    What Is Excellence? The Biblical Formula for Excellence
    Introduction: As Christians, we are called to be the light of the world, and to do that, we must strive for excellence in all that we do. We must aim to be the best versions of ourselves, honor God with our actions, and bring glory to His name. Today, we will look at four points that will help us to strive for excellence.

    What Is Excellence
    You want to be excellent. The pursuit of excellence in the workplace and life is something I think we all want. I doubt there are too many people out there that only desire to be average or worse. Everyone wants to be the best at what they do. That’s a natural desire. However, that’s not a reality for many of us. Excellence is elusive. One reason is that it’s not clearly defined. Webster gives us a vague idea, with its definition.
    Excellence – An excellent (good) or valuable quality related to virtue.

    What Does the Bible Say Is Excellence?
    I think we all knew that excellence was something good. The Bible mentions excellence and excellent people all throughout. Joseph, David, Daniel, John the Baptist, and Jesus are just a few of the obvious examples. However, there is one story in the Bible that stands out to me as an example of someone being found excellent and being rewarded. The story doesn’t have a happy ending and the very things that cause this man to receive praise might be his downfall. It’s a story not unlike Saul that is almost forgettable, except for this one line in scripture.

    However, for now, let’s look at what Jeroboam can teach us about excellence and we can review his story in more detail later.

    When we look at this passage and the rest of his story, we find that Jeroboam has some distinct qualities.
    1. He was “very capable” which in other translations point to Jeroboam being a powerful warrior.
    2. He was also industrious.

    These two traits caught Solomon’s eye and Solomon put him in charge of his forced labor. Likewise, Jeroboam’s excellence was seen from Heaven. When Solomon began to pursue other gods, Jeroboam was anointed as a king.
    Excellence = Responsibility + Industriousness

    In Israel, at that time every young man would have served in the military. This is more than a line about how many enemies Jeroboam defeated. To be considered a powerful warrior, you would have had to serve well by being submitted to authority and making decisions that were in line with the will of the commander. In other words, you had to have the characteristics of a kingdom leader.

    In order to be noticed, he would have had to do all of this and rise through the ranks as a leader. Before you dismiss this part because you don’t see yourself as a leader, hold on. As the son of a widow, Jeroboam likely had to take responsibility at a young age. Normally the loss of a father would set back a man. It has for many today. However, it was this circumstance that likely led to him being excellent. It’s never the loss that empowers, it’s the responsibility for oneself that does. Leadership might be influenced according to John Maxwell, but it starts with responsibility for yourself and for others.

    Point 1: Set Goals

    Explanation: To strive for excellence, we must have a goal and work hard to achieve it. We cannot sit back and wait for success to come to us. We must chase it with all our might, and trust that God will be with us every step of the way. So, set goals, and work hard to achieve them.
    Punto 1: Establecer metas

    Industriousness
    If you look up the definition for industrious it describes someone always active. I really like this word over other labels, such as “task-oriented.” Have you ever met a person that can’t seem to sit still? They need to be doing something like this. The most famous of these industrious people might be Martha. When Jesus visits, she’s busy doing household chores and getting the place ready while her sister is just sitting there at Jesus’ feet. Most of us know this story and know people like this. I’m very guilty of this one in particular. I always want to be doing things and accomplishing things.
    Laboriosidad

    Another way to look at industriousness is that it’s the opposite of doing nothing. In other words, it’s taking action. You can see why taking action and having responsibility is a powerful combination. Essentially it means doing what needs to be done. When you work at completing tasks alone, you feel busy but you’re not excellent. It’s only with the responsibility added in that you are able to achieve excellence.
    Otra forma de ver la laboriosidad es que es lo opuesto a no hacer nada. En otras palabras, está tomando medidas.     Point 2: Give Your Best
    Scripture: Ecclesiastes 9:10 - "Whatever your hand finds to do, do it with all your might."

    Explanation: We must put our heart and soul into everything we do, whether it's our work, our relationships, or our spiritual growth. We must not be content with mediocrity or half-hearted efforts. Instead, we must give our best in all that we do, knowing that we are doing it for God's glory.
    Punto 2: Da lo mejor de ti

    Búsqueda de la excelencia

    The Bible charges us with the pursuit of excellence. We’ve already covered that excellence is Responsibility + Action or Industriousness. There is one other aspect of excellence that is often missed but was not missed by Solomon (or God). Essentially, the pursuit of excellence is being faithful to the little things. Little things matter. When you go from leading an army to an army of forced labor on big projects, details count.
    La Biblia nos encarga la búsqueda de la excelencia. Ya hemos cubierto que la excelencia es Responsabilidad + Acción o Laboriosidad.     The next time you want to pursue excellence ask yourself, am I being responsible, am I taking action and am I paying attention to the details? If you are, chances are good you are excellent!
    Point 3: Work for the Lord

    Scripture: Colossians 3:23-24 - "Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters, since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward."

