    Intro
For the past weeks we have been looking at How God Turns Setbacks into Comebacks.
We have looked at Business or work setbacks… at how after fishing all night the disciples caught nothing, but how Jesus turned it around for them.
We have looked at How God Turns a setback that’s not your fault into a comeback.
We also looked at Elijah and the fatigue and the depression he had as a setback, when you've had setbacks that leave you emotionally empty.
And then we looked at Nehemiah, remember about how he handled the discouragement when they were building that wall around Jerusalem, and when you feel like giving up.
We looked at the life of Joseph and how the seven setbacks in his life are actually stepping stones rather than stumbling blocks on the path that God had to get Joseph to his ultimate success.
When a setback fills you with fear. And we looked at how Mary and Joseph and Herod and the shepherds all had to deal with different kinds of fears when Jesus was born.
Last week, we looked at setback of that seems reversible. And we looked at Job's amazing comeback from a total collapse of everything in his life.
Tonight we will look at another famous person in the Bible, Noah. The life of Noah will teach us what to do when no one else understands your goal. When you have a dream God has given you and your are trying to do something but no one else gets it.
God used Noah to save the Human Race. That’s a big mission. The bigger the mission God gives you, the bigger the problems you can expect to face will be. And you can also expect that when God gives that dream or goal for your life, that a lot of people won’t understand it.
I remember when I began the process of starting up YFC, people were like… why would you leave a good paying career to raise your missionary support. It looked like I was jumping off a cliff.
Maybe you're in this situation today. You say I know what I want to do with my life. I know what God wants me to do with my life, I know what my goal is, my dream, my vision is, but nobody else gets it.
When most people think of Noah, they always want to know about the details of the flood and the details of the ark… the boat… animals… all that is fascinating.
But today, I want to focus on Noah the man. I want to focus on how he handled getting the ARK built when nothing like that had ever been built before. The thought of a flood had not ever been thought of because it had never rained at that point.
The people around Noah had no idea what he was talking about and didn’t believe him. No one believed that God was going to flood the earth and only those on an Ark would survive.
History - The Bible tells us that there was a time on earth when mankind got so deprived and so wicked and so perverted that God regretted creating human beings. And God was ready to just wipe out the entire human race and start all over from scratch. But he looked down on earth and he found one guy, one guy with a pure heart, a true believer with integrity, who genuinely loved God, and he wanted to do the right thing. And that guy's name was Noah. God looks down and he finds Noah, and he tells Noah, "Noah, I'm going to make it rain." Now, the Bible says before that that God had watered the earth, plants from a dew, a mist that came up from the ground at night.
The entire firmament of the earth changed, the climate, you're talking about climate change. It had never rained on earth before this, which is why they had never seen a rainbow, why they'd never heard of a flood. And by the way, it's probably why they lived so much longer in those days. They lived hundreds of years longer in the early years of the earth, the Bible tells us. In fact, Noah lived nearly 600 years and took him nearly 100 years to build the ark. But God said, "I'm going to make it rain so much that it's going to create a worldwide flood and it's going to cover the entire earth and it's going to wipe out everything, but I'm going to save your family and your sons and your wives, and they're going to repopulate the earth."
Which means Noah is your ancestor, we're all related to Noah somehow. We're all family in that way. Now, God says, "The way I'm going to save you is I'm going to have you build this giant boat, which we'll call the ark. And I'm going to give you the plans, and I'm going to teach you how to build it with your sons, but it's going to take a long, long, long time to build it."
And using the ages of Noah's sons, Bible scholars have figured out that it probably took about 80 - 100 years to build the ark. And during this time, no one, no one on earth except Noah's family would understand Noah's goal. And he's building this ark in the front yard. Nobody's going to understand, the neighbors are not going to understand what's going on, why Noah is doing it. Everybody's going to think you're crazy, Noah.
Now, this is the setup for this story of Noah that we find in Genesis chapter 6 to chapter 9. And in Noah's story, we learn that he reached his goal, the mission that God gave him in spite of four common pitfalls. Now, these are pitfalls that can cause setbacks in your life. They can keep you from succeeding in the vision, in the dream, in the goals that God has for your life, God's plan and purpose for your life. They are distractions, doubts, detours, and delays.
Now, specifically, Noah shows us the antidote to four things, first, cultural distractions. These are the things that are around your life that waste your time and waste your energy and waste your focus and waste your money when God says, "Here's what I want you to do with your life."
The second pitfall is what I call voices of doubt, and that's those voices that you hear from people around you that cause you to second guess yourself and your goal in life. The third pitfall are what I call tempting detours, and these are things that look like shortcuts, this will save me some time, but they actually points you in the wrong direction. And the fourth pitfall that Noah had to avoid is what I call discouraging delays because it took him almost a hundred years to build this ark.

