  • 1 Samuel 3:19–21 KJV 1900
19 And Samuel grew, and the Lord was with him, and did let none of his words fall to the ground. 20 And all Israel from Dan even to Beer-sheba knew that Samuel was established to be a prophet of the Lord. 21 And the Lord appeared again in Shiloh: for the Lord revealed himself to Samuel in Shiloh by the word of the Lord.
Main Idea: God confirms His calling to us and others as we serve Him in the place and time He appoints.
    Introduction
Sometimes you know God has stirred your heart, but you still wonder, “Is this real, or is this just my emotions?” You can feel called to lead, called to serve, called to start something new, called to step into a new season, and still battle doubt. God understands that. That is why He does not only call His people. He confirms His call over time.
In 1 Samuel 3, the nation is in a spiritually dim season. Earlier in the chapter (1 Samuel 3:11-18), God speaks a hard word of judgment to Eli’s house, and Samuel learns that obedience is not always comfortable. When Samuel shares the truth, God begins to make it clear that Samuel is not just a helper in the tabernacle. He is a prophet being raised up by the Lord to Spiritually lead the nation. (1 Samuel 3:11–18)
Our passage, 1 Samuel 3:19–21, shows how God confirms what He initiates. God confirms the call by staying with His servant, supporting His servant’s ministry, and showing Himself through His Word. When you are faithful in the place God assigned, God will give you the confirmation you need in His timing. (1 Samuel 3:19–21)

    I. The Lord STAYS to Confirm the Call (1 Samuel 3:19)

Samuel’s life shows that calling is not a one time moment. Calling is a life that keeps growing. The Bible says, “And Samuel grew, and the Lord was with him.” (1 Samuel 3:19) God stayed with Samuel during the process of becoming. God did not call him and then leave him. God stayed close, and God kept shaping him while Samuel kept serving. (Philippians 1:6)
The verse also says God “did let none of his words fall to the ground.” (1 Samuel 3:19) That means God made Samuel’s ministry effective. Samuel was not successful because he was impressive. Samuel was fruitful because God was present. When the Lord stays with you, He not only grows you, He also guards what He has placed in you, and He gives weight to your obedience. (John 15:4–5)
    Synopsis
God confirms the call by staying with the servant. Samuel kept growing, and God kept being with him. The Lord also made Samuel’s words effective, showing that God’s presence produces real fruit and lasting impact. (1 Samuel 3:19)
    Five Theological Truths
    God’s calling includes a growth process, not instant perfection. (Luke 2:52; 2 Peter 3:18; Philippians 1:6; 1 Timothy 4:15–16; Isaiah 40:31)
2 Peter 3:18 “18 But grow in grace, and in the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. To him be glory both now and for ever. Amen.”
God’s presence is the foundation of faithful service. (Joshua 1:5; Hebrews 13:5; Isaiah 41:10; Psalm 46:1; Matthew 28:20)
Matthew 28:20 “20 Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen.”
God confirms His servants by making their obedience fruitful. (John 15:4–5; Psalm 1:1–3; Galatians 6:9; Matthew 7:20; 1 Corinthians 15:58)
1 Corinthians 15:58 “58 Therefore, my beloved brethren, be ye stedfast, unmoveable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, forasmuch as ye know that your labour is not in vain in the Lord.”
God validates His message by preserving the integrity of His Word. (Isaiah 55:11; Numbers 23:19; Jeremiah 1:12; Psalm 119:89; Matthew 24:35)
Matthew 24:35 “35 Heaven and earth shall pass away, but my words shall not pass away.”
Faithfulness in hidden places prepares you for public usefulness. (Matthew 6:6; Luke 16:10; Colossians 3:23–24; 1 Samuel 16:11–13; 1 Peter 5:6)
Matthew 6:6 “6 But thou, when thou prayest, enter into thy closet, and when thou hast shut thy door, pray to thy Father which is in secret; and thy Father which seeth in secret shall reward thee openly.”

