Numbers 13:1–4 ESV 1 The Lord spoke to Moses, saying, 2 “Send men to spy out the land of Canaan, which I am giving to the people of Israel. From each tribe of their fathers you shall send a man, every one a chief among them.” 3 So Moses sent them from the wilderness of Paran, according to the command of the Lord, all of them men who were heads of the people of Israel. 4 And these were their names: From the tribe of Reuben, Shammua the son of Zaccur;Numbers 13:25–33 ESV 25 At the end of forty days they returned from spying out the land. 26 And they came to Moses and Aaron and to all the congregation of the people of Israel in the wilderness of Paran, at Kadesh. They brought back word to them and to all the congregation, and showed them the fruit of the land. 27 And they told him, “We came to the land to which you sent us. It flows with milk and honey, and this is its fruit. 28 However, the people who dwell in the land are strong, and the cities are fortified and very large. And besides, we saw the descendants of Anak there. 29 The Amalekites dwell in the land of the Negeb. The Hittites, the Jebusites, and the Amorites dwell in the hill country. And the Canaanites dwell by the sea, and along the Jordan.” 30 But Caleb quieted the people before Moses and said, “Let us go up at once and occupy it, for we are well able to overcome it.” 31 Then the men who had gone up with him said, “We are not able to go up against the people, for they are stronger than we are.” 32 So they brought to the people of Israel a bad report of the land that they had spied out, saying, “The land, through which we have gone to spy it out, is a land that devours its inhabitants, and all the people that we saw in it are of great height. 33 And there we saw the Nephilim (the sons of Anak, who come from the Nephilim), and we seemed to ourselves like grasshoppers, and so we seemed to them.”PRAYERTITLE: PROMISES OVER PERSPECTIVESINTROIn 2006 there was a movie that came out called the Pursuit of Happiness and in this movie, Will Smith(Before he started putting his hands on people) played a masterful role about a salesman who has all the odds stacked against him,He has a struggling business,He has repeated rejectionMajor Financial pressureHis wife leaves himHe has to raise his son even in the midst of homelessnessAnd his gets an internship that doesn't pay nor is it a guarantee for a JobHe has to rush and get his son to then rush to get in line for the shelter. He gets robbed,Arrestedand evictedAll while trying to conceal his struggles to take part in his internship. Now I don’t claim to be HE MAN or macho man but ive never had a movie make me want to cry like “ The Pursuit of Happyness” I ain’t talking about just crying i wanted to ugly cry.I remember watching this movie a few years after it came out I was probably 11-12 years old and I was at my cousins house and it just so happen to be on.And i’m sitting there surrounded by my cousins watching this movie and im fighting for my life to hold my tears back. And it gets to the scene where him and his are in the bathroom and his son is asleep and he locks the door but someone is trying to get into the bathroom, and the camera pans to Will Smiths face and he starts crying, then I start crying, so i act like i had to use the bathroom to tighten myself up.then it gets to the end of the movie and he’s selected for the Job and HE narrates himself and says “This Part of My Life,…This Little Part is Called HAPPYNESS”and i look around at my cousins and you would’ve thought they were watching a comedy compared to what i was watchingThey had smiles on their faces they were joking around andAnd i sat there as a 12 year old boy holding back tears angry at my cousins and i asked them how could see this movie and still be able to joke and laugh. And they told me that they already saw the movie.—————So while im watching the problems unfold, they’re watching knowing how the story ends. They see the same scenes that i sawThey see the same problems I see. They see the same Obstacles I see.But what they know about the ending changes how they respond to everything before it.—————Church, sometimes we approach life like the scene that we’re in is the end of the story. We see a closed door, and we assume there is no way forward. We experience a setback, and we decide we cannot keep going. We face something bigger than ourselves, and we forget who brought us this far.We let one frightening scene make us question everything God has said.—————and thats where Numbers 13 meets us,Israel is standing at the edge of the promised land. And before the spies ever see a giant, before they encounter a fortified city, before they bring back a report, God says that this is the land He is giving them.God gives them His word before they ever get a look at the opposition. But when the spies returned from seeing the land, they gave a report as if the inhabitants of the promised land had already won! They saw the strength of the enemy and it caused them to loose sight of the strength of our GOD.They allowed their lack of faith to spread fear and panic amongst the camp. They were accepting defeat in the midst of a direct promise from God, and it’s sinful to accept defeat in something that God has already promised.