John 6:1–14NKJV
- IntroductionWe may be able to identify with the characters in our text today. Some of you may Identify with the disciples, Andrew, Phillip, the multitude, and possibly even Jesus, but no matte who you Identify with, life has a way to give us plenty of opportunity through the reality of life called problems to demonstrate our need for an miracle.Miracles are not meant to be understood, they are meant to be believed.David Martyn Lloyd-Jones (Welsh Preacher and Writer)Dr Ek Bailey defines miracles- Miracles are situations engineered by God himself to bring us face to face with our deficiencies and to see his sufficiency as our only alternative. Did you hear me? Miracles are those situations in life engineered problems.
Mark 6:35–36 ESV 35 And when it grew late, his disciples came to him and said, “This is a desolate place, and the hour is now late. 36 Send them away to go into the surrounding countryside and villages and buy themselves something to eat.”Thousands of people are around listening to Jesus preach for 3 days. There is no Mac-Donalds, Burger King, no KFC, or Georgia Peach. There is no Bankin -fish and Chicken or anywhere else for these people to eat. Minimum to 5k to 20k with women and children, coming toward Jesus and the disciples.John 6:5 ESV 5 Lifting up his eyes, then, and seeing that a large crowd was coming toward him, Jesus said to Philip, “Where are we to buy bread, so that these people may eat?”Jesus ask this posing question to Phillip dealing with the need to the whereabouts of supply to meed the demand that was approaching them. How would yo react if Jesus asked you a question like that? This is an issue with supply and demand. Its an economical problem because of the lack of resourcesIts a social problem due to the custom of the day dealing with hospitality was ingrained within the culture.Even a logistical problem. Who is going to haul all this food to where there were? The disciples initiated this dialogue lacking compassion for the people, but Jesus had compassion for themMatthew 14:14 ESV 14 When he went ashore he saw a great crowd, and he had compassion on them and healed their sick. Not only was Jesus dealing with the lack of compassion of the disciples, but in asking Phillip the evangelist the question, Jesus was probing this question to see if Phillip knew who Jesus is.Just like the Jehovah witness who came to my house yesterday…They think they know jesus, but they do not know. When Jesus, God in flesh ask you a question, you and I need to be careful how we answer it!The answer Phillip gave reflects the way we approach legitimate problems in our life..John 6:7 ESV 7 Philip answered him, “Two hundred denarii worth of bread would not be enough for each of them to get a little.”Phillip attempted to some the problem rational/ mathematical approach, but the answer reflected the hopelessness of his response. For his response did not need the demand the crowd needed given the situation.Thats how it is in life. The demand often exceeds the supply. The demand for our time, our talents and even our treasure are so great for most of us, that we respond in hopelessness as we see the crowds of life moving ever so close to each of us. Jobs being lost; all levels of society is not exempt; Whether your military young, old, or middle age, the pressure of the crowd is ever moving in on us. Andrew, Peter’s brother also speaks to the hopelessness of the situation by pointing to a boy with box lunch saying ,John 6:8–9 KJV 1900 8 One of his disciples, Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, saith unto him, 9 There is a lad here, which hath five barley loaves, and two small fishes: but what are they among so many?Point 1- Give Jesus What you got v10-11Things has to be set in order. Jesus told the disciples to make the men sit down ….Before the miracle could take place, the men need to sit down and listen to Jesus…Give me a man who does not listen to jesus, and I’ll show you a man who is not ready to receive anything…a man who won’t cry for jesus is a man who make his woman cry because of his cruelty. If we could just get more men to sit down in church, the women and children will follow. he didn't tell the women and children to sit down..because the men must lead their homes. Women, if you got a man who listens to Jesus, he’s a keeper.Brothers, sit down so your family can be blessed, your home, play gospel music in the house sometime..make them demons run out of your house when you have a spirit of obedience to Jesus. The disciples saw scarcity, limitations and hopeless, but Jesus saw potential.John 6:6 ESV 6 He said this to test him, for he himself knew what he would do.Jesus used 2 small dried fish , a side dish with bread, not wheat bread , but barley —-this is the low end stuffThe