    23 Work willingly at whatever you do, as though you were working for the Lord rather than for people. 24 Remember that the Lord will give you an inheritance as your reward, and that the Master you are serving is Christ.

    Explanation: Our ultimate reward is not earthly success, but a heavenly one. We must work hard and strive for excellence, not for the sake of our own ego or material gain, but for the glory of God. We must work as if we are working for the Lord, and not for human masters.
    Punto 3: Trabajar para el Señor

    Excellence is the quality of excelling, of being the very best at something. Human beings have an intrinsic desire to see excellence. In every people group across the world, excellence is prized and rewarded. Whether it is a tribe celebrating excellence in hunting or a Wall Street accountant promoted because of his excellence in finance, our appreciation of excellence comes from our Creator.
    La excelencia es la cualidad de sobresalir, de ser el mejor en algo. Los seres humanos tienen un deseo intrínseco de ver la excelencia. En cada grupo de personas en todo el mundo, la excelencia es apreciada y recompensada.     1. To be made in God’s image means that He imparted some of His character qualities to us (Genesis 1:27).
    2. We crave justice because He is just (Psalm 9:16).
    3. We love because He is love (1 John 4:16).
    4. And we strive for excellence because He is excellent in everything He does (Deuteronomy 32:4).

    Many things get in the way of human excellence, including apathy, carelessness, and laziness. Our sinful nature is that part of us that is unlike God and is in fact in opposition to God and His excellence. We are all born sinners, and that sin manifests itself in a thousand ways. We cut corners, we shirk, and we settle for second best (or third or fourth best) if the effort to achieve excellence is more than we’re willing to give. God’s cure for our careless ways is to remind us that He is our ultimate judge. We must answer to Him for how we spend our time, our resources, and our energy (Matthew 12:36; 1 Corinthians 3:13–15). Striving for excellence should be a part of all we do: “Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters, since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward. It is the Lord Christ you are serving” (Colossians 3:23–24).
    Muchas cosas se interponen en el camino de la excelencia humana, incluyendo la apatía, el descuido y la pereza.     Aware that it is Christ Himself we are serving, we don’t want to present Him with anything but excellence. Whether it is sweeping streets or running a country, we should strive for excellence in work ethic, in character, and in craftsmanship. No one is good at everything, but we’re all good at something. God expects us to develop the skills and gifts He’s given us in order to serve Him and others better. Paul addressed the subject of excellence in Romans 12:6–8: “We have different gifts, according to the grace given to each of us. If your gift is prophesying, then prophesy in accordance with your faith; if it is serving, then serve; if it is teaching, then teach; if it is to encourage, then give encouragement; if it is giving, then give generously; if it is to lead, do it diligently; if it is to show mercy, do it cheerfully.” In other words, find your gifts and use them with excellence.
    Conscientes de que es a Cristo mismo a quien estamos sirviendo, no queremos presentarle nada más que excelencia. Ya sea barriendo calles o dirigiendo un país, debemos esforzarnos por la excelencia en la ética de trabajo, en el carácter y en la artesanía. Nadie es bueno en todo, pero todos somos buenos en algo.     Joseph is an example of a young man who did his best at everything he was given to do. Even when Joseph was unjustly imprisoned, he was able to impress the warden with his excellent character and work ethic (Genesis 39:1–2, 20–23). Because of his commitment to excellence and God’s hand upon him, Joseph rose to power in a nation that had once enslaved him.
    José es un ejemplo de un joven que hizo todo lo posible en todo lo que se le dio para hacer.     Point 4: Learn from Mistakes

    Scripture: Proverbs 24:16 - "For though the righteous fall seven times, they rise again, but the wicked stumble when calamity strikes."

    16 The godly may trip seven times, but they will get up again. But one disaster is enough to overthrow the wicked.

    Explanation: We will make mistakes along the way, but we must learn from them and rise again. We must not be discouraged by our failures, but we must keep striving for excellence. God is with us, and He will help us overcome our mistakes.

    Conclusion: To strive for excellence is to honor God with our actions and bring glory to His name. Let us set goals, give our best, work for the Lord, and learn from our mistakes. May God help us to strive for excellence in all that we do.
    Punto 4: Aprender de los errores

    Escritura: Proverbios 24:16 - "Porque aunque los justos caen siete veces, resucitan, pero los impíos tropiezan cuando la calamidad golpea".

    God does not promise to bless and help the lazy; rather, He has words to prod them to action (Proverbs 6:6–11; 10:4).
    But God is pleased with the diligent (Proverbs 10:3–4; 13:4;).
    Since God gives us His best in every way, we owe it to our Creator to pursue excellence in everything He’s given us to do (Ecclesiastes 9:10).
