- “Well Done, Good and Faithful Servant”A Funeral Sermon for Rev. Stan LagoreScripture Reading: 2 Timothy 4:7–8 Psalm 116:15 John 14:1–6IntroductionToday, we gather with mixed emotions. There is grief, because we have lost someone we deeply love. There is gratitude, because we were given the gift of knowing him.And there is hope—solid, unshakeable hope—because of Jesus Christ. We are here to honor the life of Rev. Stan Lagore: a husband, a father, a grandfather, a brother, a pastor, a friend and above all, a servant of God.Funerals are sacred moments. They cause us to pause. They pull us out of the busyness of life and force us to consider what truly matters.Scripture tells us in Ecclesiastes that it is better to go to the house of mourning than to the house of feasting, because it causes the living to take it to heart.Today is not only about remembering Stan—it is also about reflecting on our own lives, our own faith, and our own eternity.A Life Lived with PurposeThe Apostle Paul writes in 2 Timothy 4:7:
2 Timothy 4:7 NASB95 7 I have fought the good fight, I have finished the course, I have kept the faith;Few verses describe Stan Lagore more accurately.Stan did not live a perfect life—but he lived a faithful one.He understood something many never grasp: that life is not about comfort, recognition, or success by worldly standards.Life is about obedience. It is about faithfulness. It is about finishing well.Stan was a man who answered the call of God—not just once, but again and again. He served when it was easy, and he served when it was costly. He served when people noticed, and he served when no one did.Being a Pastor is not glamorous. It is long hours, quiet sacrifices, unseen prayers, and carrying burdens for others.Stan carried those burdens willingly. He shepherded people, preached truth, prayed for the sick, taught the Word, and stayed faithful through seasons of joy and seasons of hardship. And today, we can say with confidence: he finished his race.A Faith That Shaped GenerationsStan’s legacy is not limited to sermons preached or churches built. His legacy lives on in people. It lives on in his wife Sharon, his daughters Shirley, Sandra, and Shauna, his grandchildren, Tyler, Ashlyn, Cassidy, Naomi, McKenna, Mathais, Dylan, Juliahis extended family, and the countless lives he touched through ministry.most of you here know what I’m talking about.Stan had a profound impact on your life. that’s why your here. You are his legacyTrue legacy is not measured by titles or achievementsit is measured by what is left behindby what remains when someone is gone.Stan modeled a faith that was steady, sincere, and rooted in God’s Word.consistent is a word I would use to describe StanHe developed habbits and stook with them almost to a faultOne thing about Stan, he resisted changeHow many can testify to thatHe was most certainly a creature of habitOne thing you should know. is I Love changeI thrive on change. I get bored really easy. Now After working along side Stan for 31 years I learned a few secrets.1st of which Whenever I thought we should change something in the church. I could never come out an just say“we should do this”… fill in the blankthe answer would always be noI repected that, He was in chargeBut what I learned to do,was to drop a suggestion by asking a question.do that a few times over weeks or months.then all of a sudden he would come up with an idea that we should change something.an idea I would fully supportthe problem is it didn’t take him too long to figure my tactics out.and eventually he began to trust my desire for changeBut one thing is certain. He showed what it meant to walk with God over a lifetimenot just in moments of passion, but in daily perseverance.Psalm 116:15 tells us:Psalm 116:15 NASB95 15 Precious in the sight of the Lord Is the death of His godly ones. This does not mean death itself is preciousbut that the life of the one who has walked with God is deeply valued by Him.Heaven does not see today as a loss.Heaven sees today as a homecoming. Our Hope in ChristJesus said in John 14:1–3:John 14:1–3 NASB95 1 “Do not let your heart be troubled; believe in God, believe also in Me. 2 “In My Father’s house are many dwelling places; if it were not so, I would have told you; for I go to prepare a place for you. 3 “If I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you to Myself, that where I am, there you may be also. Our comfort today is not rooted in memories alone. Our comfort is rooted in the promise of Christ.Stan’s hope was not in his works. It was not in his ministry record. It was not in his reputation. His hope was in Jesus. And that is why today, even in our sorrow, we grieve with hope. The Christian faith does not deny griefbut it transforms it.We mourn, but we do not mourn as those who have no hope.Death is not the end. It is a doorway. For those who are in Christ, death is not goodbyeit is see you again.A Moment for ReflectionMoments like this confront us with eternal questions:What have I done with my life? What am I building my hope on?Where will I spend eternity? No sermon, no matter how heartfelt, can answer those questions for you.Only you can.Its a personal decsion that only you can make for yourselfStan’s life points us toward those questionsnot in fear, but in invitation. And this brings us to the most important truth we can share today. The Roman Road: God’s Invitation to SalvationIf Stan were standing here today,he would not want this moment to be about him alone. He would want it to point to Jesus. He would want every person here to know that they can