John 4:1–38ESV
- IntroGood Morning Church Family Im AaronI serve as the worship pastor so obviously worship is very important to me.We worship Jesus through a variety of ways in our everyday life but in this context worship through song is Worship fundamentally expresses reverence and adoration toward God through both individual and communal response.Worshiping Jesus has really impacted my life because I once went through a really challenging season in my life.I remember driving home from a job site and the sing “The Blessing” came on.I started weeping. In that car I felt very alone, an outcast, unknown and broken however through music Jesus brought healing to my heart. When I worshiped Jesus, he renewed my soul and restored my life through biblical truth.Jesus is calling the broken hearted to repentance and worship. And that is exactly what today is all about.Main Exposition>SLIDEMain Point: Jesus our Savior, is calling His church to affectionately worship Him in spirit and in truth. Before we address the why we first have to establish who we worship.Who Do We Worship? We worship Jesus the Messiah, the only God, the Risen God who brings waters of life in His name to all believe who in their heart and confess with their Mouth that Jesus is Lord.Brief ContextSamaritans were a people with a complex and troubled history in relation to Jewish identity and religious practice. In Second Kings, the King of Assyria took people from Babylon and other ancient middle-eastern lands and settled them in Samaria north of Judea. These new inhabitants of Samaria married local Jewish people and over time This demographic upheaval created a fundamental identity crisis: while these settlers adopted worship of the LORD, they simultaneously maintained their ancestral religious practices, establishing their own priesthoods and continuing to follow the customs of their nations of origin. The Jews and Samaritans really did not get along over the years. They had conflicts over rebuilding the temple and jewish reconstruction in Ezra and Nehemiah. But to save us all the trouble and finger pointing, there biggest beef was a disagreement over where to worship God.The Jews firmly believed they needed to worship the Lord in the temple in Jerusalem whereas the Samaritans believed Mt Gerizim was the rightful place to worship because it had historical significance in the books of Deut and Josh.Which bring us to John 4 where a Samaritan woman, an outcast and enemy of the jews meetds Jesusshes a broken woman from a broken situation. She had a big scarlet invisible A written on her forehead. She was known as a adulter, a promiscuous womanSomeone who was trying to fill the whole in her heart with relationships. But Jesus asks her for water and by doing so he cuts through the divide and he sees her for who she really isA lost daughter in need of her savior>SLIDEEnglish Standard Version Chapter 4
13 Jesus said to her, “Everyone who drinks of this water will be thirsty again, 14 but whoever drinks of the water that I will give him will never be thirsty again. The water that I will give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life.”
Jesus is not really concerned with the water but he is concerned with this broken women's heart.Jesus is calling the broken hearted to repentance and worship.Jesus offers living water to all who recognize their need for a savior and worship Jesus as their Lord.A few verses later the woman says to Jesus,>SLIDEEnglish Standard Version Chapter 425 “I know that Messiah is coming (he who is called Christ). When he comes, he will tell us all things.” 26 Jesus said to her, “I who speak to you am he.”
Messiah means “anointed one”Jesus is the Messiah the anointed one, he brings Salvation to all those who worship Him as King and Lord.So who do we worship? We worship our messiah Jesushow do we worship JesusHow Do We Worship? The hot button issue of the day was “where do we worship”? There was fighting and debate over this one question. The woman recognized that Jesus was someone who was significant. She called him a profit which means “A person inspired by God to reveal God’s purpose or will.”She she sees her opportunity and asks, our fathers worshiped on this mountain but you say we should worship in Jerusalem. Which is it, where do we worship?Jesus says to her,>SLIDEEnglish Standard Version Chapter 423 But the hour is coming, and is now here, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for the Father is seeking such people to worship him. 24 God is spirit, and those who worship him must worship in spirit and truth.
Instead of pandering to the quarrels of her time Jesus reveals the deep theological truth that it doesn't matter where you worship, the physical location but who and how you worship.Another way to say is, is that Worship is about your heart.Jesus says in verse 23 that true worshipers worship in Spirit and in truth. But who are true worshipers?>SLIDETrue worshipers are those who have the right heart posture before their king.True worshipers are those who love Jesus with all their heart soul mind and strength. The single most important thing to understand about worship is that the only worship that is acceptable to God is worship that proceeds from a heart that is trusting in God, and in God alone.R. C. SproulTrue worshipers trust in God alone.Right heart posture, what does it look like to have the right heart posture during worship?True Worshipers are these 3 things:>SLIDETrue worshipers recognize their own depravity and need for a saviorThe total depravity of man means that sin—originating from humanity’s fall in Genesis—has corrupted every dimension of human nature: mind, will, emotions, and flesh.romans 1:28New International Version (2011) Chapter 1Furthermore, just as they did not think it worthwhile to retain the knowledge of God, so God gave them over to a depraved mind, so that they do what ought not to be done. 29 They have become filled with every kind of wickedness, evil, greed and depravity.