Four Choices I Must Make in Order to Fulfill God’s Purpose for My Life

Now, we learn that the same four choices that Noah made to overcome these pitfalls, are the same four choices that you must make in order to fulfill God's purpose and God's plan for your life.
Let's get right into it. Here's the first choice that Noah made that you're going to have to make in order to get to the fulfillment of the dream, the vision, the goal God has for your life

    1. I must dare to be different from the culture.

Until you settle this, you will never fulfill God’s plan in your life. You can’t fit in with culture and with God’s plan for your life. Culture changes like the wind, God and His purposes do not.
Look what our passage says about Noah.
    Genesis 6:9 GW
9 This is the account of Noah and his descendants.  Noah had God’s approval and was a man of integrity among the people of his time. He walked with God.
If you are going to do anything significant with your life, you will do it in spite of the culture and not because of it. Culture will distract you.
There are plenty of cultural distractions but here are four.
Pleasure - our world is pleasure crazy. We live for fun, comfort, and entertainment. You can’t live for those and live for God.
Possessions - Our culture judges success by how much you accumulate.
Popularity - You can’t focus on being popular and doing what God has called you to do. You can’t worry about what people think about you and serve God.
Profit - If your number one goal is to make more money… Jesus said you cannot serve God and Money. He didn’t say that you can’t have a lot of money, but that can’t be your goal. You can’t serve both.

Whatever is number one in your life will be your God.

In Noah’s day, the culture had hit bottom. It was even worse than ours… that’s hard to imagine but it was.
    Genesis 6:11–12 NLT
11 Now God saw that the earth had become corrupt and was filled with violence. 12 God observed all this corruption (depravity) in the world, for everyone on earth was corrupt.
Corruption, Depravity, Violence, Cruelty - sound familiar?
    Genesis 6:5–6 LBP
5 When the Lord God saw the extent of human wickedness, and that the trend and direction of men’s lives were only towards evil, 6 he was sorry he had made them. It broke his heart.
Wow. God was sorry that he made people. Now that’s bad. Our culture is broken by all sorts of sin, all kinds of evil and it broke God’s heart.
When God created the world he said it was good. But now it wasn’t good any longer.
By the way, which direction do you think it’s going today? Towards civility? or incivility? towards more violent or more peaceful? We are going in the same direction as the culture of Noah’s day.
    Luke 17:26 NCV
26 When the Son of Man comes again, it will be as it was when Noah lived.
First, Jesus is coming back, and it will be soon. He said it will be like the days of Noah when he comes. IOW the same things that were going on in Noah’s day will be going on today. Violence… Depravity… Corruption… Cruelty… All of that is getting worse.
These are distractions of our culture. Our culture is dark but the good news is that in Noah’s time, God found a bright spot. Look what the Bible says,
    Genesis 6:8 MSG
8 But Noah was different. God liked what he saw in Noah.
Noah was different. God liked what he saw in Noah while the entire world, all of culture was headed in one direction, two words saved the world, but Noah.
I want all of us to to be that kind of person in today’s world. I want us to be like Noah that we turn against the culture … that we go in the other direction from culture.
Noah was not worried about fitting into the culture or the approval of other people. He wasn’t worried about keeping up with the latest trends. Because the trends of the culture are going in the wrong direction. It's not important to be on the right side of a trend. It's not important to be on the right side of history. It is important to be on the right side. History is often wrong, trends are often wrong. And if you're going to be all that God intends for you to be as a man or as a woman, you must be willing to be different. Noah was willing to be different in order to fulfill his destiny.

