So let me say “Happy Birthday”if your part of the bride of Christ. its your birthday todaydon’t forget to tell the person sitting beside you Happy BdayThe story of Pentecost stretches from the Old Testament promises, to the New Testament fulfillment, to the ongoing work of the Holy Spirit today.prayerPart 1 — Pentecost in the Old Testament“The Promise Foretold”1. Pentecost Began as a Jewish FeastPentecost means “fiftieth.” Celebrated 50 days after Passover.(passover. celebrated the salvation of the israelites as the angel of death passed over Egypt killing the 1st born of animals and people if the family did not annoint the door posts with the blood of the lamb)Pentecost originally called the Feast of Weeks or Feast of Harvest. It celebrated: God’s provision Firstfruits harvest Covenant relationshipthink about it as the Israelites version of our Thanksgiving
Exodus 23:16 NASB95 16 “Also you shall observe the Feast of the Harvest of the first fruits of your labors from what you sow in the field; also the Feast of the Ingathering at the end of the year when you gather in the fruit of your labors from the field.Leviticus 23:15–17 NASB95 15 ‘You shall also count for yourselves from the day after the sabbath, from the day when you brought in the sheaf of the wave offering; there shall be seven complete sabbaths. 16 ‘You shall count fifty days to the day after the seventh sabbath; then you shall present a new grain offering to the Lord. 17 ‘You shall bring in from your dwelling places two loaves of bread for a wave offering, made of two-tenths of an ephah; they shall be of a fine flour, baked with leaven as first fruits to the Lord.Deuteronomy 16:9–10 NASB95 9 “You shall count seven weeks for yourself; you shall begin to count seven weeks from the time you begin to put the sickle to the standing grain. 10 “Then you shall celebrate the Feast of Weeks to the Lord your God with a tribute of a freewill offering of your hand, which you shall give just as the Lord your God blesses you;2. Mount Sinai and the Giving of the LawJewish tradition connects Pentecost with Moses receiving the Law on Mount Sinai.God descended with: Fire, Wind, Thunder and then His Divine voiceParallel to Acts 2Sinai → God writes His law on stone. Pentecost → God writes His law on hearts.Exodus 19:16–19 NASB95 16 So it came about on the third day, when it was morning, that there were thunder and lightning flashes and a thick cloud upon the mountain and a very loud trumpet sound, so that all the people who were in the camp trembled. 17 And Moses brought the people out of the camp to meet God, and they stood at the foot of the mountain. 18 Now Mount Sinai was all in smoke because the Lord descended upon it in fire; and its smoke ascended like the smoke of a furnace, and the whole mountain quaked violently. 19 When the sound of the trumpet grew louder and louder, Moses spoke and God answered him with thunder.Jeremiah 31:33 NASB95 33 “But this is the covenant which I will make with the house of Israel after those days,” declares the Lord, “I will put My law within them and on their heart I will write it; and I will be their God, and they shall be My people.3. The Prophecy of the SpiritGod promised a future outpouring of His Spirit.Key ProphecyJoel prophesied: Sons and daughters would prophesy Young and old would encounter God The Spirit would be poured on all peopleJoel 2:28–29 NASB95 28 “It will come about after this That I will pour out My Spirit on all mankind; And your sons and daughters will prophesy, Your old men will dream dreams, Your young men will see visions. 29 “Even on the male and female servants I will pour out My Spirit in those days.Sticky statementThe Old Testament points toward a day when God would no longer dwell only in temples He would dwell within His people.Part 2 — Pentecost in the New Testament“The Promise Fulfilled”1. Jesus Prepared the DisciplesJesus told them to wait in Jerusalem. They needed more than knowledge. They needed power. Luke 24:49Luke 24:49 NASB95 49 “And behold, I am sending forth the promise of My Father upon you; but you are to stay in the city until you are clothed with power from on high.”Acts 1:4–8 NASB95 4 Gathering them together, He commanded them not to leave Jerusalem, but to wait for what the Father had promised, “Which,” He said, “you heard of from Me; 5 for John baptized with water, but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days from now.” 6 So when they had come together, they were asking Him, saying, “Lord, is it at this time You are restoring the kingdom to Israel?” 7 He said to them, “It is not for you to know times or epochs which the Father has fixed by His own authority; 8 but you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be My witnesses both in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and even to the remotest part of the earth.”2. The Day of Pentecost ArrivedSuddenly: A sound like rushing wind Tongues of fire Speaking in other tongues Bold proclamationActs 2:1–4 NASB95 1 When the day of Pentecost had come, they were all together in one place. 2 And suddenly there came from heaven a noise like a violent rushing wind, and it filled the whole house where they were sitting. 3 And there appeared to them tongues as of fire distributing themselves, and they rested on each one of them. 4 And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit was giving them utterance.SymbolismWind = Breath of God Fire = Purity, presence, power Tongues = Global mission to all nations3. Peter’s SermonPeter explained this was the fulfillment of Joel’s prophecy. The fearful disciple became a bold preacher. 3,000 people were saved.Acts 2:14–18 NASB95 14 But Peter, taking his stand with the eleven, raised his voice and declared to them: “Men of Judea and all you who live in Jerusalem, let this be known to you and give heed to my words. 15 “For these men are not drunk, as you suppose, for it is only the third hour of the day; 16 but this is what was spoken of through the prophet Joel: 17 ‘And it shall be in the last days,’ God says, ‘That I will pour forth of My Spirit on all mankind; And your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, And your young men shall see visions, And your old men shall dream dreams; 18 Even on My bondslaves, both men and women, I will in those days pour forth of My Spirit And they shall prophesy.Acts 2:37–41 NASB95 37 Now when they heard this, they were pierced to the heart, and said to Peter and the rest of the apostles, “Brethren, what shall we do?” 38 Peter said to them, “Repent, and each of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins; and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. 