Old Testament Usage
The two terms used for “soul” in Scripture—נֶ֫פֶשׁ (nephesh) and ψυχή (psychē)—both show remarkable breadth in terms of contextual usage. One study of the Hebrew term yielded over 750 uses, which can be sorted into 10 categories. Major usages communicate:
• indicate meanings of desire (Pss 25:1; 42:2)
• personal or individual being (Gen 12:5; Lev 2:1)
• a conscious self (Lev 11:44–45)
• emotional state (Gen 26:35; Job 21:4; Eccl 7:9).
The Lexham Bible Dictionary Old Testament UsageEven animals are at times qualified as possessing a נֶ֫פֶשׁ (nephesh), evident in their animate status (Gen 1:20–24).
Gen 2:7Genesis 2:7 NASB95 Then the Lord God formed man of dust from the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living being. The Soul is Diffrent from the BodyPsalm 63:1 NASB95 O God, You are my God; I shall seek You earnestly; My soul thirsts for You, my flesh yearns for You, In a dry and weary land where there is no water. The root of “nephesh” is to breath in a physical sense, defines a living creature, shows its relationship to “ruach” Which is breath/spirit....New Testement SoulThe Lexham Bible Dictionary New Testament UsageIn the New Testament, the term ψυχή (psychē) is often translated as “life”
Mark 10:45 NASB95 “For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many.”Acts 20:24 NASB95 “But I do not consider my life of any account as dear to myself, so that I may finish my course and the ministry which I received from the Lord Jesus, to testify solemnly of the gospel of the grace of God.Revelation 12:11 NASB95 “And they overcame him because of the blood of the Lamb and because of the word of their testimony, and they did not love their life even when faced with death.RevThere is a difference between the body and the soul, and the possibility of severing soul and the bodyMatthew 10:28 NASB95 “Do not fear those who kill the body but are unable to kill the soul; but rather fear Him who is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.actsActs 2:27 NASB95 Because You will not abandon my soul to Hades, Nor allow Your Holy One to undergo decay.Revelation 6:9 NASB95 When the Lamb broke the fifth seal, I saw underneath the altar the souls of those who had been slain because of the word of God, and because of the testimony which they had maintained; Also how its possible to divide the Spirit and the Body2 Corinthians 5:8 NASB95 we are of good courage, I say, and prefer rather to be absent from the body and to be at home with the Lord.2 Corinthians 12:3 NASB95 And I know how such a man—whether in the body or apart from the body I do not know, God knows—Life after deathPsalm 16:10 NASB95 For You will not abandon my soul to Sheol; Nor will You allow Your Holy One to undergo decay.Isaiah 26:19 NASB95 Your dead will live; Their corpses will rise. You who lie in the dust, awake and shout for joy, For your dew is as the dew of the dawn, And the earth will give birth to the departed spirits.Jonah 2:1–9 NASB95 Then Jonah prayed to the Lord his God from the stomach of the fish, and he said, “I called out of my distress to the Lord, And He answered me. I cried for help from the depth of Sheol; You heard my voice. “For You had cast me into the deep, Into the heart of the seas, And the current engulfed me. All Your breakers and billows passed over me. “So I said, ‘I have been expelled from Your sight. Nevertheless I will look again toward Your holy temple.’ “Water encompassed me to the point of death. The great deep engulfed me, Weeds were wrapped around my head. “I descended to the roots of the mountains. The earth with its bars was around me forever, But You have brought up my life from the pit, O Lord my God. “While I was fainting away, I remembered the Lord, And my prayer came to You, Into Your holy temple. “Those who regard vain idols Forsake their faithfulness, But I will sacrifice to You With the voice of thanksgiving. That which I have vowed I will pay. Salvation is from the Lord.”Jonah 2:1-9The Soul After Death before the JudgementRevelation 6:9 NASB95 When the Lamb broke the fifth seal, I saw underneath the altar the souls of those who had been slain because of the word of God, and because of the testimony which they had maintained;2 cor 5:1-102 Corinthians 5:1–10 NASB95 For we know that if the earthly tent which is our house is torn down, we have a building from God, a house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens. For indeed in this house we groan, longing to be clothed with our dwelling from heaven, inasmuch as we, having put it on, will not be found naked. For indeed while we are in this tent, we groan, being burdened, because we do not want to be unclothed but to be clothed, so that what is mortal will be swallowed up by life. Now He who prepared us for this very purpose is God, who gave to us the Spirit as a pledge. Therefore, being always of good courage, and knowing that while we are at home in the body we are absent from the Lord— for we walk by faith, not by sight— we are of good courage, I say, and prefer rather to be absent from the body and to be at home with the Lord. Therefore we also have as our ambition, whether at home or absent, to be pleasing to Him. For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, so that each one may be recompensed for his deeds in the body, according to what he has done, whether good or bad.1 Kings 17:21–22 NASB95 Then he stretched himself upon the child three times, and called to the Lord and said, “O Lord my God, I pray You, let this child’s life return to him.” The Lord heard the voice of Elijah, and the life of the child returned to him and he revived.1 kings 17:21-22Ecclesiastes 12:7 NASB95 then the dust will return to the earth as it was, and the spirit will return to God who gave it.
