- Pentecost 2025I want to begin by thanking each of you for being a part of the service today.Today we celebrate Pentecost SundayI’ve been praying that you’ve been preparing yourself for what Holy Spirit wants to do in you today.I’m going to ask everyone to stand up, put out you hands ready to receive, and join with me as we Pray this prayerPrayer“Holy Spirit, I open myself up to You today, Do in me whatever you want to do, so I can fulfill the will of the Father on the earth. Raise my expectations, increase my capacity for your Love. Speak to and through me today!” AmenIntroTo provide you a background, Pentecost that we are celebrating today goes back thousands of years. Even before Jesus came to the earthPentecost in the Old Testament (Feast of Weeks)In the Old Testament, Pentecost is known as the Feast of Weeks (Shavuot), celebrated 50 days after Passover. It was one of the major pilgrimage festivals where Israelites brought the firstfruits of the wheat harvest to the Lord
Exodus 34:22 NASB95 22 “You shall celebrate the Feast of Weeks, that is, the first fruits of the wheat harvest, and the Feast of Ingathering at the turn of the year.Leviticus 23:15–21 NASB95 15 ‘You shall also count for yourselves from the day after the sabbath, from the day when you brought in the sheaf of the wave offering; there shall be seven complete sabbaths. 16 ‘You shall count fifty days to the day after the seventh sabbath; then you shall present a new grain offering to the Lord. 17 ‘You shall bring in from your dwelling places two loaves of bread for a wave offering, made of two-tenths of an ephah; they shall be of a fine flour, baked with leaven as first fruits to the Lord. 18 ‘Along with the bread you shall present seven one year old male lambs without defect, and a bull of the herd and two rams; they are to be a burnt offering to the Lord, with their grain offering and their drink offerings, an offering by fire of a soothing aroma to the Lord. 19 ‘You shall also offer one male goat for a sin offering and two male lambs one year old for a sacrifice of peace offerings. 20 ‘The priest shall then wave them with the bread of the first fruits for a wave offering with two lambs before the Lord; they are to be holy to the Lord for the priest. 21 ‘On this same day you shall make a proclamation as well; you are to have a holy convocation. You shall do no laborious work. It is to be a perpetual statute in all your dwelling places throughout your generations.Pentecost commemorated God’s provisionits also associated with the giving of the Law at Mount Sinai, which occurred around the same time after the Exodus. So, Pentecost in the Old Testament was a time ofthanksgiving, covenant remembrance, and joyful offering, gathering togethersetting the stage for the New Testament Pentecost, where God gave the Holy Spirit—His new covenant law written on heartsJeremiah 31:33 NASB95 33 “But this is the covenant which I will make with the house of Israel after those days,” declares the Lord, “I will put My law within them and on their heart I will write it; and I will be their God, and they shall be My people.Theme Verse:Acts 2:1–4Acts 2:1–4 NASB95 1 When the day of Pentecost had come, they were all together in one place. 2 And suddenly there came from heaven a noise like a violent rushing wind, and it filled the whole house where they were sitting. 3 And there appeared to them tongues as of fire distributing themselves, and they rested on each one of them. 4 And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit was giving them utterance. Its important to know, this was part of God’s divine plan from the very begining. After Adam and eve sinned and were kicked out of the gardenGod’s plan of salvation was put into motionto restore His creation back to HimselfFrom Adam to the Baptism of the Holy Spirit: God's Restorative PlanCreation & Fall (Genesis 1–3): God created humanity in His image for relationship with Him.But through Adam's sin, that relationship was broken—sin and death entered the world, separating people from God's presence.Promise of Redemption: Even in the curse, God gave a promise (Genesis 3:15) of a future seed who would crush the serpent's head—foretelling Jesus, the Redeemer.Covenants and Prophets: God chose Abraham, Israel, and the prophets to prepare the way. Through the Law and sacrifices, He pointed to the need for a perfect Savior and the hope of a new heart (Ezekiel 36:26–27).Jesus the Messiah: Jesus, the Son of God, came to fulfill the Law, live sinlessly, and die on the cross to atone for humanity's sin. His resurrection brought victory over death and