—————A good man by the name of Caleb decided that he wouldn’t drink the KOOL-AIDHe decides to trust in the God who not only quote unquote saw “the move” but also wrote the script.and he stood up amongst all of the foolishness. And declared that they march in the land that GOD has promised them. All 12 spies saw the same landall 12 spies saw the same peopleall 12 spies saw the same fortified citiesall 12 spies saw the same Giantsall 12 spies saw the same fruit all 12 spies saw the same situationbut not all 12 spies came back with the same report.only 2 remained faithful to Hold to God’s unchanging Hand—————Now, God has not told us every scene we will face in this movie called life.He hasn’t promised that every situation will end the way we want. But He has given us His Word, and we can trust Him enough to obey, even when we cannot see how He will bring us through. You may not know what happens in the next scene, but you know the God who is calling you forward! You may not get what you want, you may not get something check off of your amazon wish list, but God is not a man that he should lie, and if he said it, IT MUST COME TRUE.And no im not preaching a prosperity Gospel im simply speaking on the truth that is the promises GOD!And We serve a God that wants us to focus on his “Promises over our Perspective!”Ive got three points for you today the first being:The Promise came Before the ProblemNumbers 13:1–2 ESV 1 The Lord spoke to Moses, saying, 2 “Send men to spy out the land of Canaan, which I am giving to the people of Israel. From each tribe of their fathers you shall send a man, every one a chief among them.”Here in the first two verses God gives Moses the plan as they are standing at the edge of the promised land.He tells Moses send men into the land of Canaan to spy out the land, ………..and he ends that sentence by saying the LAND in which i’m Giving to you. Before the spies were even selected to go and survey the land,…. God had already built a promise into the plan. All they had to do was be obedient.God sent them to explore the land He had promised them,.. to see its goodness, bring back its fruit, and prepare to enter it. But while they were looking at what God had in store, they became consumed with what stood in the way.———————I want to encourage and remind you today that there are thingsthat you are facing in your life,There are things that your worried about in your life,There are things that have you fearful right now, there are things that have you acting differentthere are things that are out of your controlthat God has already placed his promise on, AND ALL hes calling you to do is be Obedient.—————The problem is that when they went to spy on the land they viewed the land focused on the problem, instead of viewing the land focused on the Promise. And I tried to get into their shoes and understand what it is that cause them to loose faith in the promise.maybe they were already fearful from spying in another land.maybe they had some close calls that could’ve costed them their lives.maybe its because they were in a foreign land perhaps uncomfortable for 40 daysmaybe it was that they where surrounded by the enemy for 40 days.maybe in those 40 days they forgot just what God had brought them through. And as im thinking about them all i could think about is my favorite Boxer of all time Roy Jones Jr.1`———————Roy Jones was the man:Gold medalistA boxing record of 66-10 loseswith 44 KOsHe earned the nicknames Superman and Captain HookAnd he was one of the best showmen that you would ever see in the RINGBut there was a time he suffered a few loses and people, promoters, and fans began to question if he was still Superman.and in the midst of this doubt He would rack up a few wins. And in one of his post-fight interviews he said this iconic phrase“YALL MUST’VE FORGOT”and he would go on to list all of the things he’s done in the boxing world.the olympicsthe records brokenthe belts wonthe big names he has beaten.and end by saying Y'all must've forgot that Roy Jones is Superman—————I believe when God saw the Spies focused on the problems in the land God was saying “Yall Must’ve Forgot”Yall must’ve forgot that for centuries I’ve kept MY promise back when I gave it to Abraham,Yall must’ve forgot that I have a Centuries worth of time dealing with problems and keeping my promise.Yall must forgot:When Abraham and Sarah were too old to have a child, IT was I who gave them Isaac! — Genesis 21:1–7When Isaac was lying on the altar, God provided a ram! — Genesis 22:9–14When Joseph was sold into slavery and thrown into prison, God stayed with him and raised him to power! — Genesis 39–41When famine threatened to destroy the family, God had already positioned Joseph to preserve their lives! — Genesis 45:5–11When Pharaoh ordered their baby boys killed, God preserved the child He would use to lead them out! — Exodus 1:22–2:10When Pharaoh refused to release them, God stretched out His hand until Egypt had to let them go! — Exodus 7–12When an army was behind them and a sea was before them, God opened a road through the water! — Exodus 14:19–31When there was no food in the wilderness, God sent bread from heaven! — Exodus 16:11–15When there was no water to drink, God brought water out of a rock! — Exodus 17:1–7Have you forgotten who I am?—————My question today is what have we forgotten?have we forgotten when the doctor said one thing, and God said something else.when money was tight, but God said ill supply all your needswhen it seemed like you would fail the class, but God came throughHave we forgotten?—————Sub Point 1The truth is many of us have reacted to obstacles in our life like the Ten Spies.More worried about the problem than trusting in God’s promises.God has Promised us:That he will never Leave us nor forsake us.That Nothing can separate us from his LoveThat his Grace is sufficient in our weakness. That he hears our prayersIn fact theres a promise for ever situation we are in as long as were seeking the Kingdom.