  • From Generation To Generation

    Matthew 1 TPT
1 This is the scroll of the lineage and birth of Jesus, the Anointed One, the son of David and descendant of Abraham. 2 Abraham had a son named Isaac, who had a son named Jacob, who had a son named Judah (he and his brothers became the tribes of Israel). 3 Judah and Tamar had twin sons, Perez and Zerah. Perez had a son named Hezron, who had a son named Ram, 4 who had a son named Amminadab, who had a son named Nashon, 5 who had a son named Salmon, who, along with Rahab, had a son named Boaz. Boaz and Ruth had a son named Obed, who was the father of Jesse, 6 and Jesse had a son named David, who became the king. 7 Then David and Bathsheba had a son named Solomon, who had a son named Rehoboam, who had a son named Abijah, who had a son named Asa, 8 who had a son named Jehoshaphat, who had a son named Joram, who had a son named Uzziah, 9 who had a son named Jotham, who had a son named Ahaz, who had a son named Hezekiah, 10 who had a son named Manasseh, who had a son named Amos, who had a son named Josiah, 11 who was the father of Jeconiah. It was during the days of Jeconiah and his brothers that Israel was taken captive and deported to Babylon. 12 About the time of their captivity in Babylon, Jeconiah had a son named Shealtiel, who had a son named Zerubbabel, 13 who had a son named Abiud, who had a son named Eliakim, 14 who had a son named Azor, who had a son named Zadok, who had a son named Achim, who had a son named Eliud, 15 who had a son named Eleazar, who had a son named Matthan, who had a son named Jacob, 16 who was the father of Joseph, the husband of Mary the mother of Jesus, who is called “the Anointed One.” 17 So from Abraham to David were fourteen generations, and from David to the Babylonian captivity, fourteen generation, and from the Babylonian captivity to Christ, fourteen generations. 18 This was how Jesus, God’s Anointed One, was born. His mother, Mary, had promised Joseph to be his wife, but while she was still a virgin she became pregnant through the power of the Holy Spirit. 19 Her fiancé, Joseph, was a righteous man full of integrity and he didn’t want to disgrace her, but when he learned of her pregnancy he secretly planned to break the engagement. 20 While he was still debating with himself about what to do, he fell asleep and had a supernatural dream. An angel from the Lord appeared to him in clear light and said, “Joseph, descendant of David, don’t hesitate to take Mary into your home as your wife, because the power of the Holy Spirit has conceived a child in her womb. 21 She will give birth to a son and you are to name him ‘Savior,’ for he is destined to give his life to save his people from their sins.” 22 This happened so that what the Lord spoke through his prophet would come true: 23 Listen! A virgin will be pregnant, she will give birth to a Son, and he will be known as “Emmanuel,” which means in Hebrew, “God became one of us.” 24 When Joseph awoke from his dream, he did all that the angel of the Lord instructed him to do. He took Mary to be his wife, 25 but they refrained from having sex until she gave birth to her son, whom they named “Jesus.”

    From Generation To Generation

The Anchor Yale Bible Dictionary Mary, Mother of Jesus

Matthew identifies Jesus as “Christ, the Son of David, the Son of Abraham” (1:1) in an unusual genealogy (1:1–17) which includes names of four women,