I can only make a difference by being different

Do you want to make a difference in this world, do you want to make a difference in your family, do you want to make a difference in your community, your school, your business? I can only make a difference by being different. If I try to be like everybody else, I'm never going to make a difference. You're never going to make a difference unless you're willing to be like Noah where you ignore cultural distractions. The LB says,
    Genesis 6:8 LBP
8 But Noah was a pleasure to the Lord. Here is the story of Noah:
I want God to be able to say that about you, I want other people to be able to say that about you, that you were a pleasure to the Lord. God said that about Noah. Can God say that about you? Are you going the way of the crowd? You're going in the way of culture, you're going in the way of society.
    Look what God told Noah…
    Genesis 7:1 MSG
1 Next God said to Noah, “Now board the ship, you and all your family—out of everyone in this generation, you’re the righteous one.
Can God say that about us?
Living with integrity requires the courage to be different. And if I'm going to fulfill my destiny in life, you must be willing to walk a different direction than everybody else around you.

    2. I must listen to God, not the voices of doubt.

Can you imagine all the doubts that Noah had when God comes and says, “I'm going to destroy the world to start over, I'm going to start over with your family. You're going to build an ark, there's a thing called rain. It's going to rain, there's going to be a flood. And you're going to be able to do this.” He goes, "Really, me?"
Voices of doubt can come from many, many different places in your life. Some of you are listening to voices of doubt right now.
God has given you a vision, given you a dream that's been in your hearts since you were young, or maybe it's a new vision, a new dream about you've caught a vision of what God could do in your life. But maybe your spouse doesn't believe it or maybe your parents don't believe it, or maybe your girlfriend or your boyfriend or somebody at work, or even your best friend.
Voices of doubt can come from a lot of different places. They can come from critics, you expect that. They can come from competition, who do you think you are? Why would you even try to do that? Why would you even try to develop that product, that business, whatever? They can come from Satan. The Bible calls Satan, the accuser of Christians, the accuser of the brothers. And he's always saying, "You can't do this, you're no good. You'll never amount to anything."
When you hear that, that's not God talking to you, that's Satan. Satan accuses, God comforts. The Bible says there's no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus, but visions of doubt can actually come from your friends and their friends who say, "We grew up with, who do you think you are?" Or they can even come from your family.
Imagine all the dream busters in Noah's life. I mean, he's building this giant ark out in his front yard, and his neighbor is going, "Hey, Mr. Noah, what are you doing?" "I'm building an ark." "What's that for?" "Because it's going to flood." "What's a flood?" "It's when you get a lot of rain." "What's rain?" "Well, it's water that comes down from heaven." They'd never seen it. They go, "This guy is crackpot, he's lost it." I'm sure he had to live with year after year, after year, after year of ridicule from his neighbors. He's a nut, he's a crackpot, he's a kook.
Imagine even the pressure from his own family. His teenage boys go, "Dad, come on the ship on the front lawn, it's embarrassing. I can't bring my girlfriend, I can't bring my friends over. Dad, why can't you get a normal job? You're building on this thing for decade after decade, after decade. This doomsday talk is all over town. Dad, our family is in the National Enquirer: Noah family building ark, the world is going to end."
If you were Noah, would you be willing to endure the voices of doubt like that?
Imagine it year after year, after year, no rain, no rain, no rain, no rain, no rain, no rain for decade after decade, after decade. The ark is getting bigger and bigger, and bigger. God's going to bring all the animals, where are they? I don't see them. It took an awful lot of faith.
Now, let me just apply this to your life. Dream busters will try to stop your dream. They will try to stop you, and critics and cynics are going to say to you, who do you think you are to try to live for Jesus Christ, to do something great for God? Who do you think you are to have a mission from God, a plan, a purpose, a great vision from God? Friends and family may do this.