restored access to the Father.Ascension and the Promise of the Spirit: Before ascending, Jesus promised the Holy Spirit would come to empower believers (John 14:16–17; Acts 1:8).This is where many beleivers stop, for whatever reason they reject Holy Spirit’s work in their livesthey are content with doing it under their own strength and understanding,I don’t know about you, but My own strength and understanding is NOT good enough.I need the Holy Spirits power in my LifeI really don’t understand how any believer can manage without it?I was baptised in the Holy Spirit when I was a child, even before I was a teenager.....I need Holy Spirit to do the will of the FatherI can’t do it alone...I need His help!God is fully aware of this and that’s why Jesus told His disciples to go and wait for the Holy Spirit to come upon themThen comes PentecostPentecost – Baptism of the Holy Spirit (Acts 2): Fifty days after Jesus' resurrection, the Holy Spirit was poured out on the disciples. This marked the birth of the Church and the beginning of God’s restored presence living within His people—empowering them to live holy lives and share the gospel to the ends of the earth.Let’s discuss some simple truth that will help you understand what Pentecost is alll about....I. THE PROMISE OF THE BAPTISMActs 1:8 NASB95 8 but you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be My witnesses both in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and even to the remotest part of the earth.”A. The Holy Spirit Was Promised by JesusThe Spirit would dwell in usJohn 14:16–17 NASB95 16 “I will ask the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may be with you forever; 17 that is the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it does not see Him or know Him, but you know Him because He abides with you and will be in you.Luke 24:49 NASB95 49 “And behold, I am sending forth the promise of My Father upon you; but you are to stay in the city until you are clothed with power from on high.”B. Baptism Is distinct from IndwellingIndwelling:happens at salvationJohn 20:19–22 NASB95 19 So when it was evening on that day, the first day of the week, and when the doors were shut where the disciples were, for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood in their midst and said to them, “Peace be with you.” 20 And when He had said this, He showed them both His hands and His side. The disciples then rejoiced when they saw the Lord. 21 So Jesus said to them again, “Peace be with you; as the Father has sent Me, I also send you.” 22 And when He had said this, He breathed on them and said to them, “Receive the Holy Spirit. We talked about this a few weeks ago.Every beleiver has the Holy SpiritWhen we believe, the Holy Spirit comes and “dwells” within us.bringing our spirit to life....remember the story of Nicodemus....we must be born again. But what we are talking about today is the next stepBaptismBaptism: empowerment for service and witnessActs 2:4, Acts 10:44–46This is what distiguishes us from some of our fellow belivers of differnent denominationsWe beleive the Bible teaches Indwelling and Baptism are distinct events that ever beleiver should embraceC. God’s Desire is for All to Be Fillednot just indwelt...Acts 2:39 NASB95 39 “For the promise is for you and your children and for all who are far off, as many as the Lord our God will call to Himself.”We are the “far off” ones Jesus is referring to.Not just by location, but even time itselfWe can say this because God has called each one of you.How do I know this, You here today! So if the Baptism, is distinct from the indwelling and God wants all of His children to be Baptised in Holy Spirit what is ...II. THE PURPOSE OF THE BAPTISM of Holy SpiritActs 1:8 NASB95 8 but you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be My witnesses both in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and even to the remotest part of the earth.”The Primary reason Jesus gives for the need to be Baptises in Holy Spirit is to be His witnessA. Empowerment for WitnessingBoldness to preachPeter in Acts 2 vs Peter in John 18)Testifying with signs and wondersWe also see this preaching was backed up by signs and wonders.displaying for all to see this was not just an invention of menbut instead knowing God is in this!Acts 4:31–33 NASB95 31 And when they had prayed, the place where they had gathered together was shaken, and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak the word of God with boldness. 