  • Intro:
Gathered around the Fire, ask the questions of those gathered around, share some bread with them. Imagine the conversation they were having, while having breakfast. There is just something about sitting around and sharing that opens the heart and warms the soul. I sure it was the same for the disciples when they ate with Jesus that morning. Seeing Him one more time before he ascended to heaven. Getting that last ounce of wisdom and love, soaking in that last bit of light
    John 21:13–14 NASB95
Jesus came and took the bread and gave it to them, and the fish likewise. This is now the third time that Jesus was manifested to the disciples, after He was raised from the dead.

    What a Catch

    A. As in the Beginning
    John 21:1–4 NIV
Afterward Jesus appeared again to his disciples, by the Sea of Galilee. It happened this way: Simon Peter, Thomas (also known as Didymus), Nathanael from Cana in Galilee, the sons of Zebedee, and two other disciples were together. “I’m going out to fish,” Simon Peter told them, and they said, “We’ll go with you.” So they went out and got into the boat, but that night they caught nothing. Early in the morning, Jesus stood on the shore, but the disciples did not realize that it was Jesus.
    1. Catching Fish
    a. It is never just about catching fish
    b. Everything God does or asks has a purpose
    c. It seems cliche but it is not
    i. We are small and know not the ways of God
ii. We have to be OK with that, even when it hurts
    2. Children
    John 21:5–6 NASB95
So Jesus said to them, “Children, you do not have any fish, do you?” They answered Him, “No.” And He said to them, “Cast the net on the right-hand side of the boat and you will find a catch.” So they cast, and then they were not able to haul it in because of the great number of fish.
    a. Term here in Greek is Paidia
    i. Meaning is clear, children
    ii. First time calling
    c. The familial indication is consistent in John
    d. Furthermore, we see the transition of the disciples from the fleshly friend to the Spiritual children
    e. Identity
    i. Why he says to cast the net again
    ii. They would recognize that
    Luke 5:4–7 NIV
When he had finished speaking, he said to Simon, “Put out into deep water, and let down the nets for a catch.” Simon answered, “Master, we’ve worked hard all night and haven’t caught anything. But because you say so, I will let down the nets.” When they had done so, they caught such a large number of fish that their nets began to break. So they signaled their partners in the other boat to come and help them, and they came and filled both boats so full that they began to sink.
iii. The net does not tear this time
    John 21:11 NASB95
Simon Peter went up and drew the net to land, full of large fish, a hundred and fifty-three; and although there were so many, the net was not torn.
    B. Peter is Peter
    John 21:7–14 NIV
Then the disciple whom Jesus loved said to Peter, “It is the Lord!” As soon as Simon Peter heard him say, “It is the Lord,” he wrapped his outer garment around him (for he had taken it off) and jumped into the water. The other disciples followed in the boat, towing the net full of fish, for they were not far from shore, about a hundred yards. When they landed, they saw a fire of burning coals there with fish on it, and some bread. Jesus said to them, “Bring some of the fish you have just caught.” So Simon Peter climbed back into the boat and dragged the net ashore. It was full of large fish, 153, but even with so many the net was not torn. Jesus said to them, “Come and have breakfast.” None of the disciples dared ask him, “Who are you?” They knew it was the Lord. Jesus came, took the bread and gave it to them, and did the same with the fish. This was now the third time Jesus appeared to his disciples after he was raised from the dead.
    1. Put his clothes on
    John 21:7 NIV
Then the disciple whom Jesus loved said to Peter, “It is the Lord!” As soon as Simon Peter heard him say, “It is the Lord,” he wrapped his outer garment around him (for he had taken it off) and jumped into the water.

    d. See the abundance
    i. Jesus already had food for them to eat
    Matthew 7:11 NASB95
“If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father who is in heaven give what is good to those who ask Him!
    3. Come and Eat
    John 21:10–14 NIV
Jesus said to them, “Bring some of the fish you have just caught.” So Simon Peter climbed back into the boat and dragged the net ashore. It was full of large fish, 153, but even with so many the net was not torn. Jesus said to them, “Come and have breakfast.” None of the disciples dared ask him, “Who are you?” They knew it was the Lord. Jesus came, took the bread and gave it to them, and did the same with the fish. This was now the third time Jesus appeared to his disciples after he was raised from the dead.

ii. Why we call our elders and pastors shepherds
    C. Do You Love Me
    John 21:17–19 NIV
The third time he said to him, “Simon son of John, do you love me?” Peter was hurt because Jesus asked him the third time, “Do you love me?” He said, “Lord, you know all things; you know that I love you.” Jesus said, “Feed my sheep. Very truly I tell you, when you were younger you dressed yourself and went where you wanted; but when you are old you will stretch out your hands, and someone else will dress you and lead you where you do not want to go.” Jesus said this to indicate the kind of death by which Peter would glorify God. Then he said to him, “Follow me!”

    The Things We Will Know
    John 21:24–25 NIV
This is the disciple who testifies to these things and who wrote them down. We know that his testimony is true. Jesus did many other things as well. If every one of them were written down, I suppose that even the whole world would not have room for the books that would be written.
    a. So much more to know, but not now
    b. We will one day