39 “For the promise is for you and your children and for all who are far off, as many as the Lord our God will call to Himself.” 40 And with many other words he solemnly testified and kept on exhorting them, saying, “Be saved from this perverse generation!” 41 So then, those who had received his word were baptized; and that day there were added about three thousand souls.Sticky pointPentecost transformed ordinary believers into Spirit-empowered witnesses.Part 3 — What Pentecost Means Today“The Promise Continues”1. The Holy Spirit Is for TodayPentecost was not a one-time historical event only.Acts 2:38–39 NASB95 38 Peter said to them, “Repent, and each of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins; and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. 39 “For the promise is for you and your children and for all who are far off, as many as the Lord our God will call to Himself.”Peter declared: “The promise is for you, your children, and all who are far off.” as many as the Lord our God will call to Himself2. The Spirit Empowers BelieversThe Holy Spirit gives:ConvictionJohn 16:8 NASB95 8 “And He, when He comes, will convict the world concerning sin and righteousness and judgment;ComfortJohn 14:16 NASB95 16 “I will ask the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may be with you forever;BoldnessActs 4:31 NASB95 31 And when they had prayed, the place where they had gathered together was shaken, and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak the word of God with boldness.Spiritual FruitGalatians 5:22–23 NASB95 22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law.Spiritual gifts1 Corinthians 12:4–11 NASB95 4 Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit. 5 And there are varieties of ministries, and the same Lord. 6 There are varieties of effects, but the same God who works all things in all persons. 7 But to each one is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good. 8 For to one is given the word of wisdom through the Spirit, and to another the word of knowledge according to the same Spirit; 9 to another faith by the same Spirit, and to another gifts of healing by the one Spirit, 10 and to another the effecting of miracles, and to another prophecy, and to another the distinguishing of spirits, to another various kinds of tongues, and to another the interpretation of tongues. 11 But one and the same Spirit works all these things, distributing to each one individually just as He wills.GuidanceRomans 8:14 NASB95 14 For all who are being led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God.TeachingJohn 14:26 NASB95 26 “But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all that I said to you.3. The Church Must Live Spirit-FilledWithout the Spirit:Ministry becomes performance. Worship becomes ritual. Christianity becomes powerless religion. With the Spirit:Lives are transformed. The Church becomes alive. The Gospel advances with power.Ephesians 5:18 NASB95 18 And do not get drunk with wine, for that is dissipation, but be filled with the Spirit,4. Pentecost Calls Us to MissionPower for witnessActs 1:8 NASB95 8 but you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be My witnesses both in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and even to the remotest part of the earth.”This shows the expanding mission of the Gospel:Jerusalemthe people closest to us our family, friends, local communityJudeathe wider region around usour city, workplaces, neighboring communitiesSamariapeople different from usIsraelites and Samaritans did not like each otherHistorically, Jews and Samaritans disliked each other because after the Assyrian conquest, the Samaritans intermarried with foreign nations and developed different religious practices, causing many Jews to view them as spiritually compromised and ethnically impure.the Samaritans did not like not be liked! For us this translates as different cultures, backgrounds, beliefsIt also include the people we may normally avoid or overlookThe ends of the earththe global mission nations missionaries spreading the Gospel worldwideHere in Edmonton we have the world at our doorstep.we don’t have to go too far. to reach the worldI read an artcle siting a survey recently that stated of 99% of the nations of the world have at least 1 person living in Edmonton. in 2020 Stats Canada said it was 92%Either way, we have the potential of reaching the world and staying in your neighborhoodNotice this is a progression, start in your inner circle and work outward. Why?Well I beleive God wanted to keep our motivation pure. Our Motivation is requied to be Love.So why not start with the ones you already Love?If we try to reach the world or even the samaritan in our lives, out of guilt, or pride, or legalism...yes that’s a very easy trap to fall intowe will fail everytimebut if we operated through the power of the Holy Spirit motivated by love for the person we are trying to reach.Thats a winning combination every time! The Holy Spirit empowers believers to share Jesus:locally, regionally, cross-culturally, and globally. The mission of Pentecost was never confined to one room, one church, or one nationit was meant for the whole world.sticky pointPentecost is not just something we celebrate — it is something we live. Conclusion“From Harvest to Revival”In the Old Testament, Pentecost celebrated firstfruits. In Acts, Pentecost brought a harvest of souls. Today, God is still pouring out His Spirit. and its with the same purpose as When He started His Church almost 2000 years agoincidently 2030/33 will be when the church turns 2000Final Challenge Ask:Are we merely informed Christians, or Spirit-empowered believers? Are we simply spectators, or witnesses?Have we experienced the fire and presence of God personally?Closing Prayer FocusFresh filling of the Holy Spirit, Boldness for witness, Spiritual renewal, Revival in the Church, Hunger for God’s presence Exodus 23:16NLT
