- Sermon Outline: Hebrews 10:11-25 – “Christ's Perfect Sacrifice: Our Unshakable Confidence”Key Verse: “But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” – Romans 5:8IntroductionImagine visiting a prison, seeing people behind bars, only to find out they are free but they don’t know it. They’ve been released, but they continue to sit, bound by chains that no longer exist. This may seem hard to believe, yet spiritually, it’s how we sometimes live. Christ has set us free, yet we can find ourselves weighed down by guilt, shame, or fear. Today, we turn to Hebrews 10:11-25 to see the reality of Christ’s perfect sacrifice and what it means for us.Purpose: Hebrews 10:11-25 reassures us of Jesus’ perfect, once-for-all sacrifice and challenges us to respond with confidence, hope, and a life that lifts up others.I. Christ’s Sacrifice: Once and for All (Hebrews 10:11-14)Our passage today continues on with the thoughts of last week, as a reminder we seen last week how Jesus has entered as our high priest, the one mediator between God and man. Having accomplished once for all the atoning sacrifice of his own blood for the forgiveness of all our sins.
Hebrews 10:11 ESV And every priest stands daily at his service, offering repeatedly the same sacrifices, which can never take away sins. The priest job in the Old Testament was to offer the sacrifice repeatedly. If you remember back from the Exodus story as they arrived at Mount Sinai Moses went up the mountain for 40 days receiving from God the instructions for how the people were to organize, the Levites, the tribe from which Moses and his brother Aaron, were decedents from, their duty was to be priest, mediators between God and man. Offering the sacrifices, over and over because they were only able to cover the sins, never fully take them away.Hebrews 10:12 ESV But when Christ had offered for all time a single sacrifice for sins, he sat down at the right hand of God,Jesus sacrifice fully takes away the sins, not just merely covering them over. Now that his finished work has been accomplished on the cross and through the resurrection we have hope. Jesus has now sit down at the right hand of God, not a physical location, but a place of power and honor. This is what we state in our creed, that his at the right hand of God, or in other words equal with God, being the same nature as God, yet distinct in person. One God, one Lord and one baptism.Hebrews 10:13–14 ESV waiting from that time until his enemies should be made a footstool for his feet. For by a single offering he has perfected for all time those who are being sanctified.Jesus now waits as he told his disciples when he ascended into heaven that the same way he went he would also return. Then as we read last week in Hebrews 9:28Hebrews 9:28 ESV so Christ, having been offered once to bear the sins of many, will appear a second time, not to deal with sin but to save those who are eagerly waiting for him.He awaits that day the the Father alone knows, when he will return in glory to judge both the living and the dead, and this time not dealing with the problem of sin, but of a final judgement where some will be raised to everlasting life and some to eternal condemnation. When the enemies of God will be made a footstool for JesusThe writer of Hebrews paints a powerful contrast. The old covenant required daily sacrifices by priests who stood as they worked, showing that their task was never finished. It was an ongoing, wearying effort because animal sacrifices could only cover sins temporarily. Then, Jesus came—the perfect priest who didn’t just offer a sacrifice; He was the sacrifice. His work was so complete, so final, that after He offered Himself, He sat down at the right hand of God. No more sacrifices were needed.II. Draw Near to God with Confidence (Hebrews 10:19-22)Theologically speaking this is all great and we know it from scripture, in many place Jesus has talked about, but the question we have to ask is so what, what does this mean for us. Skipping ahead a bit this is where the writer of Hebrews then goes.Hebrews 10:19–20 ESV Therefore, brothers, since we have confidence to enter the holy places by the blood of Jesus, by the new and living way that he opened for us through the curtain, that is, through his flesh,We now have confidence an assurance for we have been saved by grace through faith in Christ, who is says now entered the holy places by his blood. The curtain that once removed us, kept us separated from God, has been removed, torn from the top down, removed by God himself through Jesus victory over death and the grave. That means we no longer need a priest to stand in between for us, making sacrifices, giving offerings, and teaching us what God says. We have Jesus, we have the word made flesh, we can read the words for ourselves. then through the power of the Holy Spirit, through teachers, through study we have the words of life and that is Jesus.Hebrews 10:21–22 ESV and since we