II. The Lord SUPPORTS to Confirm the Call (1 Samuel 3:20)

The Bible says, “And all Israel from Dan even to Beersheba knew that Samuel was established to be a prophet of the Lord.” (1 Samuel 3:20) Samuel’s calling began quietly, but God confirmed it openly. God made it known across the nation that Samuel was not pretending, not pushing himself forward, and not grabbing a title. God supported Samuel’s calling publicly, so the people could recognize what God was doing. (Psalm 37:5–6)
Here is the freeing truth. God never asked you to spend your life trying to prove yourself to people. God calls you to serve Him, and He knows how to handle the results. When your ways please the Lord, He can even make your enemies to be at peace with you. (Proverbs 16:7) God’s support does not always look like everyone liking you. It looks like God establishing you so that the right people can see the fruit and give God the glory. (Matthew 5:16)
    Synopsis
God confirms the call by supporting the servant publicly and powerfully. Samuel’s credibility was not self-made. It was God-established. When God supports your calling, the evidence becomes visible in His time, and your work speaks louder than your words. (1 Samuel 3:20)
    Five Theological Truths
God is able to make His work evident to others without self-promotion. (Psalm 37:5–6; Proverbs 18:16; Matthew 5:16; 1 Peter 2:12; Psalm 75:6–7)
Proverbs 18:16 “16 A man’s gift maketh room for him, And bringeth him before great men.”
God can give peace in relationships when you walk pleasingly before Him. (Proverbs 16:7; Romans 12:18; Matthew 5:9; 1 Peter 3:10–11; Hebrews 12:14)
Proverbs 16:7 “7 When a man’s ways please the Lord, He maketh even his enemies to be at peace with him.”
God establishes leaders by calling and confirmation, not by selfish ambition. (Hebrews 5:4; Jeremiah 1:5; Acts 13:2; 1 Timothy 1:12; Ephesians 4:11–12)
Hebrews 5:4 “4 And no man taketh this honour unto himself, but he that is called of God, as was Aaron.”
God confirms credibility through spiritual fruit and consistent faithfulness. (Matthew 7:20; Galatians 5:22–23; Colossians 1:10; James 3:17–18; 1 Corinthians 15:58)
Colossians 1:10 “10 That ye might walk worthy of the Lord unto all pleasing, being fruitful in every good work, and increasing in the knowledge of God;”
God can protect His servants from counterfeit accusations by making truth plain. (2 Corinthians 4:2; 2 Corinthians 6:3–4; Proverbs 12:19; Psalm 34:19; Romans 8:31)
Romans 8:31 “31 What shall we then say to these things? If God be for us, who can be against us?”

III. The Lord SHOWS Himself to Confirm the Call (1 Samuel 3:21)

The Bible says, “And the Lord appeared again in Shiloh.” (1 Samuel 3:21) That is hope in one sentence. Shiloh was the worship center, yet the people were spiritually drifting. Still, God kept showing up. God’s presence remained because God was raising up a prophet who would honor His voice. Righteous witness invites divine revelation. When one person will listen and obey, God can keep a light burning in a dim season. (1 Samuel 3:1; 1 Samuel 3:21)
Then verse 21 tells us how God showed Himself: “For the Lord revealed himself to Samuel in Shiloh by the word of the Lord.” (1 Samuel 3:21) God’s presence is tied to God’s Word. Without the Word, we are confused and vulnerable. The Word steadies you, strengthens you, and stabilizes you in your calling. When the Word is central, God’s guidance becomes clear. When the Word is neglected, life gets noisy and direction gets cloudy. (Psalm 119:105)
    Synopsis
God confirms the call by showing Himself. He appeared again in Shiloh, and He revealed Himself through His Word. God’s presence and God’s Word work together to anchor the servant and bring hope to the people. (1 Samuel 3:21)
    Five Theological Truths
God can show Himself even in spiritually dry environments to preserve His purpose. (1 Samuel 3:1; 1 Samuel 3:21; Psalm 85:6; Isaiah 57:15; Habakkuk 3:2)
Psalm 85:6 “6 Wilt thou not revive us again: That thy people may rejoice in thee?”
God’s presence is experienced where hearts are humble and worship is sincere. (Psalm 22:3; 2 Chronicles 7:14; Jeremiah 29:13; James 4:8; Matthew 18:20)
Matthew 18:20 “20 For where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them.”
God reveals Himself through His Word, not through hype or spectacle. (1 Samuel 3:21; John 17:17; 2 Timothy 3:16–17; Hebrews 4:12; Isaiah 55:11)
Isaiah 55:11 “11 So shall my word be that goeth forth out of my mouth: It shall not return unto me void, But it shall accomplish that which I please, And it shall prosper in the thing whereto I sent it.”
God’s Word stabilizes the called and strengthens them for faithful service. (Psalm 119:105; Joshua 1:8–9; Colossians 3:16; 2 Timothy 2:15; James 1:22–25)
Colossians 3:16 “16 Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom; teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord.”
God restores hope to His people by raising a Word-centered witness. (Amos 8:11; Romans 10:17; 1 Peter 1:23; 2 Corinthians 5:20; Ezekiel 37:4–6)
Romans 10:17 “17 So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.”
    Closing Prayer
Father, thank You for being the God who calls and the God who confirms. Help me trust Your presence while I grow, Your support while I serve, and Your Word while I follow. Give me a faithful spirit in the place You assigned and a humble heart that listens when You speak. Use my life to point others back to You. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