What really grabbed my attention with this
1.) These 4 women are the only females mentioned in his genealogy for the exception of Mother Mary.
2.) All 4 grandmothers are connected to a family scandal. Which should make all us comfortable in Knowing if Jesus had scandals in his family we don’t have nothing to be embarrased about. (FYI: Women can’t have to many scandals without men)
    Tamar: the Canaanite woman
In Genesis 38, she married to Er, Judah’s first son by the Canaanite daughter of Shua. After Er was slain for his wickedness by God, Judah asked his next son Onan to perform the task of marriage with Tamar. Onan, however, attempted to avoid issue with her by practicing coitus interruptus, and for this he too was killed by God. When Judah tried to save his last son Shelah by delaying giving Tamar to him, she took matters into her own hands. Disguising herself as a prostitute, she had relations with Judah. When he discovered her pregnancy and his own role in it, Judah declared her to be more righteous than he since he had withheld Shelah from her. She bore twin sons, Perez and Zerah and through Perez was an ancestress of David
    2. Rahab: The Harlot
Joshua 2, She ran her business on the wall of Jericho along with caring for her family. When the two spies came to Jericho, She protected them, and they made a covenant that when the Children of Israel would arrive to take the land, She would leave the scarlet rope draped out the window and they would spare everyone that was in the house. Rahab and her whole family were preserved according to the promise of the spies, and were incorporated among the Jewish people. She afterwards became the wife of Salmon, a prince of the tribe of Judah
    3.) Ruth—a Moabitess
The wife of Mahlon, whose father, Elimelech, had settled in the land of Moab. On the death of Elimelech and Mahlon, Naomi came with Ruth, her daughter-in-law, who refused to leave her, to Bethlehem, the old home from which Elimelech had migrated. There she had a rich relative, Boaz, to whom Ruth was eventually married. She became the mother of Obed, the grandfather of David. Thus Ruth, a Gentile, is among the maternal progenitors of our Lord
4.) Bath-Sheba: wife of Uriah the Hittite.
David committed adultery with her (2 Sam. 11:45Ps. 51:1). The child born in adultery died (2 Sam. 12:15–19). After her husband was slain (11:15) she was married to David (11:27), and became the mother of Solomon (12:24; 1 Kings 1:112:13). She took a prominent part in securing the succession of Solomon to the throne.
5.) Mary the Mother Of Jesus
    Luke 1:24–41 TPT
24 Soon afterward his wife, Elizabeth, became pregnant and went into seclusion for the next five months. 25 She said with joy, “See how kind it is of God to gaze upon me and take away the disgrace of my barrenness!” 26 During the sixth month of Elizabeth’s pregnancy, the angel Gabriel was sent from God’s presence to an unmarried girl named Mary, living in Nazareth, a village in Galilee. She was engaged to a man named Joseph, a true descendant of King David. 28 Gabriel appeared to her and said, “Grace to you, young woman, for the Lord is with you and so you are anointed with great favor.” 29 Mary was deeply troubled over the words of the angel and bewildered over what this may mean for her. 30 But the angel reassured her, saying, “Do not yield to your fear, Mary, for the Lord has found delight in you and has chosen to surprise you with a wonderful gift. 31 You will become pregnant with a baby boy, and you are to name him Jesus. 32 He will be supreme and will be known as the Son of the Highest. And the Lord God will enthrone him as King on his ancestor David’s throne. 33 He will reign as King of Israel forever, and his reign will have no limit.” 34 Mary said, “But how could this happen? I am still a virgin!” 35 Gabriel answered, “The Spirit of Holiness will fall upon you and almighty God will spread his shadow of power over you in a cloud of glory! This is why the child born to you will be holy, and he will be called the Son of God. 36 What’s more, your aged aunt, Elizabeth, has also become pregnant with a son. The ‘barren one’ is now in her sixth month. 37 Not one promise from God is empty of power, for nothing is impossible with God!” 38 Then Mary responded, saying, “This is amazing! I will be a mother for the Lord! As his servant, I accept whatever he has for me. May everything you have told me come to pass.” And the angel left her. 39 Afterward, Mary arose and hurried off to the hill country of Judea, to the village where Zechariah and Elizabeth lived. 40 Arriving at their home, Mary entered the house and greeted Elizabeth. 41 At the moment she heard Mary’s voice, the baby within Elizabeth’s womb jumped and kicked. And suddenly, Elizabeth was filled to overflowing with the Holy Spirit!
I think it’s safe to say we probably have learned more about these women in the bible than we have concerning Joseph.
    Luke 1:28 KJV
28 And the angel came in unto her, and said, Hail, thou that art highly favoured, the Lord is with thee: blessed art thou among women.
So the first thing that happens is Dialogue with Gabriel and Mary.
Mary becomes Pregnant by the Holy Spirit
And Then Gabriel Shifts his attention to Joseph, and we never read that the angel spoke with Mary again, from that moment all contact/conversation concerning Jesus was with Joseph.
    2nd Thing:
    Matthew 1:19–20 NIV
19 Because Joseph her husband was faithful to the law, and yet did not want to expose her to public disgrace, he had in mind to divorce her quietly. 20 But after he had considered this, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, “Joseph son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary home as your wife, because what is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit.
The Prophesy of the Coming Messiah was he would be born of a virgin and he would be from the tribe of David.
Mary was responsible for the Virgin part.
Joseph was responsible for the David part.
Now Why is this important to Us as families?
This is the best blue print to use for your family.
    Y’all ready…
Most Christians never paid attention to Joseph and his role as the head of his house hold.
I’ve have been saved for 30 years and don’t remember any sermons geared towards Joseph..
Keeping Joseph connection to King David a secret, makes everyone assume it was Mary’s bloodline. (Not)
This shows how important Joseph was to Jesus
This also shows Mothers who marry men who aren’t there children’s earthly father but they are the father, God designed to raise them under the banner of there last name.
It’s the power of the husbands last name..
    Joseph was a righteous man:
Attributes ascribed to individuals who live according to divine law, emphasizing moral purity and alignment with God's will.
He had a relationship with God, and the Lord spoke to him in dreams. He Told Joseph when to leave, where to go and when to return. Remember: this is The Word of Wisdom
    2. Joseph was never insecure with Jesus relationship with God, he knew his role.
Men that have a relationship with God don’t struggle with insecurities with their wife, Kids and other men. (because we know who we are)
    4. Joseph was a Protector:
    5. Joseph was a legacy builder
It took 42 Generations for the Massiah’s prophecy to manifest.

