Joel 2:28–32NKJV
John 7:37–39NKJV
- Introduction:Church, let us Please Stand and turn to :
John 7:37–39 KJV 1900 37 In the last day, that great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried, saying, If any man thirst, let him come unto me, and drink. 38 He that believeth on me, as the scripture hath said, out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water. 39 (But this spake he of the Spirit, which they that believe on him should receive: for the Holy Ghost was not yet given; because that Jesus was not yet glorified.)Many of us are not thirsty for God because we have quenched our thirst at other fountains!Erwin W. LutzerEvery human being is thirsty for something. Some thirst for:success, pleasure, affirmation, relationships, money, influence, entertainment, achievement, politics, religion,or emotional experiences.Yet the tragedy of the human condition is not merely thirst— it is drinking from the wrong fountains. That is what Jeremiah condemned when God said:Jeremiah 2:13 NASB95 13 “For My people have committed two evils: They have forsaken Me, The fountain of living waters, To hew for themselves cisterns, Broken cisterns That can hold no water. The word “broken” carries the idea of something shattered, smashed, fragmented—something forcefully torn apart into pieces.Whenever we forsake the Lord for broken cisterns, fragmentation follows. Many of us are living with shattered pieces because we drank from sources that could never hold living water. We keep running to fountains that cannot satisfy:careers that leave us empty, relationships that leave us wounded, accomplishments that do not bring peace, addictions that deepen bondage, money that cannot buy joy,sex that cannot heal loneliness, social media that cannot provide identity, power that cannot calm the soul, and even church activity without genuine communion with Christ. We are surrounded by shattered water bottles, that cannot hold no water -spilling emptiness into our communities, workplaces, our families, and even our churches- and many people are still thirsty this morning…Whether you drink a can of Sprite which continues to give you the message obey your thirst, or a bottle of Gatorade that Identifies itself as the Thirst Quencher or a message from the most interesting man in the world according to Dos Equis a beer maker who tells us to “Stay thirsty my Friends” …You will always end up wanting more than what Gatorade, Sprite, or a bottle of fancy beer can do…It does not matter what Cistern or bottle you look to, it will never be enough! The Lord does not want to leave you like this any longer. You do not have to stay in this condition everyday of your life. Jesus has a message for the Thirsty that will feed your soul , renew your focus, and fill your belly…There are three truths from this passage today:Point 1- The Cry for the Thirsty- v37The background of this text is the water-drawing ceremony during the Feast of Tabernacles from the Pool of Siloam to the temple mount about 6.5 American football fields. The ceremony consisted of a golden pitcher of water drawn from the Pool of Siloam and then traveled to the temple mount with the choir singing Psalms 113-118 in an elaborate grand procession commemorating Is 12.3Isaiah 12:3 NASB95 3 Therefore you will joyously draw water From the springs of salvation. In the midst of this charged, holy moment, Jesus cried out in a loud voice, watching the joy and exuberance the people were experiencing as they saw physical water poured out…John 7:37 NASB95 37 Now on the last day, the great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried out, saying, “If anyone is thirsty, let him come to Me and drink. He does not invite the satisfied. He invites the thirsty.Bartenders know something about thirst. They would often give out salty chips and pretzels because the salt created thirst, and thirsty people kept coming back for more. The world knows how to profit from thirst—but Jesus came to satisfy it.Ramp up gradually …The good news of Pentecost is that Jesus does not merely expose our thirst— He provides the living water of the Holy Spirit to satisfy it.Isaiah 55:1 NASB95 1 “Ho! Every one who thirsts, come to the waters; And you who have no money come, buy and eat. Come, buy wine and milk Without money and without cost. When you allow the bartenders of this world to expose your thirst, they’ll mess up your marriages, your money, your careers..but when you come to Jesus , He was thirsty for your soul ..Jesus cries out in John 19.28John 19:28 NASB95 28 After this, Jesus, knowing that all things had already been accomplished, to fulfill the Scripture, said, “I am thirsty.”When you come to Jesus, His human need for thirst identifies with our need for thirst…he knows that you and I don’t have time to dig a well , when your thirsty, we need to be satisfied right now…The world gives you bitterness just like they did to Jesus, but he gives without cost, without money…The Master is calling you and I in a loud voice…Hear his voice for you, His cry for You to turn from the glamor of the ceremony which speaks to Him as the source of life as he stands here today making a personal appeal to you…the broken hearted, the downtrodden, the lonely….How do you define your thirst personally? If you’re thirsty for anything in the place of Jesus, then your soul is drinking from the wrong fountain. Don’t obey your thirst for Sprite—obey your thirst for the Son of God.“Because when you come thirsty… Jesus will never send you away empty.”You and I have hear the cry of advertisers and many others who gave us fools gold , Now its time to hear THE CRY FOR THE THIRSTYProverbs 1:20 KJV 1900 20 Wisdom crieth without; She uttereth her voice in the streets:DO YOU HEAR JESUS CALLING YOU AND I OUT THIS MORNING?Read through the first time then preach through 2 time on the 1 two words: I came…“I came to Jesus just as I was, weary, worn, and sad; I found in Him a resting place, and He has made me glad.”Whats His Name 3x’sTransition: Once your respond to Jesus by faith, can receive the promise of ….Point 2- The Coming of the Spirit- v38John 7:38 NASB95 38 “He who believes in Me, as the Scripture said, ‘From his innermost being will flow rivers of living water.’ ”The reason Jesus can satisfy the thirsty soul is because He does not merely give temporary relief— He gives His Spirit. The hymn says:“I found in Him a resting place…”What is that resting place that makes someone glad?Pentecost explains it.The resting place is the indwelling presence of the Holy Spirit living within the believer.Jesus does not simply help us externally— He comes to dwell within us internally through the Holy Spirit. That is why Jesus said:“Out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water.”The Spirit flows from the inside out.The believer is not the source of the water— Jesus is the source. But the believer becomes the vessel through which the Spirit flows.1 John 3:24 NASB95 24 The one who keeps His commandments abides in Him, and He in him. We know by this that He abides in us, by the Spirit whom He has given us.There can be no outflow unless there is first an intake. (2x)When we receive Christ, the Holy Spirit fills our lives, and what God pours into us begins to flow out of us.That means:His peace flows through us,His love flows through us,His power flows through us,His witness flows through us,and His grace flows through us into the lives of others. This is what it means to be in the over flow…When your in the overflow, The spirit moves from heart to heart and from breast to breast..Galatians 5:22–23 NASB95 22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law.The Spirit was never meant to stop with us. We are not reservoirs storing blessings for ourselves— we are rivers meant to flow into a dry and thirsty world. We are not reservoirs, but channels of blessing, to share with others what God has graciously given to us.Warren W. WiersbeWhen your stopped up, you cannot bless anyone …You live unto yourself and you quench the Spirit1 Thessalonians 5:19 NASB95 19 Do not quench the Spirit;Ephesians 4:30 NASB95 30 Do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption. That is the miracle of Pentecost: Christ now lives in His people through the Holy Spirit, and rivers of living water still flow today.Church, there ought to be something springing up on the inside…“There Is a RiverThere is a river that flows from deep within There is a fountain that frees the soul from sin…—————————————————————Free from White Christian NationalismFree From the Colonialist Sprit of this Nation that wraps the American Flag around the Cross of JesusFree from HateFree from LiesLet the Spirit Come …We believe in Jesus, We heard his call by faith…Let the Spirit flow“Spring Up, O Well”Spring up, O well… within my soul! Spring up, O well… and make me whole! Spring up, O well… and give to me That life abundantly.Point 3- The Coronation of the Son- v39John 7:39 NASB95 39 But this He spoke of the Spirit, whom those who believed in Him were to receive; for the Spirit was not yet given, because Jesus was not yet glorified.when Jesus was glorified, there was a public acknowledgement for Who He is!We can celebrate Jesus because of the most precious/necessary gift He has given to the Church, the Holy Spirit.1 John 4:13 NASB95 13 By this we know that we abide in Him and He in us, because He has given us of His Spirit. But before he could give us His Spirit, He had to receive Glory that was due unto Him…The Accession of Christ was previewed on the Mount of Transfiguration and consummated when he went up yonder…Acts 1:8–9 NASB95 8 but you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be My witnesses both in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and even to the remotest part of the earth.” 9 And after He had said these things, He was lifted up while they were looking on, and a cloud received Him out of their sight. The coronation ceremony unfolds as the Son, having ascended to heaven in His resurrection body, proceeds into the very presence of His Father and the angels, and in fulfillment of ages of regal prophecies, ascends to the throne and sits down. The coronation involves multiple dimensions of Christ’s exaltation. The scripture tells us:Ephesians 1:20–22 NASB95 20 which He brought about in Christ, when He raised Him from the dead and seated Him at His right hand in the heavenly places, 21 far above all rule and authority and power and dominion, and every name that is named, not only in this age but also in the one to come. 22 And He put all things in subjection under His feet, and gave Him as head over all things to the church,He sat down as a sign of honor—the highest honor—and as a sign of authority, acting with the authority and power of Almighty God over all created things.Hebrews 1:3 NASB95 3 And He is the radiance of His glory and the exact representation of His nature, and upholds all things by the word of His power. When He had made purification of sins, He sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high,Hebrews 2:9 NASB95 9 But we do see Him who was made for a little while lower than the angels, namely, Jesus, because of the suffering of death crowned with glory and honor, so that by the grace of God He might taste death for everyone.Acts 2:33 KJV 1900 33 Therefore being by the right hand of God exalted, and having received of the Father the promise of the Holy Ghost, he hath shed forth this, which ye now see and hear.To those who are thirsty, know this: Jesus is not on the cross, He is seated because He is King, at the right hand because HE HAS ALL POWER TO CHANGE YOUR HEART , CHANGE YOUR MIND TO CHANGE THIS WORLD FOIR JESUS PHIL 2.9-11Philippians 2:9–11 NASB95 9 For this reason also, God highly exalted Him, and bestowed on Him the name which is above every name, 10 so that at the name of Jesus every knee will bow, of those who are in heaven and on earth and under the earth, 11 and that every tongue will confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.Deuteronomy 32:30 KJV 1900 30 How should one chase a thousand, And two put ten thousand to flight, Except their Rock had sold them, And the Lord had shut them up?“All Hail the Power of Jesus’ Name”All hail the power of Jesus’ name! Let angels prostrate fall… Bring forth the royal diadem, And crown Him Lord of all!“But now He has ascended… now He reigns… now heaven crowns Him…”Now He reigns… now heaven crowns Him… now angels worship Him… now demons tremble before Him… now the Church proclaims Him… and now the Spirit flows from the throne of the glorified Christ! Then break into:“Bring forth the royal diadem…”Psalm 24:7–10 KJV 1900 7 Lift up your heads, O ye gates; And be ye lift up, ye everlasting doors; And the King of glory shall come in. 8 Who is this King of glory? The Lord strong and mighty, The Lord mighty in battle. 9 Lift up your heads, O ye gates; Even lift them up, ye everlasting doors; And the King of glory shall come in. 10 Who is this King of glory? The Lord of hosts, he is the King of glory. Selah.Finish with Lift Him Up (2x’s) Still He speaks from eternity, If I , If I be lifteed up from all the earth, I’ll draw all men unto thee..
