  • 1 Thessalonians 4:1–2 NKJV
    1 Finally then, brethren, we urge and exhort in the Lord Jesus that you should abound more and more, just as you received from us how you ought to walk and to please God; 2 for you know what commandments we gave you through the Lord Jesus.
    1 Thessalonians 4:7–8 NKJV
    7 For God did not call us to uncleanness, but in holiness. 8 Therefore he who rejects this does not reject man, but God, who has also given us His Holy Spirit.
    1 Thessalonians 4:11–12 NKJV
    11 that you also aspire to lead a quiet life, to mind your own business, and to work with your own hands, as we commanded you, 12 that you may walk properly toward those who are outside, and that you may lack nothing.

    To live a life worthy of God goes beyond Faith

    This church had a reputation

    1 Thessalonians 1:3 NKJV
    3 remembering without ceasing your work of faith, labor of love, and patience of hope in our Lord Jesus Christ in the sight of our God and Father,
    A reputation marked by
    ++Faith
    ++Love
    ++Patience

    They were followers of God

    1 Thessalonians 1:6 NKJV
    6 And you became followers of us and of the Lord, having received the word in much affliction, with joy of the Holy Spirit,

    They recieved the word of God

    1 Thessalonians 2:13 NKJV
    13 For this reason we also thank God without ceasing, because when you received the word of God which you heard from us, you welcomed it not as the word of men, but as it is in truth, the word of God, which also effectively works in you who believe.

    How did they know it was God’s word and not His own?

    Paul’s life demonstrated his faith and trust in God.

    1 Thessalonians 2:9 NKJV
    9 For you remember, brethren, our labor and toil; for laboring night and day, that we might not be a burden to any of you, we preached to you the gospel of God.
    Paul was not
    ++A motivational speaker
    ++A content creator

    Paul knew the Power of the Gospel

    Romans 1:16 NKJV
    16 For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ, for it is the power of God to salvation for everyone who believes, for the Jew first and also for the Greek.
    He came
    ++To declare the Gospel Message
    ++To demonstrate its power
    ++To build a people of faith

    Paul connected to their weakness

    1 Corinthians 2:3–5 NKJV
    3 I was with you in weakness, in fear, and in much trembling. 4 And my speech and my preaching were not with persuasive words of human wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power, 5 that your faith should not be in the wisdom of men but in the power of God.

    They saw Paul as one of them

    2 Corinthians 12:6 NKJV
    6 For though I might desire to boast, I will not be a fool; for I will speak the truth. But I refrain, lest anyone should think of me above what he sees me to be or hears from
    2 Corinthians 12:9 NKJV
    9 And He said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for My strength is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore most gladly I will rather boast in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me.

    The Word came with joy of the Holy Spirit

    How does the word of God effect you?

    Does it bring you _joy_?
    2 Timothy 4:2–3 NKJV
    2 Preach the word! Be ready in season and out of season. Convince, rebuke, exhort, with all longsuffering and teaching. 3 For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine, but according to their own desires, because they have itching ears, they will heap up for themselves teachers;
    Why would something joyous be avoided?
    Romans 7:9 NKJV
    9 I was alive once without the law, but when the commandment came, sin revived and I died.
    Paul said that before the law
    ++I was alive
    ++Sin was not revealed
    When the Commandment came
    ++Sin was awakened
    ++I died
    The Word of God reveals
    ++God’s law
    ++God’s Commandments
    ++God’s statutes
    ++Man’s brokenness
    Romans 3:10 NKJV
    10 As it is written: “There is none righteous, no, not one;
    Romans 3:19–20 NKJV
    19 Now we know that whatever the law says, it says to those who are under the law, that every mouth may be stopped, and all the world may become guilty before God. 20 Therefore by the deeds of the law no flesh will be justified in His sight, for by the law is the knowledge of sin.
    The purpose of the Law
    ++Is not to fix us
    ++Is not to redeem us
    ++Is not to make us right
    ++Tells us how bad we need a savior
    This is the message of the Gospel
    2 Corinthians 5:17 NKJV
    17 Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new.
    God word will challenge us
    ++To embracing sexual purity
    ++To walk in love
    ++To live responsibly
    ++To be like Him
    We are commanded to be Holy by
    Pursuing Pleasing God
    1 Thessalonians 4:1–3 NKJV
    1 Finally then, brethren, we urge and exhort in the Lord Jesus that you should abound more and more, just as you received from us how you ought to walk and to please God; 2 for you know what commandments we gave you through the Lord Jesus. 3 For this is the will of God, your sanctification: that you should abstain from sexual immorality;
    We are commanded to be Holy by
    Pursuing Pleasing God
    Practicing Personal Purity
    1 Thessalonians 4:4–5 NKJV
    4 that each of you should know how to possess his own vessel in sanctification and honor, 5 not in passion of lust, like the Gentiles who do not know God;
    Sexual purity as an integral part of holiness.
    We are commanded to be Holy by
    Pursuing Pleasing God
    Practicing Personal Purity
    Perceiving God’s Purpose
    1 Thessalonians 4:7–8 NKJV
    7 For God did not call us to uncleanness, but in holiness. 8 Therefore he who rejects this does not reject man, but God, who has also given us His Holy Spirit.
    Our calling to holiness is
    ++Rooted in God's purpose
    ++Reveals our relationship to Him
