  • Proverbs 26:23–28 NASB95
Like an earthen vessel overlaid with silver dross Are burning lips and a wicked heart. He who hates disguises it with his lips, But he lays up deceit in his heart. When he speaks graciously, do not believe him, For there are seven abominations in his heart. Though his hatred covers itself with guile, His wickedness will be revealed before the assembly. He who digs a pit will fall into it, And he who rolls a stone, it will come back on him. A lying tongue hates those it crushes, And a flattering mouth works ruin.
Impressive outside but hidden truth lies beneath: 23
“glaze/silver dross”: was the substance skimmed off of molten silver in the refining process which would be used as a veneer over common pottery. This would make it look like true silver pottery.
:burning lips/smooth”: they are warm and full of affectionate praise and affirmations of friendship; yet they are duplicitous, concealing a wicked heart.
The outside looks like a true friend that cares for you but in reality they have a hidden agenda for self gain from you.

Hateful people deceive with gracious speech: 24-26a

“Hate disguises”: [disguise] is the same word used to describe Joseph hiding his true identity to his brother. Here what is being hid is their hate and their lips are the instrument to hide it.
The words that roll over their tongue’s carries no resemblance to the reality of their hearts.
How many of us have been this kind of person, said one thing but the heart was being hide by the words we spoke? How many of us still do this?
:Harbors/lays up”: literally puts deceit in the heart.
    Proverbs 12:20a NASB95
Deceit is in the heart of those who devise evil, But counselors of peace have joy.
    Proverbs 12:20 NASB95
Deceit is in the heart of those who devise evil, But counselors of peace have joy.
“speaks graciously”: (be shown compassion) it is what the person wants you to hear but in their words is the hidden message from their hearts.
“do not believe”: do not take their speech at face value or put any stock in the empty words they say.
    Jeremiah 9:8 NASB95
“Their tongue is a deadly arrow; It speaks deceit; With his mouth one speaks peace to his neighbor, But inwardly he sets an ambush for him.
“seven abominations”: seven- utmost completeness. [abomination- attitudes of the most hateful horror]
    Proverbs 6:16–19 NASB95
There are six things which the Lord hates, Yes, seven which are an abomination to Him: Haughty eyes, a lying tongue, And hands that shed innocent blood, A heart that devises wicked plans, Feet that run rapidly to evil, A false witness who utters lies, And one who spreads strife among brothers.
“hatred covers itself with guile”: They conceal their hatred with deceiving words. They are Janus (Roman god who had two faces) they show you the one you want to see but the other is plotting your destruction.
    Matthew 23:28 NASB95
“So you, too, outwardly appear righteous to men, but inwardly you are full of hypocrisy and lawlessness.

    Consequences: 26b-28

“Wickedness will be revealed”: what has been hidden will eventually be evident for everyone to see.
    Luke 8:17 NASB95
“For nothing is hidden that will not become evident, nor anything secret that will not be known and come to light.
You might hide your malice intentions for a while from men but you are never able to hide them from God who sees the inner dwellings of man.
    1 Samuel 16:7 NASB95
But the Lord said to Samuel, “Do not look at his appearance or at the height of his stature, because I have rejected him; for God sees not as man sees, for man looks at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.”
“dig a pit and roll only to fall and be hit by the rolling stone”: I bring our attention back to Wiley Coyote and the Roadrunner cartoons. How every time the coyote tries to crush or destroy the roadrunner his devious plans backfire back onto him. This “poetic justice” does not come from man but from the hand of the Sovereign Lord.
    Esther 7:10 NASB95
So they hanged Haman on the gallows which he had prepared for Mordecai, and the king’s anger subsided.
“lying tongue hates and crushes”: Words being spread through malicious actions will crush those who they are being spread about. Gossip and back biting is a sin. They destroy the gossiper, the hearer, and the one who is being gossip about. They can and will destroy the unity of the body of Christ and are never to be tolerated.
“flattering mouth works ruins”: these people spread a net to snare those who listen to them.
    Proverbs 29:5 NASB95
A man who flatters his neighbor Is spreading a net for his steps.

    Conclusion/Application:

Hate is the mask of unresolved deceptions.
Does your inner match your outer? Seven abominations!
Wise people are not quick to believe gracious and charming speech.