Joseph's family tried to kill his dream. We looked at that? He had that dream, and they all tried to kill him.
Jesus' family tried to stop him from fulfilling God's purpose.
You go all through your Bible, person after person. Family members often tried to stop another family member from doing what God had called them to do.
But you know what, the biggest voices of doubt can actually come from inside you.
And the second most important words you say in life are to yourself. And you talk to yourself constantly, and you're saying to yourself things like, "I'm no good, who do I think I am? This won't work." You're talking yourself down, you're giving yourself seeds doubt all of the time, or you're listening to the word of God and you're telling yourself what God says about you. And you're saying things like, "I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me. My confidence isn't in myself, my confidence is in Christ who gives me the strength to do. If God has called me to do something, he's going to give me the strength to do it."
God never called you to do something that he doesn't give you the energy and the power and the equipment and the friends and the contacts to actually get done. Let me ask you, how do you talk to yourself? You're talking to yourself with voices of doubt all the time. Some of you, if you talk to your friends the way you talk to you, they wouldn't be your friends. You need to talk to yourself the way you talk to your friends.
I need to say something else here. You can't be trusted to always tell yourself the truth. I have said this many times, you lie to yourself more than you lie to anybody else. Now, the Bible says the heart is deceitful. And we tell ourselves things are better than they really are when they aren't. And sometimes, we tell ourselves things are worse than they really are.
We don't always get it right. Not everything you tell yourself is the truth. We have motivated reasoning. Not everything you're thinking is the truth. Well, I think that it must be true, I feel that it must be true. No, feelings lie, and even ideas that you come up with lie. You have to listen to God if you're going to fulfill God's mission for your life.
Now, what is the antidote to fear and doubt in your life? Well, in the word, it's faith, it's faith.
    Hebrews 11:7 NCV
7 It was by faith that Noah heard God’s warnings about things he could not yet see. He obeyed God and built a large boat to save his family. By his faith, Noah showed that the world was wrong, and he became one of those who are made right with God through faith.
It was by faith that Noah heard warning against something he couldn’t see.
He couldn’t see the flood… the animals… what the ark was going to look like… But he heard God and trusted God and obeyed God.
Now, let's just apply this to your life. You can't always see God's destiny for you either. You don't know where you're going to be in 10 years or 20 years or 30 years, much less next week. You have to trust God and that’s what faith is.
    Hebrews 11:1 NLT
1 Faith shows the reality of what we hope for; it is the evidence of things we cannot see.
Noah was a man of faith and the faith was the antidote to his fear, and the faith was the antidote to his voices of doubt.
Paul also dealt with this in…
    2 Corinthians 4:18 NLT
18 So we don’t look at the troubles we can see now; rather, we fix our gaze on things that cannot be seen. For the things we see now will soon be gone, but the things we cannot see will last forever.
That’s good perspective. The problems we see now will be over soon enough, but the unseen joys that we don’t see right now will come and they will last forever.
Maybe you are depressed. Never make a major decision when you are depressed. Don’t make a permanent decision when you are in a temporary mood because feelings change.
Whether you are blessed now or stressed now or later is going to be determined by what you choose to focus on.
Will you listen to the voices of doubt or to the voice of God? Noah chose to be different than everyone around him and listen to God.
    Hebrews 11:7 LBP
7 Noah was another who trusted God. When he heard God’s warning about the future, Noah believed him even though there was then no sign of a flood, and wasting no time, he built the ark and saved his family. Noah’s belief in God was in direct contrast to the sin and disbelief of the rest of the world—which refused to obey—and because of his faith he became one of those whom God has accepted.
Noah’s belief was in contrast to the rest of the culture. Nobody else believed in what he said or what he was doing.

Our challenge is to become counter cultural revolutionaries.

