  • Back to school this week? Who is your favorite teacher? Or who was your favorite teacher? I have been blessed with some outstanding teachers in my life. We are blessed here with Rev. Elliott. If you have been in any of his classes he is an outstanding teacher.
We all have different learning styles, and different abilities, and good teachers can engage all students. I think science teachers perhaps have it easiest to some degree. They can do all these cool experiments that show you what you are learning. They involve you, and demonstrate with a wild experiment what they are teaching.
What was it about that teacher that really made you learn? I remember as a kid when my mom was trying to teach me how to cook. I would chop vegetables, almost cutting my finger, or stir wildly and batter would go over the side of the bowl. My mother would run over and say no Greg that is not how you do it, let me show you. Then she would show me, and the light would come in and I would get it.
That may work for stirring but some abstract topics make it difficult to teach that way. For example wisdom. If I was going to teach you how to have wisdom, how would I go about that? It is really hard. Wisdom can be thought of as applied intelligence. How do you show people how to have wisdom? Is that even possible.
A legendary christian book, written by Robert Coleman in 1963, was titled “The Master Plan of Evangelism”. Many have argued that the book should have been titled the Master Plan of Discipleship because it is more like a plan on discipleship., rather than evangelism.
In the book Coleman shows how Jesus taught his disciples. Coleman studies the gospels and and describes a model for the way Jesus instructs his disciples. He makes the case that the key to Jesus’s instructing the disciples is spending time with them.Day in and day out for the three years Jesus is teaching the disciples wisdom from God. Here is short clip of a spoken word poet, describing the Masters plan of Evangelism.
But wait, we did not have the privilege of spending time with Jesus-Oh how we long in our hearts in walk with Jesus. To be actually be able to hear His voice audibly. To ask him at any moment should i do this or should I do that.
    John 16:7 NIV
7 But very truly I tell you, it is for your good that I am going away. Unless I go away, the Advocate will not come to you; but if I go, I will send him to you.
It is for your good that i go away…How can that be good? Jesus promises that the Holy Spirit will come. In the first reading this morning we hear this.
    John 14:26 NIV
26 But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you.
Will teach you all things. Could it be that we can still learn directly from God even though we don’t have Jesus right beside us?

    1 Corinthians 2:6–10 NIV
6 We do, however, speak a message of wisdom among the mature, but not the wisdom of this age or of the rulers of this age, who are coming to nothing. 7 No, we declare God’s wisdom, a mystery that has been hidden and that God destined for our glory before time began. 8 None of the rulers of this age understood it, for if they had, they would not have crucified the Lord of glory. 9 However, as it is written: “What no eye has seen, what no ear has heard, and what no human mind has conceived”— the things God has prepared for those who love him— 10 these are the things God has revealed to us by his Spirit. The Spirit searches all things, even the deep things of God.
Today, we are continuing on in our study of 1 Corinthians, and we enter a new section.
If you have a Bible with headings it may say something like this.
God’s wisdom revealed by the Holy Spirit
Here is a refresher-In the last section we were studying, Paul wrote that the message of the Gospel is either foolishness to those who are perishing or the power of God to those being saved. Paul argued that other speakers, that is those not preaching the true gospel, are lacking in true wisdom. He argued that the gospel contains something other than that which comes from man. It has with it a power that comes from God. He argued that the proof is that in weakness and foolishness God is being made known. Now as we begin the next section Paul is going tell us how that happens.
The beginning of the next section is found in verse 6, where Paul writes...
    1 Corinthians 2:6 NIV
6 We do, however, speak a message of wisdom among the mature, but not the wisdom of this age or of the rulers of this age, who are coming to nothing.
He starts with WE, now who is the we? That is hard to say exactly. It is possible that Paul is including people who helped start the Church, and are ministering with him, as a group of unified church leaders, speaking to the church, from the outside, Or perhaps he is including the local elders of the church and is speaking as a unified leadership body to distinguish them from other speakers. Either way it does not significantly effect what we will take away from this.
Paul writes We do however, Now, we come across a linking word However. That introduces a statement that contrasts with the previous statement.
Such as---- I really love eating ice cream, however I do not need the extra calories.
So, in order to fully understand the however we need to back up and get a running start to find what Paul is contrasting, so verse 4 and 5.
    1 Corinthians 2:4–5 NIV
4 My message and my preaching were not with wise and persuasive words, but with a demonstration of the Spirit’s power, 5 so that your faith might not rest on human wisdom, but on God’s power.
Paul says his message and preaching was not wise or persuasive by human standards. So what Paul brought to the table was nada zero zippo. He was a horrible teacher.
I have also had some really bad teachers. Teachers that I could not connect with. Some that I could not understand, or were boring etc. Paul is saying he is not a good teacher.,But does that mean that the message is useless as well?
Does that mean that the message has no earthly use? Is it just pie in the heavenly sky? What is that saying? He is so heavenly minded he is of no earthly good?
Here is that word.... verse 6...