>SLIDENew International Version (2011) Chapter 1Romans 6:23
In order to worship the Lord we first have to recognize our own need for a savior.True worshipers recognize that without Jesus all is lost and the human heart will always choose evil.Without God, mankind is deprivedTrue worshipers recognize their own dapravity and that they desperatly need Jesus. They recognize that no matter how hard they try they still have the stain of sin and need a saviors blood to wash them clean.>SLIDEI like how NLT saysRomans 3:24–26New Living Translation Chapter 324 Yet God, in his grace, freely makes us right in his sight. He did this through Christ Jesus when he freed us from the penalty for our sins. 25 For God presented Jesus as the sacrifice for sin. People are made right with God when they believe that Jesus sacrificed his life, shedding his blood.
By the blood of Christ we can have a right relationship with him.True worship starts and ends with our need for Jesus>SLIDE2. They desire a right relationship with Jesus above all thingsThey put Jesus first in their life above all things desperately want to have a healthy relationship with him. They repent and believe Jesus is king. They accept the free gift of grace and seek to live our scripture in their every day life.Worship is more than just outward obedience but inward heart transformation.Their heart seeks to serve Jesus and have a relationship with Him.>SLIDE3. They worship Jesus affectionatelyEvery healthy relationship has affection. We show Christ our affection when we worship.1 Tim 2:8 I desire then that in every place the men should pray, lifting holy hands without anger or quarreling.Affectionate worship often looks like lifting your hands heart and singing to the Lord. Affectionate worship looks like telling Jesus I love you. Affection is both physical and relational.Psalm 141:2 “Let my prayer be counted as incense before you, and the lifting up of my hands as the evening sacrifice!”True worshipers draw near to God, they see the immense sacrifice and suffering Jesus went through and it wells up in them producing awe and worship.Because it should have been on the cross, yet God. Jesus went in my place. That kind of grace, that kind of love should drive you to tears. To your knees in adoration. That love should send you songing songs, hymns and spiritual songs . We should all ask why God? Why do you love me so much. To worship the father with tears of thanksgiving and joy.The love of Christ should bring you to worship him in spirit and in truth. How do we worship affectionately in Spirit and In Truth?Worship In spiritJohn 4:23–24 “But the hour is coming, and is now here, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for the Father is seeking such people to worship him. God is spirit, and those who worship him must worship in spirit and truth.”When Jesus says worship in spirit he is explaining three things.1. True worship is empowered by the Holy Spirit. Worship is a spiritual matter and we as humans can not truly worship without the Holy Spirit working within us, enabling us to have the right heart when worshiping.Worship must be inspired and empowered by the Holy Spirit because God is dwelling in the hearts of his people which makes worship the natural outcome of his presence.>SLIDE2. The physical location to worship the Lord doesn't matter anymore because God does not live in a temple made of stone but in the hearts of his people. That when we worship Jesus through song and prayer, our souls are actually worshiping the Lord in the spiritual realm. In the old covenant God lived in a temple in Jerusalem but when the curtain was torn in two at the crucifixion it symbolized that God is now assemble to all his people all the time because the Holy Spirit lives inside believersGod Is Spirit.>SLIDETrue worship is not just about outward expressing but also inward adoration. What does this mean? We worship with our physical bodies but also our souls in spirit. This is seen in Luke 1Mary in Luke 1:46–47 “My soul magnifies the Lord, and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior,”In order to truly worship Jesus, your soul has to response to the realization of who God is and his Magnificent character.Genuine worship is not self-generated or self seeking but the right response to a Holy God.What does the Lord mean when he says worship in Truth?Worship In Truth?