have the same assurance, the same peace, the same hope he had.The Bible lays out God’s plan of salvation clearly. One of the simplest ways to understand it is through what is often called the Roman Road, taken from the Book of Romans.1. We All Need SalvationRomans 3:23 says:Romans 3:23 NASB95 23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,Every one of us—pastors included—has fallen short.sin literally means to “miss the mark”its an archery term. When you draw the bow and release the arrow.but then you miss the target you are aiming at.the word for the is sin.It means we don’t measure up to the standard set before usbut we’re all in the same boatMother Theresa, Billy graham, Even Pastor Stanwe don’t measure up to the plans God has for us!Sin is not just what we do or don’t do;its also our condition apart from God.No one earns heaven by being good enough.A humans greatest righteousness is descibed as filthy rags to GodSo we’ve all sinned, we’ve all missed the mark, we’ve all come up shortso what?Well that2. Sin Has a Costlook at is this way. if a hockey player breaks a rule. He has to go spend some time in the penalty boxinterestingly also know as the sin binwell what is the cost of our sin?Romans 6:23 NASB95 23 For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. The cost of sin is deathDeath is not just physicalit is spiritual separation from God.But notice the contrast: wages are earned; a gift is freely given.we earn death, but life is given freelySo what have we determined.Everyone Sinsand everybody owes their life to that sinwe all have to die because of our sin!intersting to note Death never entered the world until adam and eve sinned in the garden.death was never part of God’s original planSo were screwed. feast drink, for tomorrow we die!not so fast!3. God Demonstrated His LoveRomans 5:8 NASB95 8 But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.God did not wait for us to clean ourselves up.Jesus went to the cross in our brokenness,in our sin,in our need.again back to the hockey analogy. when a goalie get a penalty, someone on the ice has to go to the penalty box for them. That’s what Jesus did for you and meWe deserve the box, but he took our place! So how we we get in on this? How do we get Jesus to pay for our sins?to take our place?4. Salvation Is Received by FaithRomans 10:9–10 NASB95 9 that if you confess with your mouth Jesus as Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved; 10 for with the heart a person believes, resulting in righteousness, and with the mouth he confesses, resulting in salvation.Salvation is not about church attendance or religious activity. It is about surrender—trusting Jesus as Lord and Savior. We call this the ABC of the gospelA- acknowledge you made mistakes (s)B-Believe that Jesus paid the price for your sinC-Confess Jesus as your Lord and saviourwhat does that mean?It means He’s the bossyou do what He wants you to do.now that may sound unwanted at first. But who would you rather have in control of your lifeyou a finite person with limited knowledge and even more limited understanding.Or the creator of heaven and earth?great news. You get to decideI’ve made my decisionand many people here have made their decision.Stan made his decsions and now he gets to reap the rewardsthe choice is do you want to be on control of your lifeor do your what to hand control of your life over:to the one who created youthe one who know you better than you know yourselfthe one who knows the future, and holds the future in His handsthe one who loves you enough to send his only son to die in your placeI be remise not to tell you the next part5. Assurance of SalvationRomans 10:13 promises:Romans 10:13 NASB95 13 for “Whoever will call on the name of the Lord will be saved.”Not some. Not most. Everyone.its a guarenteea guarntee that is backed by the creator of the UniverseAn Invitation TodayToday, as we honor Stan’s life, the greatest way to honor his legacy is to respond to the gospel he preached. If you are here and you know that your relationship with God is not where it should beif you are uncertain about eternityIf your not certain of where you would end up if your life ended today or tomorrowremember death waits for no manit’s appointed that each one of us will dietoday is a day of grace. You do not need to be perfect. You do not need to have all the answers. You simply need to come to Jesus.A Simple PrayerIf you desire to place your trust in Christ, you can pray quietly in your heart:“Lord Jesus, I know that I am a sinner. I believe You died for my sins and rose again. I turn from my sin and place my trust in You. Forgive me. Make me new. I receive You as my Lord and Savior. Amen.”The Bible tells us that if you prayed that sincerely, God hears you—and He saves you. Conclusion: A Life Well LivedAs we close, let us remember this:Stan Lagore’s story does not end today. His faith has become sight. His labor has turned to rest. His race is complete. And one day, for all who are in Christ, there will be a reunion where death has no power and tears are wiped away.Until then, we carry his legacy forwardnot just in memory, but in faith.“Well done, good and faithful servant… enter into the joy of your master.”Amen.PrayIf you prayed that prayer with sincerity todaycan I ask you to do something?please tell someone you prayed that prayer. The Christian journey is never to be walked alonethat’s why God created His church. After you tell someone, find a church and call it your homeKingdom Impact invites you to become part of usGod BlessWe love you Stan! 2 Timothy 4:7NKJV