—————Heres the reality: when we act like the ten spies, and we allow our fear and worry of a problem, to become greater than our trust in God’s promise. What we’re really saying is ONE of two things:First were saying:God, I want to obey You, as long as it doesn’t cost me.News flash Life as a Christian is a life of sacrifice. All throughout the Bible when God used somebody they had to sacrifice. We even have access to Heaven when we die because Jesus Sacrificed. We see sacrifice as this thing that has no value to it.When the truth is when its done for the Kingdom, obedience through sacrifice becomes the evidence that God has his hand on your life.—————SECONDLY we are saying:“God, I’m giving this problem more authority than Your promise.”“God, this problem hurts.I can feel the pain. I can see the opposition. I can name everything that could go wrong. And because the problem feels so immediate, I’m struggling to rest in what You have PROMISED.”Church, that struggle is real. Trusting God doesn’t require you to pretend you aren’t hurting. You can cry and still trust Him. You can have questions and still obey Him. You can feel afraid and still take the next faithful step. The pain is real - But God has not left me.My strength is limited - but His grace is sufficient in my weakness.I don’t know how this season will unfold - but I do know that nothing can separate me from His LOVE.—————The failure of the ten spies was that their fear became an argument against obeying God.They saw strong people and concluded that “We are not able.”And that takes us to our second Point:when we trust the problem more than His Promise:The Problem Distorts our Perspective. The spies began by confirming the goodness of the land, but their attention shifted to the strength of its inhabitants.By verse 33, they described themselves as grasshoppers.Their fear shaped not only how they viewed the land and how they viewed their ability to obey God, but even how they viewed them selves.Numbers 13:27–29 ESV 27 And they told him, “We came to the land to which you sent us. And the Canaanites dwell by the sea, and along the Jordan.”Numbers 13:31–33 ESV 31 Then the men who had gone up with him said, “We are not able to go up against the people, for they are stronger than we are.” 32 So they brought to the people of Israel a bad report of the land that they had spied out, saying, “The land, through which we have gone to spy it out, is a land that devours its inhabitants, and all the people that we saw in it are of great height. 33 And there we saw the Nephilim (the sons of Anak, who come from the Nephilim), and we seemed to ourselves like grasshoppers, and so we seemed to them.”Look at how their report of the land changes, they started speaking on how Good the land was, and that it flows with milk and honey, they even brought back fruit to prove the Goodness of the land that God promised them,But in verse 28 we see some foolishness, even with all the proof of God’s promise.they allowed the problems they saw to distort their perspective of the situation. The people were strongThe cities were fortifiedThe descendants of Anak are therethey even go on to name the different groups of people and where they are camped out.and yes these are real obstacles, but by verse 31 we see the problem distort their perspective even furtherthey move from describing what they saw to describing What they can’t do.Numbers 13:31 ESV 31 Then the men who had gone up with him said, “We are not able to go up against the people, for they are stronger than we are.”Many of us have this same mindset when we are faced with trails.we like to say we don’t have the strength to make it through this problem or this season.but my question is who told you it was your strength that would get you through?———-10 spies focused on what they couldn’t do but Caleb and Joshua focused on what the Lord could do.And sometimes our perspective becomes distorted because we keep asking, “Am I strong enough?” while forgetting to ask, “What has God promised?”In 2 Corinthians 12, Paul pleaded with the Lord to remove his thorn. The Lord answered him:2 Corinthians 12:8–9 ESV 8 Three times I pleaded with the Lord about this, that it should leave me. 9 But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly of my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may rest upon me.Church, you can be exhausted and still be sustained. You can be hurting and still be held. You can reach the end of your strength and discover that God has not reached the end of His faithfulness. That doesn’t mean the next step will be easy. It means you can depend on Him as you take it.Yes our weakness is real but just like Paul we can glorify God in our weakness by how we trust in His Strength.—————But look at how they allowed the problem to further distort there perspective! They began to look at themselves as grasshoppers. They allowed their perspective of a problem to view themselves as insignificant even under the protection of an almighty God.—————and we can do the same:Im too weakIm too smallIm not enoughIm not smart enoughI cant defeat these Giants in my lifeThe Giant of addiction is to strong for meThe Giant of self doubt is too strong for meThe Giant of fixing my marriage is too strongBut the question was never whether Israel was stronger than the giants. The question was whether they would trust the God who had promised them the land!Caleb Believed the Power of God’s Promise. In verse 30, Caleb said, “Let us go up at once and occupy it, for we are well able to overcome it.”Caleb had seen the same land, the same fortified cities, and the same enemies. But while the others were explaining why they couldn’t, Caleb was calling them to trust that God could!