>SLIDETo worship in Truth means to see God for who he really is and to respond accordingly to that Biblical truth.True worship requires you to see Jesus as Lord and worthy of worship. The creator and sustainer of all things, the savior of the world who gave himself as a ransom for many.True worship is to be so personally and hopelessly in love with God that the idea of a transfer of affection never even remotely exists.A. W. TozerIn other words that you love Jesus so much that the thought of loving another brings grief to the soul and can’t exist. To worship in Truth means to worship in a biblically accurate way.We put the glory, honor and praise onto Christ and we use scripture as the foundation of our worship and we use it to direct and guide us.We look to scripture as the bedrock to build our church worship service on.All of the lights, lyrics and sound all have a purpose to show biblical truth when we worship. The lyrics of the song are super important because We want to sing songs that are full of biblical principles that honor the Lord and uplift the spirit>SLIDETo worship in Truth means to be honest with God in prayer about the problems you are facing and confronting sin in repentance.Be honest with God in prayer about the problems you are facing. About your pride, struggles and fears. Go to him with an open heart and mind and be forever seeking his will.Worshiping in truth means confronting your hearts desires and asking the Lord to tune your heart to his will.Ps 145:18–19 The Lord is near to all who call on him, to all who call on him in truth. He fulfills the desire of those who fear him; he also hears their cry and saves them.Worship through music is a form of prayer and so we should be praying to the lord while we are singing biblical truth. We are to be a people of worship and prayer.>SLIDEApplication: We must affectionally worship Jesus in Spirit and in Truth.Jesus is for broken peopleThe woman at the well in John 4 was a broken woman. She was an outcast in a land of outcasts. She had 5 broken marriages, and was living in sexual sin by living with a man she was not married to.Jesus sees her brokenness and offers her living water that restores her broken soul.Jesus is doing the same for you. Because Jesus is for broken people. We at church are a dysfunctional family all seeking to be united with Jesus.Maybe your like the woman at the well. Maybe you gave parts of yourself to someone you could never take back. Maybe your tired of giving yourself away to men or women who use you. Maybe your two divorces deep questioning a third. You may have come from a broken home full of drugs and alcohol abuse, maybe your dad never came home, maybe you feel damaged hurt or abused. Maybe you feel so lonely that you don't have anywhere to turn.Maybe your addicted to pornograpghy and can’t seem to find a way to put the phone down.Maybe your pride has damaged relationships with your family, maybe your anger has gotten the best of you one to many times,or youve just lost someone you love and you don’t know how to out the pieces back together.Whatever your going through, whatever happened, no matter how far youve gone or how faar youve fallen Jesus is for you.No matter how many times youve gone back to that same well over and over again looking for temporary fulfillment, Jesus sees you and is calling you to a relationship with him where you will have a well of living water bubbling up inside you.Relationships, sex, money your carer only bring temporary pleasure, its awell that you have to go back to again and again,.But Jesus is the only living water that sustains and refreshes you for all time.Broken people worship Jesus affectionately because they know they do not deserve a relationship with Him.they know their broken story, the fears, tears and trials, yet GodI want to encourage you as we eneter into this time of response, to pour out your heart to God in worship.Let go of the tears youve been holding back, hand him the fears youve been holding on to, and kneal to the lordship of Jesus. Raise your hands in holy worship. Dance and rejoice that the power that raise Jesus from the dead now lives inside you when you beleve.Ps 28:2 Hear the voice of my pleas for mercy, when I cry to you for help, when I lift up my hands toward your most holy sanctuary.Maybe you’ve never done this before but I encourage you to open your hands to God and raise them when we worship.Physical expression of our love for the Lord can feel intimidatingRaising your hands and opening your hands is a physical sign of letting go and giving to God.Its a sign of humility, letting go of your pride.Maybe you have not been walking in humility, maybe youve been trying to live life your own way, id encourage you to Neal at the cross of christ. kneeling physically says Lord you are God and I a not.The wages of sin is death but all who call on the name of the lord will be saved.Maybe you have not welcome Jesus into your life? Maybe you grew up in the church but its been a long long time, friend I want to welcome you home. I want to invite you to worship Jesus in Spirit and in truth.During this time of response our elders and pastors are avalible to pray with you. se has have 4 communion stations, 2 in the front 2 in the back and gluten free on the side. Take this tie to intentionally dwell on the message today and seek to apply the Lords word to your heart.Take time to pour out your heart to the Lord.>SLIDEConclusion - Psalm 19:14 “Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable in your sight, O Lord, my rock and my redeemer.”Worship provides spiritual nourishment for a thirst soul.Small Group QuestionsThis week we learned that worship is about your heart Romans 6:23ESV