32 And the congregation of those who believed were of one heart and soul; and not one of them claimed that anything belonging to him was his own, but all things were common property to them. 33 And with great power the apostles were giving testimony to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus, and abundant grace was upon them all.Another reason for the Baptism of Holy Spirit...B. Spiritual Gifts Released1 Corinthians 12:7 NASB95 7 But to each one is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good.Tongues, interpretation, prophecy, healing, miracles, discernmentI could go on and on,Is vital for us to realize, these “gifts” are tools for Kingdom missionGod gives us what we need to do what He’s calling us to doThe problem for many beleivers today, is that they try to build the Kingdom of God using their own resources.instead of partnering with Holy Spirit.another function of the Holy Spirits baptism is...C. Sanctification and Inner TransformationGalatians 5:22–23 NASB95 22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law.D. Repeated and OngoingThey were all filled again…Acts 4:31 NASB95 31 And when they had prayed, the place where they had gathered together was shaken, and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak the word of God with boldness.Be being filled (continuous action)The fruit of the Spirit as evidence of ongoing infillingasEphesians 5:18 NASB95 18 And do not get drunk with wine, for that is dissipation, but be filled with the Spirit,Its not just a one and done kind of thing.rather we are commanded to be continually filled with Holy Spirtand that brings us to the....III. THE PATTERN OF BAPTISM of HOLY SPIRITActs 2:1 NASB95 1 When the day of Pentecost had come, they were all together in one place.A. UnityGathered in one accord, praying (Acts 1:14)one place.....one of the important reason why its so important for us to gather togetherbut its not good enough to just gather together.that happens everwhereB.ExpectationHunger always precedes the outpouringthe person may not know what they are hungering for,but the hunger is presentC. Suddenly and SupernaturallySo they gather together and pray ....Acts 2:2 NASB95 2 And suddenly there came from heaven a noise like a violent rushing wind, and it filled the whole house where they were sitting.God initiates, but believers respond in faithI believe the primary reason we have not seen the outpouring as in days past, is because we have not followed the pattern of Acts chapter 2.The 120 believers were in the upper room for about 10 days between Jesus’ ascension and the Day of Pentecost.10 days the gathered together and prayed to receive what Jesus had promised. How many beleivers would be willing to do this today?many beleivers can even set aside a few hours every week to seek after God as a community.Yes we all have our reasons, but one thing is certain....You always make time to do the things that are important to you!During those 10 days, Acts 1:14 tells us:“They all joined together constantly in prayer…”For the beleivers who walked and listened to Jesus during His years of ministry on the earth as a manIt was a time ofunity, expectation, and spiritual preparation, resulting in the outpouring of the Holy Spirit in Acts 2.Spiritual PreparationMy question today, is not to guilt you, but rather to set you freeHow are you preparing for the next major move of God on the earthDo you hunger after it?Do you desire for Holy Spirit to move in your life like He did in the book of Acts?pause..IV. THE RESPONSE TO THE INFILLINGActs 2:37 NASB95 37 Now when they heard this, they were pierced to the heart, and said to Peter and the rest of the apostles, “Brethren, what shall we do?”What shall we do?Peter answers them...and the answer holds true todayA. Repent and Be Baptized (Acts 2:38)A posture of surrender and readinessOpen hearts receive the fullness of GodB. Receive by FaithLuke 11:13 NASB95 13 “If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask Him?”Not earned, but received as a giftC. Be continually filled, every opportunity you get ask Holy Spirit to fill youDaily dependency, not a one-time eventD. Walk in the SpiritGalatians 5:25 NASB95 25 If we live by the Spirit, let us also walk by the Spirit. Conclusion:The infilling of the Holy Spirit is not optional for effective Christian living—it is essential.Pentecost wasn’t just a historical moment; it’s an ongoing invitation. God desires to fill every believer with power, presence, and purpose.Call to Action:Invite the congregation to pray for a fresh infilling.Create space at the altar or in small groups for laying on of hands, prophetic words, and waiting on the Spirit.Encourage ongoing pursuit of the Spirit daily.
