Proverbs 29:18KJV1900
- Central Idea: True spiritual stability is found only by hearing and obeying the words of Christ. A life built on anything else—no matter how impressive—will ultimately collapse under the storms of life and judgment.
Matthew 7:24–27 ESV “Everyone then who hears these words of mine and does them will be like a wise man who built his house on the rock. And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house, but it did not fall, because it had been founded on the rock. And everyone who hears these words of mine and does not do them will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand. And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell, and great was the fall of it.”DICHOTOMY OF THE 2 BUILDERS1. Both Heard the Same WordThe parable begins with an acknowledgment that both men are in the proximity of Christ's teaching. They have access to the truth. In the Church, we are all exposed to the New Testament pattern, the plan of salvation, and the moral commands of Christ. Hearing alone is insufficient.Romans 1:20 ESV For his invisible attributes, namely, his eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly perceived, ever since the creation of the world, in the things that have been made. So they are without excuse. We have access to God’s Word online, store, hotel, Library, etc.2. Both Built a House on a Foundation they ChoseA. WISE MANWhat made him wiseMatthew 7:24 ESV “Everyone then who hears these words of mine and does them will be like a wise man who built his house on the rock.James 1:22 ESV But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves.Acts 17:11 ESV Now these Jews were more noble than those in Thessalonica; they received the word with all eagerness, examining the Scriptures daily to see if these things were so.B. FOOLISH MANWhat made him foolishMatthew 7:26 ESV And everyone who hears these words of mine and does not do them will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand.Proverbs 14:12 ESV There is a way that seems right to a man, but its end is the way to death.Proverbs 16:2 ESV All the ways of a man are pure in his own eyes, but the Lord weighs the spirit.Psalm 14:1 ESV The fool says in his heart, “There is no God.” They are corrupt, they do abominable deeds; there is none who does good.3. Both Experience the StormThe wise builder is not exempt from the storms: rain, floods, and winds (trials, tribulations, persecution, judgment).2 Timothy 3:12 ESV Indeed, all who desire to live a godly life in Christ Jesus will be persecuted,The foolish builder may have had a beautiful house, but it was built on convenience—a quick, easy, shallow foundation (the 'sand' of human tradition, convenience, or mere intellectual agreement).Matthew 7:21 ESV “Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven.4. Both Experienced the Consequences of Their Chose1 Corinthians 3:11 ESV For no one can lay a foundation other than that which is laid, which is Jesus Christ.2 Timothy 2:19 LEB However, the solid foundation of God stands firm, having this seal: “The Lord knows those who are his,” and “Everyone who names the name of the Lord must abstain from unrighteousness.”Isaiah 33:6 ESV and he will be the stability of your times, abundance of salvation, wisdom, and knowledge; the fear of the Lord is Zion’s treasure.Matthew 7:27 ESV And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell, and great was the fall of it.”CONCLUSIONThe storm is coming for everyone. The only question is, what will you be standing on when it hits? The moment to shift foundations is now. Matthew 7:24–27LEB

- Central Idea:God calls His people to live with a spiritual vision shaped by His word, guiding them beyond present circumstances and toward faithful obedience.INTRODUCTIONEvery generation must decide how it will see the world—through the lens of temporary concerns or through the eternal vision God provides.Scripture teaches that without divine vision, people lose direction, purpose, and holiness. But when God’s word shapes our outlook, we walk in clarity, conviction, and confident hope.1. The Peril of Lacking Vision
Proverbs 29:18 NIV Where there is no revelation, people cast off restraint; but blessed is the one who heeds wisdom’s instruction.Proverbs 29:18 ESV Where there is no prophetic vision the people cast off restraint, but blessed is he who keeps the law.Proverbs 29:18 KJV 1900 Where there is no vision, the people perish: But he that keepeth the law, happy is he.Need to Understanding "Perish":Hosea 4:6 ESV My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge; because you have rejected knowledge, I reject you from being a priest to me. And since you have forgotten the law of your God, I also will forget your children.Examples of Lacking Vision:Individual Stagnation:James 4:14 ESV yet you do not know what tomorrow will bring. What is your life? For you are a mist that appears for a little time and then vanishes.Community Decline: A church or community without a shared, God-given vision can lose its focus, leading to disunity and ineffectiveness.Colossians 3:1–2 ESV If then you have been raised with Christ, seek the things that are above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth.2. The Power of a Prophetic VisionProverbs 29:18b: "...but he that keepeth the law, happy is he."“Prophetic Vision" Defined:Refers to a vision grounded in God's revealed will, His law, and His promises, rather than human ambition. It's about seeing life through God's eyes.Adherence to God's word provides the framework and content for this vision. It’s not about legalism, but about living according to divine principles that lead to true happiness and flourishing.Philippians 4:6–7 ESV do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.3. Living with an Eternal VisionAsk yourself why this may be difficult for you to doMatthew 6:33 ESV But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.Romans 8:28 ESV And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose.Titus 2:13 ESV waiting for our blessed hope, the appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior Jesus Christ, Proverbs 29:18ESV
