John 18:38–40NIV2011
John 18:38–40 ESV Pilate said to him, “What is truth?” After he had said this, he went back outside to the Jews and told them, “I find no guilt in him. But you have a custom that I should release one man for you at the Passover. So do you want me to release to you the King of the Jews?” They cried out again, “Not this man, but Barabbas!” Now Barabbas was a robber.TETRARCH Ruler over a part of a Roman province.John 19:1–3 ESV Then Pilate took Jesus and flogged him. And the soldiers twisted together a crown of thorns and put it on his head and arrayed him in a purple robe. They came up to him, saying, “Hail, King of the Jews!” and struck him with their hands.Question #1What did Pilate do to Jesus before presenting Him to the crowd, and what did the soldiers put on Him to mock Him? (John 19:1–3)John 19:4–6 ESV Pilate went out again and said to them, “See, I am bringing him out to you that you may know that I find no guilt in him.” So Jesus came out, wearing the crown of thorns and the purple robe. Pilate said to them, “Behold the man!” When the chief priests and the officers saw him, they cried out, “Crucify him, crucify him!” Pilate said to them, “Take him yourselves and crucify him, for I find no guilt in him.”Question #2When Pilate brought Jesus out, what did he say to the crowd, and how did the chief priests respond?Pilates IntentionsAvoid executing an innocent manPlacate Jewish leadersRidicule the JewsJohn 19:7–11 ESV The Jews answered him, “We have a law, and according to that law he ought to die because he has made himself the Son of God.” When Pilate heard this statement, he was even more afraid. He entered his headquarters again and said to Jesus, “Where are you from?” But Jesus gave him no answer. So Pilate said to him, “You will not speak to me? Do you not know that I have authority to release you and authority to crucify you?” Jesus answered him, “You would have no authority over me at all unless it had been given you from above. Therefore he who delivered me over to you has the greater sin.”WHY PILATE WAS AFRAIDHe knew Jesus was innocent. Three times he said, "I find no fault in Him" (John 18:38; 19:4, 6).His wife had warned him.Matthew 27:19 ESV Besides, while he was sitting on the judgment seat, his wife sent word to him, “Have nothing to do with that righteous man, for I have suffered much because of him today in a dream.”Jesus was not like other prisoners.Jesus did not beg, argue, or threaten. He spoke calmly about a kingdom "not of this world" and said He came "to bear witness to the truth" (John 18:36–37).Pilate had never dealt with a prisoner like that.“Son of God” John 19:7Psalm 2:7 ESV I will tell of the decree: The Lord said to me, “You are my Son; today I have begotten you.Proverbs 30:4 ESV Who has ascended to heaven and come down? Who has gathered the wind in his fists? Who has wrapped up the waters in a garment? Who has established all the ends of the earth? What is his name, and what is his son’s name? Surely you know! That claim struck Pilate in two ways:His Roman background. Romans grew up on stories of gods visiting the earth and of "sons of the gods" walking among men. A superstitious governor would wonder, "What if this Man really is divine? What have I already done to Him?" He had just had Jesus scourged and mocked (19:1–3).His conscience. Pilate already knew he was condemning an innocent man. Now that man might be far more than a man. Mistreating an innocent person is serious, but mistreating the Son of God is worse."Where Are You From?"Pilate was not asking about geography. He already knew Jesus was from Galilee (Luke 23:6–7). He was asking about Jesus' true origin: "Are You from heaven?" That is the very question John's Gospel presses on every reader (John 1:1, 14; 3:13, 31; 8:23).Question #3According to Jesus, where did Pilate's authority over Him come from? (John 19:10–11)John 19:12 ESV From then on Pilate sought to release him, but the Jews cried out, “If you release this man, you are not Caesar’s friend. Everyone who makes himself a king opposes Caesar.”Question #4What did the Jews shout that pressured Pilate into handing Jesus over to be crucified?John 19:13–15 ESV So when Pilate heard these words, he brought Jesus out and sat down on the judgment seat at a place called The Stone Pavement, and in Aramaic Gabbatha. Now it was the day of Preparation of the Passover. It was about the sixth hour. He said to the Jews, “Behold your King!” They cried out, “Away with him, away with him, crucify him!” Pilate said to them, “Shall I crucify your King?” The chief priests answered, “We have no king but Caesar.”Question #5When Pilate asked, "Shall I crucify your King?", what did the chief priests answer?John 19NIV2011
