- But what fruit were you getting at that time from the things of which you are now ashamed? For the end of those things is death. But now that you have been set free from sin and have become slaves of God, the fruit you get leads to sanctification and its end, eternal life. For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.Introduction:Illustration:Once Upon a TimeLet’s take a look at the first of three verses from our text...But what fruit were you getting at that time from the things of which you are now ashamed? For the end of those things is death. The fruit we were ashamed of was produced by the flesh; encouraged by the world and the father of lies...Once upon a time this is how we livedaccording to the flesh and the worldit was our master - we were it’s slavesOr do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: neither the sexually immoral, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor men who practice homosexuality, nor thieves, nor the greedy, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God. And such were some of you. But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God.Once upon a time we were walking toward our destructionOur minds were set on earthly thingsTheir end is destruction, their god is their belly, and they glory in their shame, with minds set on earthly things. When you live for only what you see you cannot live a life of faithbecause faith is the evidence of things not seen Heb 11:1 KJVfaith is a conviction of things not seen Heb 11:1 ESVLiving by sight only builds human; earthly; worldly desirethat type of life only leads to sin...Then desire when it has conceived gives birth to sin, and sin when it is fully grown brings forth death.[Once upon a time we were Slaves to Sin and Death…but now there exists a way to move from Here to Eternity…]Now Slaves of GodThere is hope and a better way to spend eternity...The second verse of our text reads...But now that you have been set free from sin and have become slaves of God, the fruit you get leads to sanctification and its end, eternal life.To produce this fruit one must know the truthand God’s word is truth Jn 17:17and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”That truth will lead you to a water grave of baptism everytimethere we are born again;added to the family of Godbecoming slaves of God and righteousness...The Spiritual Law of the New Testament has set us free from the Old Covenant of sin and death which no man could keep...For the law of the Spirit of life has set you free in Christ Jesus from the law of sin and death. Now we live as the righteousness of GodWe are no longer under the curse of...the worldthe fleshthat comes from the father of liesJesus sacrifice on Calvary’s Cross has set us free and we ought to live like itJesus didn’t die that we might continue in sinJesus didn’t die that we might return to the ways of the worldJesus didn’t didn’t die so we could gratify the fleshly nature of wickednessJesus didn’t die that we should continue being duped by the father of liesNo! We understand the responsibility that comes from being freed and it is eternally liberating...Live as people who are free, not using your freedom as a cover-up for evil, but living as servants of God.[Romans 6:21-23 demonstrates the contrasts between...
This is the clear parallelism between vv. 21 and 22 that is created if v. 21 is punctuated with a question mark after “then”:
“then”: slaves of sin, free from righteousness
“fruit” bringing shame
“now”: free from sin, slaves of God
“fruit” bringing sanctification
Paul highlights the negative nature of the “freedom” enjoyed by Christians in their past by showing that the “fruit” of which they are now ashamed resulted from that freedom.Wage Earned versus a Gift ReceivedFor the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
We may summarize the verse by noting, with Lloyd-Jones, its three contrasts: the master that is served—sin versus God; the outcome of that service—death versus eternal life; and the means by which this outcome is attained—a “wage” earned versus a gift received. What we work and sow, is what we recieveWhat do you work for?Do you work for self, or God?What bank account do you see your wages going into?is your sexual immorality deposited in a Righteous Bank account?is your idolatry deposited in a Righteous Bank account? Is your thievery deposited in a Righteous Bank account? Is your Greed; your drunkeness; your revelry; your lies; are these the investments you are banking on for eternity? Will they be cashed in for admittance into the Kingdom of Heaven?Do not be deceived: God is not mocked, for whatever one sows, that will he also reap. For the one who sows to his own flesh will from the flesh reap corruption, but the one who sows to the Spirit will from the Spirit reap eternal life. No!We need a different currency to live byWe need a new standard to guide usWe need need to move to a Blessed AssuranceWe can move from here to an eternity with God and all His Saintsbut we got to start living in that faith nowwhile we are in this worldwith all it’s obstacles and trappingsWe need to believe the testimony revealed to us in scripture about the one who died for our sins that we might have an opportunity for eternal life. And this is the testimony, that God gave us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. Whoever has the Son has life; whoever does not have the Son of God does not have life. Now and in the future we proclaim and live by the testimony of this Word that moves us from now to eternityWe preach today and we’ll preach October 18-20 at the Eternity WorkshopsConclusion:Once upon a time we we’re slaves to wickedness and free from righteousnesswhere are you at today?have you obeyed the Lord’s Doctrine that sets you free from sin?Now we are free and can be free as the slaves of Godby being born againyou can start making deposits of righteousness stored up in Heaven where no man can steal it nor can it be corruptedAll our works are like filthy rags before GodIt’s time to accept His free gift of Grace by obeying and following His Way...God’s Plan of SalvationRomans 10:17 ESVSo faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ. So faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ.Acts 16:31 ESVAnd they said, “Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved, you and your household.”And they said, “Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved, you and your household.”Luke 13:3 ESVNo, I tell you; but unless you repent, you will all likewise perish. No, I tell you; but unless you repent, you will all likewise perish.Romans 10:10 ESVFor with the heart one believes and is justified, and with the mouth one confesses and is saved. For with the heart one believes and is justified, and with the mouth one confesses and is saved.Galatians 3:27 ESVFor as many of you as were baptized into Christ have put on Christ. For as many of you as were baptized into Christ have put on Christ.1 Corinthians 15:58 ESVTherefore, my beloved brothers, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that in the Lord your labor is not in vain. Therefore, my beloved brothers, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that in the Lord your labor is not in vain.