    1 Corinthians 2:6 NIV
6 We do, however, speak a message of wisdom among the mature, but not the wisdom of this age or of the rulers of this age, who are coming to nothing.
We do however speak a message of wisdom..... but it is among the mature. There is wisdom here, but it is not for everyone is it?
We speak a message of wisdom for the mature. Now Paul is not talking about maturation in sense of everyday human maturation. Like the difference between a child and adult. He is not saying that this wisdom is only for the adults, but he is saying that is for the spiritually mature.
That word means complete or whole, and it comes specifically from the reference to sacrifices, like the whole sacrifice. So think of it this way. when you have come to the point where your whole life is sacrificial, you are fully mature.
Here are some further passages that use this same word.
    Ephesians 4:13 NIV
13 until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God and become mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ.
Here maturity is unity in faith-knowledge of Jesus, attaining the whole measure of fullness of Christ.
    Hebrews 5:14 NIV
14 But solid food is for the mature, who by constant use have trained themselves to distinguish good from evil.
Here the mature distinguish good from evil. and
    James 1:4 NIV
4 Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything.
There is the completeness. That is not to say that he is only talking about those that have reached a full matureness he is talking more about those on the path to maturity from believing the gospel.
Do not think in terms of a higher level of Christianity. God saves people in their own time, each person grows and matures differently. When we are born again we are all fully justified, we are all in Christ--the person saved on His death bed is just as saved the one who has been a Christian their whole life. There are not different levels of Christianity, we are all in one body. Paul will go on to make a bit of a distinction, and not in a positive way but we will talk about that in chapter 3.
    Back to 2.6
    1 Corinthians 2:6 NIV
6 We do, however, speak a message of wisdom among the mature, but not the wisdom of this age or of the rulers of this age, who are coming to nothing.
Paul’s message does have wisdom among the mature, but not the same as the wisdom of this age or the rulers of this age have. Paul is doing this strict contrast again that we saw in the last section. Spiritually minded or those who have responded to the Gospel, those who see the gospel as the power of God, and then there are those that rely on the wisdom of the world taught without the gospel, the quick fix feel good philosophy, 15 ways to be all you can be. ^% ways to live holier then than your neighbor.
Interestingly, Paul may also have in mind the powers of the dark world or spiritual forces of darkness as well. The language is very similar to Ephesians 6.12
    not on screen
    Ephesians 6:12 NIV
12 For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.
Those people that live their life like that they are coming to nothing, Poof right void
    Psalm 146:4 NIV
4 When their spirit departs, they return to the ground; on that very day their plans come to nothing.
    or verse 28
    1 Corinthians 1:28 NIV
28 God chose the lowly things of this world and the despised things—and the things that are not—to nullify the things that are,
to Nullify the things that are.
Instead among those that see the gospel and believe what do we have
    1 Corinthians 2:7 NIV
7 No, we declare God’s wisdom, a mystery that has been hidden and that God destined for our glory before time began.
Now we are going to step into a little deeper water here.
God’s wisdom Paul says is a mystery that has been hidden. Wait what? God’s wisdom is hidden? Wait what about proverbs right? We have that book that is not hidden.
We do but I don’t think that is what Paul is talking about here. Here Paul is talking about God’s wisdom isa mystery. ANd this is not the only time this phrase come in Paul’s writing so what does He mean? Let me look at Colossians for a minute-Here Paul writes
    Colossians 2:2 NIV
2 My goal is that they may be encouraged in heart and united in love, so that they may have the full riches of complete understanding, in order that they may know the mystery of God, namely, Christ,
Namely Christ. This mystery that paul is talking about is Christ. As He wrote in Corinthians a few verses back For I resolved to know nothing while I was with expect Christ and him crucified.
    On Screen-not read
    1 Corinthians 2:7 NIV
7 No, we declare God’s wisdom, a mystery that has been hidden and that God destined for our glory before time began.
The gospel , or Christ crucified is this mystery that Paul is declaring. Early on in the Old Testament Christ was not fully revealed it was a mystery, until Christ cam and was revealed at the fullness of time. Now Paul says something I want you really pay attention to.
That plan has always existed. God destined that plan —the plan of the gospel for our glory before time began.
Think about that for a second… lets read that verse again slowly then I will take you through an exercise, then back to the verse. The water is going to deep, just keep swimming...
    1 Corinthians 2:7 NIV
7 No, we declare God’s wisdom, a mystery that has been hidden and that God destined for our glory before time began.
This is what it means Paul preaches the gospel which had been hidden in the Old Testament, but God destined that message for our glory---- even before time began.... woah… let’s do an exercise for a minute.
Take some time with me to think of the most valuable thing you own. Maybe your retirement fund or your house. put an arbitrary number to it.
Jeff Bezos the CEO of Amazon has a net worth is about 184 billion. He makes approximately 2500 every second that is That is almost a 150,000 a minute.
