In biblical times, people would mainly run into battle and threats of danger. Today, we mostly run for competitive races and to maintain our health. Despite this difference, we can still find inspiration from scripture when seeking motivation to run - whether literally or figuratively the race of life. 1 Corinthians 9:24-27

Paul said to run to win as if winning is everything. It is, but not in the sense that you find in the sports arena. Running to win only makes sense if you’re chasing the right prize.

24 Do you not know that in a race all the runners run, but only one receives the prize? So run that you may obtain it. 25 Every athlete exercises self-control in all things. They do it to receive a perishable wreath, but we an imperishable. 26 So I do not run aimlessly; I do not box as one beating the air. 27 But I discipline my body and keep it under control,[a] lest after preaching to others I myself should be disqualified.

My daughter, Jen, has a fur ball with whiskers named Fred. Fred will chase anything that moves. If you have one of those little laser lights that shines a red dot on the wall you can keep Fred occupied for months! He chases the red dot, jumping in any direction you choose. I saw him go three-quarters of the way up the living room wall with fire in his eyes over that little red dot.

Now Fred is jumping and running to win, but he’s chasing an empty prize; every time he gets his paws on it, he’s got nothing! A lot of people are like Fred, chasing after things, money and the next dazzling light that comes along…empty!

My wife and I watched as Danny, our youngest son, competed in the Carnival of Champions back when he was in elementary school. He was entered in the half-mile race. It was two laps around the track.
When the starting gun sounded, he quickly leaped ahead of everyone and built a sizable lead. He had never run the half-mile before. By the time he completed the first lap, he was already a half of a lap ahead of the other runners. I kept watching and hoping that he could keep it up. I had never seen him run like that before.
When Danny was about halfway around the final lap, I noticed that he was slowing down considerably. I knew that if he could just see the finish line, he would finish well. He just needed to get around the final curve.
The other runners were steadily gaining on him. When Danny only had about 110 yards to go, one of the runners caught him. At that point, Danny could have looked forward and seen the finish line. It was within reach. But he only saw the other runner that was passing him. He never got the extra shot of adrenaline he needed to win the race.
Sometimes we take our eyes off the goal at the very moment we need it most. Hebrews 12:2 tells us to fix our eyes on Jesus, the author, and perfecter of our faith. Let’s keep our eyes on Jesus so we can finish well.