We do that by trusting God through His Word and obeying Him… not the culture. We do this by doing what God tells us to do and not what the culture says to do or believe. To do this we have to stay close to God and we stay close to God through His Word… the Bible.
Look what the last part of this verse says
    Genesis 6:9 NIV84
9 This is the account of Noah. Noah was a righteous man, blameless among the people of his time, and he walked with God.
He spent time with God. The NLT says it this way…
    Genesis 6:9 NLT
9 This is the account of Noah and his family. Noah was a righteous man, the only blameless person living on earth at the time, and he walked in close fellowship with God.
    The Good News translation says…
    Genesis 6:9 GNB
9 This is the story of Noah. He had three sons, Shem, Ham, and Japheth. Noah had no faults and was the only good man of his time. He lived in fellowship with God,
What does it mean to walk with God? When you are walking with someone, it implies three things.

Walking with God implies affiliation with God.

You are not ashamed to be seen with someone… God. You are not worried about telling people you are a believer.

Walking with God implies that are in agreement with each other.

We can’t walk together if we are going in different directions. We have to agree on where we are going.

Walking with God implies that are in alignment with each other.

We are going in the same direction at the same pace.
That's what it means to walk with God, you're not ashamed of him. You're going in the same direction, and you're going in the same pace. How do you know if you're walking with God? Those same three things.
    There is actually a 4th way…

Walking with God means that you will be out of step with culture.

You will be out of step with the world. You cannot walk with God and walk instep with a sin crazed culture.
Listen to me. When you walk with God, you fear nothing. Noah wasn’t afraid… of disapproval… comments… criticisms …
You lose your fear with you are close to God. Look what God told Noah…
    Genesis 6:17–18 CEV
17 I’m going to send a flood that will destroy everything that breathes! Nothing will be left alive. 18 But I solemnly promise that you, your wife, your sons, and your daughters-in-law will be kept safe in the boat.
Noah is not afraid of a flood that is going to destroy the whole world. He is close to God.
What are you afraid of? What's caused you to be anxious? What's caused you to be sleepless at night? What just tightens your stomach into a knot?
You've got to stop listening to the voices of doubt and anxiety and fear and start listening to the voice of God by walking with God, by getting near to God. And when he's near, you lose your fear.
We have to stop listening to the voiced of fear and doubt, start listening to the voice of God by walking with God and…

    3. I must do exactly what God tells me to do.

Noah didn’t just hear what God said. He did what God said for him to do.
    Hebrews 11:7 NCV
7 It was by faith that Noah heard God’s warnings about things he could not yet see. He obeyed God and built a large boat to save his family. By his faith, Noah showed that the world was wrong, and he became one of those who are made right with God through faith.
I am saying that we must do what God tells us to do and do it the way he says to do it and at the time he wants me to do it. I have to do what God wants me to do.

    Partial obedience is disobedience.

