Call to Worship: Psalm 62:5-7

Hymn: The Solid Rock

Scripture Reading: Jude

Hymn: Depth of Mercy

Hymn: Christ, The Sure and Steady Anchor

Sermon: "You Are the Light of the World"

Matthew 5:14

John Marino

Hymn: O Lord, My Rock and My Redeemer

Hymn: The Solid Rock

My hope is built on nothing less

Than Jesus' blood and righteousness;

I dare not trust the sweetest frame,

But wholly lean on Jesus' name.

On Christ, the solid Rock, I stand;

All other ground is sinking sand,

All other ground is sinking sand.

When darkness seems to hide His face,

I rest on His unchanging grace;

In ev'ry high and stormy gale,

My anchor holds within the veil.

His oath, His covenant, His blood

Support me in the whelming flood;

When all around my soul gives way,

He then is all my hope and stay.

When He shall come with trumpet sound,

Oh, may I then in Him be found;

Dressed in His righteousness alone,

Faultless to stand before the throne

Hymn: Depth of Mercy

Depth of mercy! Can there be

Mercy still reserved for me?

Can my God His wrath forbear,

Me, the chief of sinners, spare?

Whence to me this waste of love?

Ask my Advocate above!

See the cause in Jesus' face,

Now before the throne of grace.

I my Master have denied,

I affresh have crucified

And profaned His hallowed name,

Put Him to an open shame.

Jesus speaks and pleads His blood!

He disarms the wrath of God;

Now my Father's mercies move;

He receives me with His love.

I have long withstood His grace,

Long provoked Him to His face,

Would not hearken to His calls,

Grieved Him by a thousand falls.

There for me the Savior stands,

Shows His wounds, and spreads His hands.

God is love, His grace so free,

Depth of mercy, there for me.

Hymn: Christ, The Sure and Steady Anchor

Christ, the sure and steady anchor,

In the fury of the storm;

When the winds of doubt blow through me,

And my sails have all been torn.

In the suffering, in the sorrow,

When my sinking hopes are few;

I will hold fast to the anchor.

It shall never be removed.

Christ, the sure and steady anchor,

While the tempest rages on;

When temptation claims the battle,

And it seems the night has won,

Deeper still then goes the anchor,

Though I justly stand accused;

I will hold fast to the anchor.

It shall never be removed.

Christ, the sure and steady anchor,

Through the floods of unbelief;

Hopeless, somehow, O my soul, now

Lift your eyes to Calvary.

This my ballast of assurance,

See His love forever proved.

I will hold fast to the anchor.

It shall never be removed.

Christ, the sure and steady anchor,

As we face the wave of death;

When these trials give way to glory

As we draw our final breath.

We will cross that great horizon,

Clouds behind and life secure;

And the calm will be the better

For the storms that we endure.

Christ, the shore of our salvation,

Ever faithful ever true.

We will hold fast to the anchor.

It shall never be removed.

Sermon: "You Are the Light of the World"

You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden.

Matthew 5:14

─────────────────

OUTLINE:

  1. The Darkness of the World
  2. The Light of the Word

THE DARKNESS OF THE WORLD:

Psalm 82:5

They have neither knowledge nor understanding, they walk about in darkness

Isaiah 42:7

…to bring out the prisoners from the dungeon, from the prison those who sit in darkness.

John 3:19

…people loved the darkness rather than the light because their works were evil.

John 3:20

For everyone who does wicked things hates the light and does not come to the light, lest his works should be exposed.

Isaiah 5:20

Woe to those who call evil good and good evil, who put darkness for light and light for darkness, who put bitter for sweet and sweet for bitter!

THE LIGHT OF THE WORD

Matthew 5:14

“You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden.

John 8:12

Again Jesus spoke to them, saying, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”

Psalm 119:130

The unfolding of your words gives light; it imparts understanding to the simple.

Ephesians 4:14

…carried about by every wind of doctrine…

2 Peter 1:19

And we have the prophetic word more fully confirmed, to which you will do well to pay attention as to a lamp shining in a dark place…

Mark 4:21

And he said to them, “Is a lamp brought in to be put under a basket, or under a bed, and not on a stand?

Luke 8:16

“No one after lighting a lamp covers it with a jar or puts it under a bed, but puts it on a stand, so that those who enter may see the light.

Luke 11:33

“No one after lighting a lamp puts it in a cellar or under a basket, but on a stand, so that those who enter may see the light.

"their light must not go out" -Thomas Watson

Proverbs 29:25

The fear of man lays a snare, but whoever trusts in the Lord is safe.

CONCLUSION

"When he comes (and I pray God there will be not one but many) he will stand in flat contradiction to everything our smirking, smooth civilization holds dear. He will contradict, denounce and protest in the name of God and will earn the hatred and opposition of a large segment of Christendom. Such a man is likely to be lean, rugged, blunt-spoken and a little bit angry with the world. He will love Christ and the souls of men to the point of willingness to die for the glory of the one and the salvation of the other. But he will fear nothing that breathes with mortal breath." -A. W. Tozer

Hymn: O Lord, My Rock and my Redeemer

O Lord, my Rock and my Redeemer,

Greatest treasure of my longing soul,

My God, like You there is no other;

True delight is found in You alone.

Your grace, a well too deep to fathom;

Your love exceeds the heavens' reach;

Your truth, a fount of perfect wisdom,

My highest good, and my unending need.

O Lord, my Rock and my Redeemer,

Strong defender of my weary heart,

My sword to fight the cruel deceiver,

And my shield against his hateful darts.

My song when enemies surround me,

My hope when tides of sorrow rise,

My joy when trials are abounding,

Your faithfulness, my refuge in the night.

O Lord, my Rock and my Redeemer,

Gracious Savior of my ruined life;

My guilt and cross laid on Your shoulders;

In my place You suffered bled and died.

You rose the grave and death are conquered!

You broke my bonds of sin and shame!

You rose the grave and death are conquered!

You broke my bonds of sin and shame!

O Lord, my Rock and my Redeemer,

May all my days bring glory to Your Name.

May all my days bring glory to Your Name.
