord cut off any descendants from the tents of Jacob, even if they present an offering to the Lord of Hosts. And this is another thing you do: you cover the Lord’s altar with tears, with weeping and groaning, because He no longer respects your offerings or receives them gladly from your hands.
Jewish people had a higher standard. They were forbidden from marrying people of other another race unless their was conversion.
    Deuteronomy 7:3–4 HCSB
Do not intermarry with them. Do not give your daughters to their sons or take their daughters for your sons, because they will turn your sons away from Me to worship other gods. Then the Lord’s anger will burn against you, and He will swiftly destroy you.
Jewish people were forbidden from marrying people of other another race unless their was conversion.
Man who married the Mormon woman. Another man who married a catholic wife.
In Malachi the Priests were doing it too.
Would be horrified if their child married a person of a different political party.

Who we commit to has consequences for our lives.

    2 Corinthians 6:14–17 The Message
Don’t become partners with those who reject God. How can you make a partnership out of right and wrong? That’s not partnership; that’s war. Is light best friends with dark? Does Christ go strolling with the Devil? Do trust and mistrust hold hands? Who would think of setting up pagan idols in God’s holy Temple? But that is exactly what we are, each of us a temple in whom God lives. God himself put it this way: “I’ll live in them, move into them; I’ll be their God and they’ll be my people. So leave the corruption and compromise; leave it for good,” says God. “Don’t link up with those who will pollute you. I want you all for myself.
    2 Cor 6:14-
The Jews were to be a seperate people. Their priests even more seperate
A follower of Jesus is not to be unequally yoked.
A follower of Jesus is not to be unequally yoked.
    But what about Love?
God tells us to love one another. He doesn’t limit that love but he doesn’t tell us to have sex with one another and He doesn’t tells us to marry one another.
We are ruining love by thinking we have to have sex with everyone we love.
Judaism gave the world an understanding of sexual purity of hedrosexual sex.
    Chrisitianiity continued pushing monogamy.

Believers are a Holy (Set-Apart) Priesthood. Do you look different?

They developed around a world power that didn’t have those sex rules.
Greeks argued about whether you could have sex with your sisters if you were step children and then only if it was not from the same father, while others say the mother.
Egyptians said there is no such forbiddeness and even stated twins had sexual love for each other.
We humans have no natural bounds to our sexuality.
Does God restrict whom we can have sexual relationships with?

Your faith is a choice to follow Jesus with your whole life including who you choose to have sex with.

The Jewish people rejected God’s covenant so He rejected them.
    Malachi 2:12 HCSB
To the man who does this, may the Lord cut off any descendants from the tents of Jacob, even if they present an offering to the Lord of Hosts.
    Malachi 2 HCSB
“Therefore, this decree is for you priests: If you don’t listen, and if you don’t take it to heart to honor My name,” says Yahweh of Hosts, “I will send a curse among you, and I will curse your blessings. In fact, I have already begun to curse them because you are not taking it to heart. “Look, I am going to rebuke your descendants, and I will spread animal waste over your faces, the waste from your festival sacrifices, and you will be taken away with it. Then you will know that I sent you this decree so My covenant with Levi may continue,” says the Lord of Hosts. “My covenant with him was one of life and peace, and I gave these to him; it called for reverence, and he revered Me and stood in awe of My name. True instruction was in his mouth, and nothing wrong was found on his lips. He walked with Me in peace and fairness and turned many from sin. For the lips of a priest should guard knowledge, and people should seek instruction from his mouth, because he is the messenger of the Lord of Hosts. “You, on the other hand, have turned from the way. You have caused many to stumble by your instruction. You have violated the covenant of Levi,” says the Lord of Hosts. “So I in turn have made you despised and humiliated before all the people because you are not keeping My ways but are showing partiality in your instruction.” Don’t all of us have one Father? Yet you ask, “For what reason?” Because the Lord has been a witness between you and the wife of your youth. You have acted treacherously against her, though she was your marriage partner and your wife by covenant. Didn’t the one God make us with a remnant of His life-breath? And what does the One seek? A godly offspring. So watch yourselves carefully, and do not act treacherously against the wife of your youth. “If he hates and divorces his wife, ” says the Lord God of Israel, “he covers his garment with injustice,” says the Lord of Hosts. Therefore, watch yourselves carefully, and do not act treacherously. You have wearied the Lord with your words. Yet you ask, “How have we wearied Him?” When you say, “Everyone who does what is evil is good in the Lord’s sight, and He is pleased with them,” or “Where is the God of justice?”
    Malachi 2:13 HCSB
And this is another thing you do: you cover the Lord’s altar with tears, with weeping and groaning, because He no longer respects your offerings or receives them gladly from your hands.
They would give and give and give but God wasn’t blessing.
Like a person who tells me that they gave their life to Jesus, praying and even giving to God but their life is still going to hell
    Proverbs 21:3 HCSB
Doing what is righteous and just is more acceptable to the Lord than sacrifice.