    Genesis 6:14–22 NLT
14 “Build a large boat from cypress wood and waterproof it with tar, inside and out. Then construct decks and stalls throughout its interior. 15 Make the boat 450 feet long, 75 feet wide, and 45 feet high. 16 Leave an 18-inch opening below the roof all the way around the boat. Put the door on the side, and build three decks inside the boat—lower, middle, and upper. 17 “Look! I am about to cover the earth with a flood that will destroy every living thing that breathes. Everything on earth will die. 18 But I will confirm my covenant with you. So enter the boat—you and your wife and your sons and their wives. 19 Bring a pair of every kind of animal—a male and a female—into the boat with you to keep them alive during the flood. 20 Pairs of every kind of bird, and every kind of animal, and every kind of small animal that scurries along the ground, will come to you to be kept alive. 21 And be sure to take on board enough food for your family and for all the animals.” 22 So Noah did everything exactly as God had commanded him.
Notice this important line in this passage. Noah did everything exactly as God commanded him. That’s why we are talking about Noah to this day. It’s why any of us are alive. If Noah had not obeyed God, humanity would have died in the flood.
In our lives, we need to do the same… no shortcuts.. no changes to what God said… no doing it our way… That will lead to failure.
Have you tried to do that? Tried to accomplish what YOU want in your life and not what God wants? Can you imagine Noah saying to God, we need to talk… all these animals… really? Mosquitoes.
    Genesis 7:1–5 NLT
1 When everything was ready, the Lord said to Noah, “Go into the boat with all your family, for among all the people of the earth, I can see that you alone are righteous. 2 Take with you seven pairs—male and female—of each animal I have approved for eating and for sacrifice, and take one pair of each of the others. 3 Also take seven pairs of every kind of bird. There must be a male and a female in each pair to ensure that all life will survive on the earth after the flood. 4 Seven days from now I will make the rains pour down on the earth. And it will rain for forty days and forty nights, until I have wiped from the earth all the living things I have created.” 5 So Noah did everything as the Lord commanded him.
Again, Noah did everything God told him to do. Twice we're told that he's not taking shortcuts.
You cannot take tempting shortcuts and reached the goal God has for your life.
moral shortcut. God wants me to be happy, so I'm going to divorce this person and marry that person.
ethical shortcut, well, everybody else cheats at work, so I'm going to cheat at work
financial short cut, you're not really honest here or there. You're not tithing. I'm going to use God's money, the money that God says give back to him to honor him.
Live together before marriage or go to bed with him before you get married.
You are saying that your way is better and it’s NOT.
    Look…
    Genesis 6:9 NLT
9 This is the account of Noah and his family. Noah was a righteous man, the only blameless person living on earth at the time, and he walked in close fellowship with God.
Noah always tried to do what God told him. If we want God’s blessings, we need to be like Noah and consistently follow and obey the Lord.
    Genesis 6:9 LBP
9 He was the only truly righteous man living on the earth at that time. He tried always to conduct his affairs according to God’s will. And he had three sons—Shem, Ham, and Japheth.
We need to consistently conduct our affairs according to God’s will.

    4. I must never give up on the dream God gives me.

If anybody had the right to be discouraged because it took so long, the project was taking so long, it was Noah. It took him about 100 years to build the Ark. He got in the ark and closed the door exactly 120 years after God told him to build it.
Would you be able to maintain enthusiasm for a project that took you 120 years and nobody else in the world believed in and everybody else criticized and made fun of? Could you handle that kind of opposition?
Most people don’t succeed because they give up too soon. Remember it’s in the middle of a project that we want to quit… or the middle of our life. Don’t give up!
The culture says live for today. God says live for eternity. So think about your future and remember that everything takes longer than you think.
Noah is a great model of persistence and determination.
Noah believed God when there had never been any rain and there wasn’t a cloud in the sky.
What is it in your life that you see no sign of, but God has told you and promise you it's going to happen? Are you going to give up? Are you going to keep trusting?
I’m sure there were days when Noah didn’t want to work on the Ark. I imagine he felt like giving up… don’t. Gal 6:9
    Galatians 6:9 LBP
9 And let us not get tired of doing what is right, for after a while we will reap a harvest of blessing if we don’t get discouraged and give up.
Did you know that the Ark was a symbol… a prophesy of Jesus? In the ark, Noah and his family were saved from destruction. In Christ, we are saved from destruction, by being in Christ. Noah was saved by being in the ark. The ark for you is Jesus Christ.
How is Noah saved, same way as everybody else, by grace through faith. Did you know that the first mention of grace in the Bible is Noah's story?
    Hebrews 11:7 NCV
7 It was by faith that Noah heard God’s warnings about things he could not yet see. He obeyed God and built a large boat to save his family. By his faith, Noah showed that the world was wrong, and he became one of those who are made right with God through faith.
Noah showed that the world was wrong and he became one of those who was made right with God through faith, faith in God's grace.
    Look at the next verse…
    Genesis 6:8 NKJV
8 But Noah found grace in the eyes of the Lord.
That's the first mention of grace in the Bible. The Grace of God for Noah at the time was the Ark. The Grace of God for all is Jesus.
God is looking for people to use, would you let him use you? Would you let him fulfill his destiny in you? If you want to fulfill your destiny in life, you've got to do what Noah did. You've got to make the choices that Noah made.
Let's bow our heads. Let me pray for you
    Salvation Prayer.
Lord help me to be the kind of person Noah was. I want my life to bring you pleasure and I want my faith to be strong to the finish. Help each of us to fulfill the destiny you have for us.
