    Introduction
    We have already considered the part that hymns and prayers are a vital part of corporate worship. What is not always realised is that preaching is as vital to our worship.
    At its core, preaching is communication through which God speaks his message of grace to humanity, a message he delivered definitively through Christ and continues to deliver through Scripture. Preachers function as messengers of God only insofar as they understand and make central the person and work of Christ. Operating in the prophetic tradition, preachers confront audiences not with personal ideas but with God’s Word, ensuring that their spoken words carry the authority of God’s communication. J I Packer

This definition emphasizes that preaching transcends mere performance or institutional practice—it represents divine action mediated through human vessels, always directed toward transformation rooted in God’s redemptive purposes.

    The sermon cannot be an act of worship unless the preacher embodies worship throughout their life; a transformative message emerges from the preacher’s vital encounter with God, and when the study becomes a sanctuary, the proclamation of God’s Word becomes transformative. Simultaneously, the congregation worships through attentive listening.

    This means that he must always be ready to preach the Word of God. He does not have to wait for the time of the formal gathering of God’s people before he can expound the Bible. He has to be prepared to speak God’s Word whatever the time and wherever the place—even on his day off—and he is compelled to preach whether he feels like it or not.