boy’s meal—barley loaves and two small fish—was insignificant in human eyes, yet in Jesus’ hands, it became more than enough. The real hero of this is the little boy…he don’t say a word. he don’t fight to keep his lunch, he gave it to Jesus….and what did jesus do? He took the Loaves, and gave thanks…The Eucharist is a Christian sacrament that commemorates Jesus Christ’s Last Supper, where bread and wine are consecrated and consumed as symbols of His body and blood. It is central to Christian worship, particularly in Catholic, Orthodox, and many Protestant traditions, symbolizing communion with Christ and the unity of believers. We don’t have to wait until 1st Sunday to have communion with Jesus ….When you give him what you have, He’s more than enoughWe need to stop dismissing our gifts thinking its too small for God to use. Jesus dont need great resources…He needs for us to surrender. the Little boy did it, the men did it…GIE HIM WHAT YOU GOT AND SURRENDER TO HIS WILL, HIS POWER, HIS MIGHT, HIS COMPASSION, HIS LOVE, HIS MERCY, SURRENDER …GIVE HIM WHAT YOU GOT…Jeremiah 32:17 ESV 17 ‘Ah, Lord God! It is you who have made the heavens and the earth by your great power and by your outstretched arm! Nothing is too hard for you.Daniel 3:17 KJV 1900 17 If it be so, our God whom we serve is able to deliver us from the burning fiery furnace, and he will deliver us out of thine hand, O king.Point 2-Prepare for the overflow v12-13John 6:12–13 ESV 12 And when they had eaten their fill, he told his disciples, “Gather up the leftover fragments, that nothing may be lost.” 13 So they gathered them up and filled twelve baskets with fragments from the five barley loaves left by those who had eaten.Prepare for the Overflow – I Need a Miracle, but Jesus Is More Than EnoughJohn 6:12–13 (ESV)“And when they had eaten their fill, he told his disciples, ‘Gather up the leftover fragments, that nothing may be lost.’ So they gathered them up and filled twelve baskets with fragments from the five barley loaves left by those who had eaten.”In this passage, Jesus had just performed the miraculous feeding of the 5,000. What began as an overwhelming problem—too many people and not enough food—became an opportunity for divine provision. But the miracle did not stop when the people were simply fed; it continued into the overflow.1. Jesus Provides Beyond Immediate NeedsThe people didn’t just get a small portion; they ate until they were full. This reveals that when Jesus provides, He does so abundantly. We may ask for a miracle of sufficiency, but Jesus works in overflow. When we rely on Him, we won’t just survive our trials—we will walk away with more than we started with.2. The Leftovers Prove God’s AbundanceThe gathering of the twelve baskets of leftover fragments wasn’t accidental. It shows that what Jesus gives is more than enough for the need at hand. This teaches us that God’s provision isn’t just about meeting today’s challenge but ensuring that there’s an overflow of grace, resources, and strength for what lies ahead.Ephesians 3:20–21 ESV 20 Now to him who is able to do far more abundantly than all that we ask or think, according to the power at work within us, 21 to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, forever and ever. Amen.Jude 24 ESV 24 Now to him who is able to keep you from stumbling and to present you blameless before the presence of his glory with great joy,1 Corinthians 2:9 ESV 9 But, as it is written, “What no eye has seen, nor ear heard, nor the heart of man imagined, what God has prepared for those who love him”—John 10:10 ESV 10 The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have life and have it abundantly. Its not about what he can do but Who He is:John 6:35 ESV 35 Jesus said to them, “I am the bread of life; whoever comes to me shall not hunger, and whoever believes in me shall never thirst.Just give me Jesus Give me Jesus And you can have all this world You can have all this world… Give me Jesus Give me Jesus And you can have all this world You can have all this worldJesus don’t just meet your expectations, He more than enough….He not just the Prophet and Priest, but He’s the King…the Lord of Hosts…He will fight your battles if you only wave the white flag and surrender to His will, because He already knows what He’s going to do! He’s never lacking , never insufficient, and never fails, because there is no failure in God…The Complete Book of Bible Lists Performed by ChristPerformed by Christ
BUT the biggest miracle was God becoming a man, born of a virgin shed his blood for my sin and yours died Friday, in the tomb on Saturday, he got up on Sunday Morning with all power in His hands. I need a miracle, but Jesus is more than enough …Give Him what you got….and prepare for the overflow…. Mark 6:35–36NKJV