have a great priest over the house of God, let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, with our hearts sprinkled clean from an evil conscience and our bodies washed with pure water.1 Peter 3:21 ESV Baptism, which corresponds to this, now saves you, not as a removal of dirt from the body but as an appeal to God for a good conscience, through the resurrection of Jesus Christ,We have been washed clean by the blood of Christ, through our participation in his death and resurrection in the waters of baptism as Romans 6:3 says:Romans 6:3 ESV Do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? We have confidence and full assurance that we are saved, we are being saved and that when Jesus returns we will be judged not on the basis of our good works, nor our sin, but solely on the basis of Jesus Christ alone. Through is all availing sacrifice of his body, and blood, given and shed for you.Illustration: Like a child running to a parent without hesitation, we’re invited to approach God boldly, knowing we are loved and accepted.III. Holding Fast to Hope in a Faithful God (Hebrews 10:23)Now our confidence is this:Hebrews 10:23 ESV Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for he who promised is faithful.Confession a word we often use, but not really talk about a lot and simply is this, a statement of what we believe. It relates to Romans 10:9Romans 10:9 ESV because, if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. We confess with our mouths, and believe with our hearts you will be saved. Belief is the necessity and confession, baptism all these things are signs of that belief, they go with that belief, they correspond to it.The write of Hebrews is emphasizing this we hold fast to this confession, this belief, for it is our hope, and that hope keeps us from wavering, for we know that he, that is God is faithful and all that he promises will bare fruit, in that last day.So we wait, eagerly wait for that day when all will be fulfilled, when Jesus will return, and we shall live with him forever in paradise.Illustration: Consider a climber anchored to the mountain by a rope. Our anchor is God’s faithfulness, steady through life’s storms.IV. Building Up Each Other in Love (Hebrews 10:24-25)Hebrews 10:24 ESV And let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works,Finally we know that once we have a clear understanding of salvation, that we are saved by grace through faith in the person and work of Jesus Christ, that what results of this is also knowing that because we have been forgiven, we forgive, because we have hope, we can stir up one another, encourage one another, to love and good works. Again this is not out of mere obligation, to merit something before God, but out of the love we experience in the cost that it took for Jesus to bear the cross, to carry our sins, to forgive the unforgivable. We see all that much more how easy it is to truly love God, and like it love our neighbor as ourselves.Hebrews 10:25 ESV not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day drawing near. This one right here, I remember several years ago working with someone on a job and the topic came around about religion and he asked my do you have to go to church. I said to him, oh that is where you are mistaken I am not obligated to go to church, I want to go to church, to be with fellow believers, for it is there we encourage one another, where we receive the forgiveness of our sins, where we partake of the sacraments, where we learn together and edify one another. Our meeting together isn’t something we should neglect, but it is also something we should be remind that it isn’t out of obligation but out of love for one another that we meet together. It isn’t hard to look around at the world and see that things have gotten crazy. Even in all of this it should reminds that each and everyday we are drawing nearer to that day, whether we live to see it or not, it should remind us the importance of it all, that we are called to share the gospel to a hurting broken world, and no single person is called to do it alone. We together as the church, this is our responsibility, to teach our children, to encourage one another in the faith, to remind us of our salvation that is accomplish through Jesus and that we have nothing to fear in this world, for Jesus has overcome it. He has won the victory, and all we are called to do now, is live in that belief, knowing that we are saved, and share it with others.ConclusionIn closing, Hebrews 10:11-25 reassures us that Christ’s perfect sacrifice has opened the way to a confident relationship with God. We can draw near, hold fast to hope, and encourage one another. Romans 5:8 reminds us of the deep, sacrificial love that fuels it all.Jesus’ once-for-all sacrifice invites us to live in assurance, hope, and active love for one another. Romans 5:8 reminds us that this love met us at our worst, proving we are wholly accepted by God. Amen Hebrews 10:11ESV
