- Part 1 of the series “Living the Resurrected Life”Main Idea:The resurrection of Jesus is not just a past event—it is the power that is at work in every believer, enabling us to live victorious lives in Christ.Introduction:Timmy and Sarah Discover Resurrection PowerTimmy and Sarah loved visiting Grandpa's farm. There was always an adventure waiting. One bright Saturday morning, as they raced out toward the old barn, they saw Grandpa carefully working on his ancient tractor."What's wrong, Grandpa?" Timmy asked.Grandpa wiped his hands and smiled. "Well, she's got no power today. Battery’s dead. Without power, this tractor isn't going anywhere."Sarah looked worried. "Can you fix it?""Of course," Grandpa chuckled warmly, "It just needs a jump-start—fresh power from another battery. Then it'll be good as new."After Grandpa connected some cables, the old tractor suddenly roared back to life. Sarah clapped excitedly. "It worked!"Grandpa nodded. "Just needed some new power. You know, it reminds me of the resurrection."Timmy and Sarah exchanged curious glances. "The resurrection?" Timmy asked. "How?""Well," Grandpa began thoughtfully, "just like the tractor had no life without power, our lives can feel empty, tired, or stuck. But when Jesus rose from the dead, He gave us access to that same powerful life—the resurrection power.""You mean," Sarah said thoughtfully, "like the battery gave the tractor new life, Jesus’ resurrection gives us power to live differently?""Exactly," Grandpa smiled. "We don’t have to be stuck in sadness, fear, or sin. With Jesus, we have the power to live joyfully, bravely, and in victory every day."Timmy nodded. "So, we’re kind of like that tractor. Without Jesus, we’re stuck. But with His power, we can move again."Grandpa put an arm around each of them. "That’s exactly right! The resurrection isn’t just something that happened a long time ago. It’s Jesus giving us fresh power every day."As they walked back to the house, Timmy whispered to Sarah, "I'm glad Jesus gives us resurrection power. It’s way better than any battery!"Sarah giggled, agreeing wholeheartedly. They both felt excited, knowing they could live each day powered by the resurrection life of Jesus. The resurrection of Jesus Christ is the cornerstone of the Christian faith.Without it, our message loses its meaning, our hope fades, and our faith becomes empty. The Apostle Paul put it plainly in
1 Corinthians 15:14 NASB95 14 and if Christ has not been raised, then our preaching is vain, your faith also is vain. The cross was where the penalty of sin was paid, the resurrection is where the power of sin was broken. It's not just that Jesus died for our sins—that alone would be a tragedy. It’s that He rose again, victorious over death, confirming that everything He said and did was true.Because of the resurrection:We know sin has been defeated.2. We have hope beyond the grave.3. We have access to the same power that raised Christ from the dead.Today, we begin a journey into what it means to live the resurrected lifenot just believing in a past event, but walking in the present power that flows from an empty tomb.Let's discover how resurrection power is available not only for someday in heaven, but for today—right now.Transition to the main point:The same power that raised Jesus from the dead is available to us today.I. The Resurrection Power is at Work in UsRomans 8:11 NASB95 11 But if the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, He who raised Christ Jesus from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through His Spirit who dwells in you.The resurrection is not just historical—it's present.Paul speaks of the Holy Spirit’s role in resurrecting Jesus and how that same Spirit lives in us, giving us life. When the Spirit lives in us,He empowers us to live in victory over sin, sickness, and circumstances.Illustration:Rosaria Butterfield was a tenured professor of English and Women’s Studies at Syracuse University. An outspoken atheist and LGBTQ activist, she was known for her sharp intellect and deep criticism of Christianity, which she considered dangerous and anti-intellectual. She described Christians as “unthinking” and the Bible as “an outdated, oppressive book.”In the late 1990s, Rosaria wrote an article in a local newspaper that critiqued the religious right, and in response, she received an outpouring of mail. Among the hate mail and fan letters was one quiet, thoughtful letter from a local pastor named Ken Smith. He challenged her thinking, but in love—not with arguments, but with sincere questions. That letter led to a friendship. Rosaria and her partner were invited to dinner. What followed were two years of open conversation, deep questions, prayer, and love from a Christian couple who simply lived out the gospel.Through reading the Bible in depth—out of curiosity at first—Rosaria encountered the resurrected Christ. The Holy Spirit began to break down her intellectual pride and emotional resistance. Over time, she came to a place of repentance, surrendering her life fully to Jesus. Her transformation was radical and costly. She left her old life, including her identity and career path, to follow Christ. Today, she is a passionate advocate for biblical truth, hospitality, and gospel-centered living. She shares her story not to condemn, but to show the love and power of Christ to meet anyone, anywhere.Rosaria later wrote:“The word of God got to be bigger inside me than I. My own identity became less interesting. And I started to believe that the Bible was true.”Her life is a living testimony of 2 Corinthians 4:6:“For God, who said, ‘Let light shine out of darkness,’ made His light shine in our hearts to give us the light of the knowledge of God's glory displayed in the face of Christ.”Application:As believers we have access to resurrection power today! We are not bound by the limitations of our human nature. We are empowered by the same Spirit that raised Jesus from the dead.II. The Resurrection Brings Us New LifeRomans 6:4 NASB95 4 Therefore we have been buried with Him through baptism into death, so that as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, so we too might walk in newness of life.Ezekiel 36:26 NASB95 26 “Moreover, I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit within you; and I will remove the heart of stone from your flesh and give you a heart of flesh.Galatians 2:20 NASB95 20 “I have been crucified with Christ; and it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me; and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself up for me.Colossians 3:9–10 NASB95 9 Do not lie to one another, since you laid aside the old self with its evil practices, 10 and have put on the new self who is being renewed to a true knowledge according to the image of the One who created him—2 Corinthians 5:17 NASB95 17 Therefore