    Jeff Bezo-net worth $184 Billion Makes $2,500/sec
    2,095 billionaires
He can buy every NFL Team. He could buy 30% of the top 100 college endowments That includes Harvard with 38 billion, University of Texas and Yale with 30 billion
Now Jeff Bezos may be the richest man, but there are 2, 095 billionaires in the world. WHile that is a staggering amount of money it is still not all the wealth in the world.
Now zoom pout and look at our planet from space.
    Milky Way- 100 billion stars
    100 billion Galaxies
    1 billion trillion stars- 1,000,000,000,000,000,000,000
Now the earth is just one planet in one solar system orbiting 1 star. In our galaxy alone there are 100 billion stars. Just under Jeff Bezos net worth, but any way 100 billion stars that is an insanely large number
100 billion stars in our Galaxy and about 100 billion galaxies. or about 1 billion trillion stars. that is a 1 with 21 zeros after it.
We cannot even comprehend how large of a number that is and that is stars! Massive balls of fire enormus...
Now God spoke that into existence. God created that. God holds all that together.. think about that. Got it.?
    lets read 1 Cor 2 .7 again
    1 Corinthians 2:7 NIV
7 No, we declare God’s wisdom, a mystery that has been hidden and that God destined for our glory before time began.
God the God that one who spoke 1 billion trillion stars into existence planned before time began to send Jesus for our glory. Before those stars were created the gospel was destined for your glory.
Now in that context hear the gospel for a second.
At some point in your life, you decided that you did not have to follow the rules or did believe or did not adequately respect the God who spoke 1 billion stars into existence. You thought I don’t have to be honest or kind, or pure or whatever. You in some fashion, set aside what you know is right, and did something against that God.
Now, that God knew you were going to do that. Yet he had a plan. He had a plan to bring you to glory even before time began.
Since you or any other human was incapable of being perfect. He came himself. He ---the very same God---took on flesh. stepped out of heaven came to earth, and lived the life you could not live. He died the death that you deserved, He being God the son-suffered the wrath from God father that should have been meant for you -you so that you you could be brought to glory.
Are you seeing the magnitude of this.
    look at the next verse
    1 Corinthians 2:8 NIV
8 None of the rulers of this age understood it, for if they had, they would not have crucified the Lord of glory.
The people who are blinded by this age who don’t understand remember Isaiah 6?
    Isaiah 6:10 NIV
10 Make the heart of this people calloused; make their ears dull and close their eyes. Otherwise they might see with their eyes, hear with their ears, understand with their hearts, and turn and be healed.”
These rulers they don’t understand that if they would they would not have crucified Jesus instead they would have bowed their knee to Him.
    1 Corinthians 2:8 NIV
8 None of the rulers of this age understood it, for if they had, they would not have crucified the Lord of glory.
    1 Corinthians 2:9 NIV
9 However, as it is written: “What no eye has seen, what no ear has heard, and what no human mind has conceived”— the things God has prepared for those who love him—
We cannot even conceive or understand or fathom no human mind can grasp it. The things God has prepared for those who love him. He prepared things in advance he destined us for glory before time began.
We cannot even begin to understand the magnitude of this.
We think of heaven and pots of Gold and puppies running through daisies... Brothers and sisters if what this text says is true the glory of heaven No human mind can conceive the the riches God has prepared for those who love Him.
How do we even begin to understand-Here is where God shows us....
    1 Corinthians 2:10 NIV
10 these are the things God has revealed to us by his Spirit. The Spirit searches all things, even the deep things of God.
These are the things God has revealed to us by HIS spirit-That is the Holy Spirit. The third person of the trinity. We have three persons of the trinity in this passage. The Holy Spirit searches all things even the deep things of God.
Jayne read from John 14 where Jesus explains to the disciples about the Holy Spirit. He says the Holy Spirit will come and convict the world of sin. As the gospel is preached the Holy Sprit convicts you of your sin and draws you repentence ---He opens your eyes and reveals to you this mystery of the Gospel.
Instead of walking alongside of Jesus the Holy Spirit is right here with us. because When you believe the Gospel for the first time and repent of your sins, and turn toward Jesus Christ as the son of God the Holy Spirit fills you. You are filled with the Holy Spirit and He teaches you. He instructs you and shows you.
You don;t all of a sudden all at once have a miraculous understanding of scripture but you begin to grow toward maturity. You begin to see more and more of God, and wonderful mystery of the Gospel, You see how God has saved you for glory. You how his plan was in place even before time began.
Your heart overflows with a love for this God- This God who endures so much for you, and you are drawn pulled toward Him you cannot help but fall to your knees and confess your sins to this mighty God, and ask Him for forgiveness You see Jesus as God in the flesh, and you humbly and graciously turn toward Him and give Him your life.
If you are seeing God today in a new light for the first time turn to God in prayer right now.
And I will leave you with verse from 2 Cor
    2 Corinthians 4:6 NIV
6 For God, who said, “Let light shine out of darkness,” made his light shine in our hearts to give us the light of the knowledge of God’s glory displayed in the face of Christ.