Don’t blame God as we live out the consequences of our sin

Justice and Mercy rather than sacrifice
Blaming God as we live out the consequences of our sin
    (moral verses)
A student who doesn’t study doesn’t pass. An athlete that doesn’t practice gets beat.

A follower of Jesus that doesn’t follow doesn’t catch up to the blessings.

    Proverbs 5:18–19 HCSB
Let your fountain be blessed, and take pleasure in the wife of your youth. A loving doe, a graceful fawn— let her breasts always satisfy you; be lost in her love forever.
    Prov 5:18-

Our sexuality is a practice of our commitment to Christ
    Malachi 2:13–14 HCSB
And this is another thing you do: you cover the Lord’s altar with tears, with weeping and groaning, because He no longer respects your offerings or receives them gladly from your hands. Yet you ask, “For what reason?” Because the Lord has been a witness between you and the wife of your youth. You have acted treacherously against her, though she was your marriage partner and your wife by covenant.
    (pauline seperate verses)
Priests were divorcing their wives as they aged.
Men would get married young. Between 13 and 20.
    Only Men could divorce
While polygamy was legal it was frowned on
They may have thought they were being good in their serial monogamy
    Malachi 2:15–16 HCSB
Didn’t the one God make us with a remnant of His life-breath? And what does the One seek? A godly offspring. So watch yourselves carefully, and do not act treacherously against the wife of your youth. “If he hates and divorces his wife, ” says the Lord God of Israel, “he covers his garment with injustice,” says the Lord of Hosts. Therefore, watch yourselves carefully, and do not act treacherously.
    Malachi 3:1 HCSB
“See, I am going to send My messenger, and he will clear the way before Me. Then the Lord you seek will suddenly come to His temple, the Messenger of the covenant you desire—see, He is coming,” says the Lord of Hosts.
    Malachi 2:16 HCSB
“If he hates and divorces his wife, ” says the Lord God of Israel, “he covers his garment with injustice,” says the Lord of Hosts. Therefore, watch yourselves carefully, and do not act treacherously.
    :!6
God hates divorce. He loves covenant and promise. Here his daughters were getting married off properly and then as they aged were getting let go, sent back to their families, so the men would marry another.
Divorce has skyrocketed in our country and now marriage ceremony has turned into a display of wealth. Sexual commitment occurs when people move in together and moving out is the new divorce. in some school districts the majority of incoming kindergartners are enrolled by unmarried woman.
So what. That is the culture. And I don’t pastor our culture. I am speaking to you.
    Romans 12:1–2 HCSB
Therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, I urge you to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God; this is your spiritual worship. Do not be conformed to this age, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may discern what is the good, pleasing, and perfect will of God.

You and I are to be different from our culture.

stop judging the world, and start repenting from your own life.

Our sexuality is a practice of our commitment to Christ

Virginity is not the same thing as sexuality. There is no soiled woman, no trashed man, no one passed the point of Christ’s redemption. I don’t care if you can’t remember how many sexual partners you’ve had, how many exs you have. Remember this.
How is sexuality a practice of our commitment to Christ?
God chose the prophet Hosea He told him to marry a prostitute because that is how people treated God. Through the birth of his Hosea’s children God told the world that He would chose you.
    Romans 9:24–26 The Message
Either or both happens to Jews, but it also happens to the other people. Hosea put it well: I’ll call nobodies and make them somebodies; I’ll call the unloved and make them beloved. In the place where they yelled out, “You’re nobody!” they’re calling you “God’s living children.”
    Romans 9:2
God is making old things new. He is creating new life where there was only destruction. Holiness where there was only disgust.
Will you repent? With actual repentance.
What does repentance look like in terms of sexuality?
By the way, that woman did. Most of them have. And now live a life of joy accomplishing more than they ever thought possible as they follow Christ.

    Boldly Love.

Our sexual choices reveal our faith

    Malachi 3:13 HCSB
“Your words against Me are harsh,” says the Lord. Yet you ask: “What have we spoken against You?”
While polygamy was legal it was frowned on

    Sorry is not repentance

    God hates divorces
The purpose of a marriage is to produce Godly offspring
    (I desire mercy not sacrifice
What’s sad is the story I told about the woman, while specific has been repeated so many times that my own wife doesn’t recognize who I am talking about
We in the church have sex but only after we have known them a while.
    Move in
    Divorce
    Never marry

Pain is real and so is Forgiveness

There is a real cost to sin