if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creature; the old things passed away; behold, new things have come. When we give our life to Jesus, He makes all things newthis is the biggest challenge for new beleivers. The Old life keeps calling them back into the same habits, desires, practices. But its helpful to know:The resurrection power is the power of new life. The power that raised Jesus is the power of victory, healing, and transformation.Christ's resurrection signifies newness, breaking the power of sin and death in our lives. We see Jesus did this during His time as a manIllustration:Lazarus, a dear friend of Jesus, had fallen seriously ill. His sisters, Mary and Martha, sent word to Jesus, hoping He would come quickly to heal him. But instead of rushing to Bethany, Jesus stayed where He was for two more days. He told His disciples, “This sickness will not end in death… it is for God’s glory.”By the time Jesus arrived, Lazarus had already been dead four days and buried in a tomb. Grief filled the air. Martha, heartbroken but full of faith, said, “Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died… but even now I know God will give you whatever you ask.”Jesus replied, “I am the resurrection and the life. The one who believes in me will live, even though they die.”Moved by the sorrow of Mary, the crowd, and the reality of death, Jesus wept—showing His deep compassion. Then, standing before the tomb, Jesus prayed and called out in a loud voice, “Lazarus, come out!”To the astonishment of all, Lazarus walked out, still wrapped in grave clothes—alive!Application:Just as Jesus was raised to life, we are spiritually raised with Him, leaving behind our old selves and embracing the newness of life in Christ. This fact empowers us to live differently, overcoming the effects of sin and walking in freedom.III. Experiencing the Power of Resurrection DailyPhilippians 3:10 NASB95 10 that I may know Him and the power of His resurrection and the fellowship of His sufferings, being conformed to His death; We are called to live in the resurrection power every day.Paul expresses his desire to know Christ and the power of His resurrection, emphasizing the ongoing, daily experience of resurrection power in the life of the believer. The resurrection of Jesus wasn’t just a one-time eventit unleashed a living power that continues to work in us today. Our starting verses Romans 8:11 says,Romans 8:11 NASB95 11 But if the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, He who raised Christ Jesus from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through His Spirit who dwells in you. That means the same Spirit that brought Jesus out of the grave is living in us,empowering us to face life with victory. Here’s how that looks in real life:1. Overcoming FearResurrection power speaks directly to our fears—of the unknown, failure, rejection, or even death.Because Jesus conquered death, we don’t have to live in fear of what’s ahead. When we feel anxiety rising, we can pray,“Jesus, You rose from the grave. I trust You to carry me through this.”Example: A person fearful about finances prays with boldness, knowing their Provider is alive and active.2 Timothy 1:7 NASB95 7 For God has not given us a spirit of timidity, but of power and love and discipline.2. Standing Against TemptationWe are not powerless when temptation comesrather we are filled with resurrection strength.Resurrection means we’ve died to sin and are alive in ChristRomans 6:11 NASB95 11 Even so consider yourselves to be dead to sin, but alive to God in Christ Jesus. When tempted, we can say:“That’s not who I am anymore. I’m a new creation.”Example:A believer tempted by addiction or lust speaks Scripture aloud, invites the Holy Spirit, and chooses righteousness—drawing on God's power, not willpower.Romans 8:26 NASB95 26 In the same way the Spirit also helps our weakness; for we do not know how to pray as we should, but the Spirit Himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words;3. Facing Health StrugglesEven in sickness, resurrection power is realsometimes for healing, always for hope and endurance.Jesus still heals, and we can pray boldly for breakthroughJames 5:14–16 NASB95 14 Is anyone among you sick? Then he must call for the elders of the church and they are to pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord; 15 and the prayer offered in faith will restore the one who is sick, and the Lord will raise him up, and if he has committed sins, they will be forgiven him. 16 Therefore, confess your sins to one another, and pray for one another so that you may be healed. The effective prayer of a righteous man can accomplish much. But even when healing tarries, we know this body is not the endeternal life is ours.Example:Someone with chronic illness worships in pain, declaring,“My Redeemer lives, and He is with me.”2 Corinthians 4:16 NASB95 16 Therefore we do not lose heart, but though our outer man is decaying, yet our inner man is being renewed day by day.Resurrection power meanshope in hardship, strength in weakness, victory in battle. It means you’re never alone, never powerless, and never without a futurebecause the One who overcame the grave lives in you.Application:The resurrection is not a one-time event but a daily experience.Ask:Are we walking in the power of His resurrection? Are there areas of your life where they need to experience the resurrection power of Christ (e.g., relationships, struggles, sin). Conclusion:Ephesians 1:17–23 NASB95 17 that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give to you a spirit of wisdom and of revelation in the knowledge of Him. 18 I pray that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened, so that you will know what is the hope of His calling, what are the riches of the glory of His inheritance in the saints, 19 and what is the surpassing greatness of His power toward us who believe. These are in accordance with the working of the strength of His might 20 which He brought about in Christ, when He raised Him from the dead and seated Him at His right hand in the heavenly places, 21 far above all rule and authority and power and dominion, and every name that is named, not only in this age but also in the one to come. 22 And He put all things in subjection under His feet, and gave Him as head over all things to the church, 23 which is His body, the fullness of Him who fills all in all.The same power that raised Jesus from the dead is available to us today, empowering us to live victorious lives.lean into the power of the resurrection in your everyday lives. You are not powerless but are filled with resurrection power through the Holy Spirit.Closing Prayer:Pray that the resurrection power would be a tangible reality in the lives of the congregation, enabling them to walk in victory, newness of life, and the fullness of God's promises. 1 Corinthians 15.14NASB95