—————See in life there are two roads you can take. You can believe and trust in the promises of God over your perspective, and it’ll always lead to you seeing the power of God’s Promise.OrYou can allow fear and worry of what you see to give the Problem more authority in your life than God’s promises, and that always leads to a distorted perspective of who you are,of whats going on inn your lifeand most dangerously it’ll have you believe the lie that God is not able what he says he will do.—————And we see this path evident in the ten spiesThe ten spies influenced a generation to turn back and missed what God had in store because of a lack of faith and obedience!ButJoshua and Caleb believed and possessed what the others were too afraid to pursue.Their faith did not spare them the PAIN of the wilderness, but God sustained them through it and brought them into the land that He promised!—————STORY ABOUT MY MOMbut family , before I criticize those ten spies too harshly, I have to admit: I know what it feels like to see the problem and lose sight of the promise. My father told me all my life that Smart People learn from there mistakes but Wise people learn from others mistakes and I urge you family to learn from my mistakes. When my mom told me her diagnosis I all i could see and hear was the word CANCER.I immediately imagined everything that could go wrong!I allowed my perspective of what was going on to cause me to lose sight of everything else.I got to the point that I was scared to even go see my mom because it would only validate my fear. Her diagnosis seemed so big.Good news seemed so fakeand i truly struggled with seeing God in the situation.and one day she saw that on my face and she spoke life into me.She didn’t do it by giving me nice motherly things to comfort her son, she did by reminding me of the Promises that God has over her life.that He promised to never leave his peopleand that neither death nor life can separate her from his loveand before we ended that talk she told me not to focus on the diagnosis but to keep my eyes on Jesus.————and when she said that it reminded me of one of the first books Pastor T gave me when I first got to Springhill and that book is the New National Baptist Hymnal 1977.and when I first got that book I barely new any hymns and just flipping through it i found one that has been my encouragement ever since.and i’ve sung this hymn hundreds of times, especially every time I felt my focus in the wrong place. and it simply goes1. O soul, are you weary and troubled? No light in the darkness you see? There’s light for a look at the Savior, And life more abundant and free!Refrain: Turn your eyes upon Jesus, Look full in His wonderful face, And the things of earth will grow strangely dim, In the light of His glory and grace.2. Thro' death into life everlasting, He passed, and we follow Him there; O’er us sin no more hath dominion-- For more than conqu’rors we are!3. His Word shall not fail you--He promised; Believe Him, and all will be well: Then go to a world that is dying, His perfect salvation to tell!—————When I Finally learned to turn my eyes towards Jesus in my mothers situation.as bad as i would’ve been hurt if he allowed her to lose her bout,My joy would be the same because he promised that neither death nor life could separate her from his love!and when i finally understood that I could have Joy in the Lord even through one of the roughest seasons of my life .“That right there, that little moment right there is what I call Joy in God’s eternal Promises”MY question to you today is have you turned not only your Eyes upon Jesusbut have you trusted him with your life?In Numbers 14:8–9. Joshua and Caleb tore their clothes to make the urgent appeal to tell the people that the Lord can bring them into the landand then they plead to the people:“Do not rebel against the LORD.”They were calling the people to trust God and respond in obedience. But the people hardened their hearts and verses 26–33 ill let you all go back and read it for yourself. But those who rejected God never saw the promise in fact they died in the very same wilderness they rejected him in.Now, entering Canaan and receiving eternal salvation are not the same thing. But Hebrews 3–4 takes this very wilderness story and brings its warning to us:When you hear God’s voice, do not harden your heart.Joshua and Caleb called Israel to trust the God who had promised them an inheritance.Family today the Gospel of Jesus Christ calls us to trust a Savior who died and three days later rose from the grave with all power in his hands!AND he has Promised us eternal life as long as we choose him and submit to him as Lord of our life. You may be here today and like the Israelites your standing on the edge of choosing the Promise of salvation that Jesus has waiting for you!let us pray!Let us pray!Thank you Jesus!!!!!!!!!“God sent them to inspect the land, but they started questioning the promise. They were supposed to bring back information for obedience; instead, they brought back arguments for unbelief.”dending:story about my momhow when I finally trust God over my perspective of how i saw my momwhen i finally trusted God regardless of what he had for her futurewhen i finally found comfort in his promise regardless of if it took her life or notthat part “that little part right there is what i call Happiness”Numbers 13:1–4NLT
