1 Timothy 2:1–15 ESV First of all, then, I urge that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivings be made for all people, for kings and all who are in high positions, that we may lead a peaceful and quiet life, godly and dignified in every way. This is good, and it is pleasing in the sight of God our Savior, who desires all people to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth. For there is one God, and there is one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus, who gave himself as a ransom for all, which is the testimony given at the proper time. For this I was appointed a preacher and an apostle (I am telling the truth, I am not lying), a teacher of the Gentiles in faith and truth. I desire then that in every place the men should pray, lifting holy hands without anger or quarreling; likewise also that women should adorn themselves in respectable apparel, with modesty and self-control, not with braided hair and gold or pearls or costly attire, but with what is proper for women who profess godliness—with good works. Let a woman learn quietly with all submissiveness. I do not permit a woman to teach or to exercise authority over a man; rather, she is to remain quiet. For Adam was formed first, then Eve; and Adam was not deceived, but the woman was deceived and became a transgressor. Yet she will be saved through childbearing—if they continue in faith and love and holiness, with self-control.SermonDirections with respect to Public WorshipCongregational Prayer (v1-7)Behave Appropriately (v8-15)Prayer - Paul uses it as a “ministry of intercession”Congregational Prayer1 Timothy 2:1–2 ESV First of all, then, I urge that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivings be made for all people, for kings and all who are in high positions, that we may lead a peaceful and quiet life, godly and dignified in every way.Public WorshipCalmly & without disturbanceOrderly without chaosActions: (total reliance on God)supplications - in need of - humble requests to Godprayers - intercession with God - need for widom, greater consecration, etcintercessions - a pleading in the interest of othersthankgiving - gratitudeRelating to:All PeopleKingsThose in High PositionsFor:Lead peaceful (outward disturbance) and quiet life (inner anxiety & unease)may do nothing to create unnecessary disturbanceGodly - pietyDignified - respectabilitystriving to be blameless in their conduct / attitude toward God and menNot because of favourism, or because of their goodness or characterists (e.g. Nero)1 Timothy 2:3–4 ESV This is good, and it is pleasing in the sight of God our Savior, who desires all people to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth. His Name - God our Saviourdesires all peoples to be saved & to come to the knowledge of the truthwithout distinction of rank, race and nationality1 Timothy 2:5–6 ESV For there is one God, and there is one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus, who gave himself as a ransom for all, which is the testimony given at the proper time. One GodOne Mediator (Christ Jesus)Jew & Gentile / Slave & freeSalvation & RansomJesus establishes peace & reveals it to themProper Time - God’s eternal plan1 Timothy 2:7 ESV For this I was appointed a preacher and an apostle (I am telling the truth, I am not lying), a teacher of the Gentiles in faith and truth.Paul reminds us of his calling by JesusPaul reflects on the false claims of false teachers against himHe is a “herald”Elders (Pastors) equally are called not to “represent” a group or “majority”Behave Appropriately1 Timothy 2:8–10 ESV I desire then that in every place the men should pray, lifting holy hands without anger or quarreling; likewise also that women should adorn themselves in respectable apparel, with modesty and self-control, not with braided hair and gold or pearls or costly attire, but with what is proper for women who profess godliness—with good works.Men should prayRemember Paul’s emphasis on the equality of the sexesGalatians 3:28 ESV There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is no male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus.return…1 Timothy 2:8 ESV I desire then that in every place the men should pray, lifting holy hands without anger or quarreling;Men - PriesthoodGentiles entered into the churchPaul assumes women to be present in the assembly!Prayer Postures in Scripture:Standing - ReverenceHands spread out of lifted heavenward - humble expectancyBowing the Head - submissionLifting eye Heavenward - help comes from Jehovah aloneKneeling - humility & adorationFalling down with the face ib the ground - awe in His divine presenceBut never slumped!!!!Paul is though referring to the inner attitude of the soul1 Timothy 2:9–10 ESV likewise also that women should adorn themselves in respectable apparel, with modesty and self-control, not with braided hair and gold or pearls or costly attire, but with what is proper for women who profess godliness—with good works.Paul does not refer to beautification! It was about vanity (conceit)not to show offnot a fashion shownot old-fashioned or awkwardnot a pretended modestyavoid all extremesbraids, gold, pearls of costly attire - purely status symbolsbut dress with godliness and good worksImparting Knowledge - preaching1 Timothy 2:11–12 ESV Let a woman learn quietly with all submissiveness.