    From Generation To Generation

    Matthew 13:55–56 KJV
55 Is not this the carpenter’s son? is not his mother called Mary? and his brethren, James, and Joses, and Simon, and Judas? 56 And his sisters, are they not all with us? Whence then hath this man all these things?
Notice that Jesus was always known by his earthly father and his trade, & not known by having a step father
He had siblings not step brothers and step sisters
It’s most likely that when Joseph married Mary who was around 13-15 years old Joe was around 25-40 years old and had been married and his first wife had passed. Giving him the liberty to remarry. (and its possible that Mary give birth to all those Kids and Joseph was never married to another women.) (The dynamics of Jesus and his siblings will be another discussion at another series)
2.Notice That! Once Mary encountered Gabriel in Luke chapter One and conceived in her womb Jesus. That Gabriel’s conversation shifted from Mary to Joseph.
Mary was able to trust Joseph to lead their family as the Husband/Earthly father. She never questioned his decisions when God spoke to him. As wife/mother she demonstrated what wife/mothers should do when God gives you a Joseph.
It’s also important to consider when the wife is saved and filled with the Holy Ghost and the Husband isn’t, this doesn’t disqualify him as the head.
But its hard to Lead a family when God isn’t leading you
Please Note: Mary was of the tribe of Levy/Aaron and Joseph was of the tribe of Judah/David.
The prophecy concerning the Messiah was he would be born from a virgin from the tribe of Jessie/David. Joseph’s part in the prophecy was very important. (Mary & Jesus had the banner of Joseph’s last name)
Do know how many mothers/wives who married a man that could have covered her child under the banner of his name. But the mother made it clear that she didn’t want him to be his earthly father.
When a family unit’s uses words like My kids, My house, My money, your father etc. You are in trouble
All you single Sisters: You might be praying for your future husband to be a tall glass of water.. You Might also want to pray.. He have
Joeseph Characteristics: Covenant Covering, Provider & Protector & One who hears the Lords Voice & obeys
After the story of Jesus being 12 and was chastised by his parents for wondering off, Joseph fades out of the history of Jesus life.
Joseph was never in competition with God concerning Jesus, he knew what his role was. ( ask a brother next to you do you know your role?)
    Proverbs 13:22 KJV
22 A good man leaveth an inheritance to his children’s children: and the wealth of the sinner is laid up for the just.
