- IntroductionHave you ever gone on a road trip with little kids or I mean, any kids teenagers even they can behave this way? And as you're on this road trip, it seems like the further and further you drive, the longer and longer they're in the car, the more and more they're getting eager to get to their destination . You start to notice a shift in their attitudes where they start heading out and they they're excited. They're like, oh man, I'm so excited to go to Disneyland or go to the mountains or whatever it is.I just can't wait to get there and everybody's happy. The attitudes are good. The mood is great. There's energy, there's excitement . And then the further and further along you go, that starts to change. And then you start hearing that repeated question over and over and over . Maybe every five minutes. Are we there yet? How much longer until we get there? When I was growing up, we would drive and I remember that we would ask those questions all the time. How much longer are we there? And my parents would respond in minutes, but I never understood minute concepts. I was too young and so what would happen is they started responding in TV shows. There was this TV show that we watched when I was growing up. And it was called Davy and Goliath. And it was like claymation and they were 15 minute long videos. And so I remember mom and dad would tell us, oh, we only have about eight more. Davy and Goliath, we have about 12 more, Dave and Goliias. We're only about three more Davian Goliaths, one more Davian Goliath, and they would tell us that. But as you go along, the longer and longer you drive, you start to notice that attitudes get a little worse. That as you're driving along, that energy and excitement has now become impatience, irritability, and from the back seat of the car, you start to hear complaining increase . You might hear things along the line of mom, he's looking at me! He stuck his tongue out at me . He's crossing the line then you hear the I’m not touching you. I’m not touching you as they start to peck at each other and just start to chip away . And then finally, you hear the dad from the front say those universal words, do you want me to pull this car over?Series/SubjectWhat we're seeing this morning as we continued Through the Bible chronologically, is that God tells the people to go and spy out the land of Canaan. And they went and they saw that it was everything God had promised them it was, it was as we call it the Promised Land. God has been faithful the entire time, but as we talked about last week, they took their eyes off of God and they put it on their circumstances. And so then they come back and they don't trust God. They don't trust that God is good. They don't trust that God will provide for them. And so God tells the people of Israel, God tells Moses in…
Numbers 14:27–34 ESV 27 “How long shall this wicked congregation grumble against me? I have heard the grumblings of the people of Israel, which they grumble against me. 28 Say to them, ‘As I live, declares the Lord, what you have said in my hearing I will do to you: 29 your dead bodies shall fall in this wilderness, and of all your number, listed in the census from twenty years old and upward, who have grumbled against me, 30 not one shall come into the land where I swore that I would make you dwell, except Caleb the son of Jephunneh and Joshua the son of Nun. 31 But your little ones, who you said would become a prey, I will bring in, and they shall know the land that you have rejected. 32 But as for you, your dead bodies shall fall in this wilderness. 33 And your children shall be shepherds in the wilderness forty years and shall suffer for your faithlessness, until the last of your dead bodies lies in the wilderness. 34 According to the number of the days in which you spied out the land, forty days, a year for each day, you shall bear your iniquity forty years, and you shall know my displeasure.’And so because they rejected God and they did not place their trust in God, God tells them that they are now going to have to wander around in the wilderness for 40 years, and from Numbers 16-19, we see that wandering period in which they do not get a move forward to the promised land. Numbers 20 is actually one of the darker moments of the book as we see that they their leaders, the ones who have been told to guide them through all of this, die.We see that the people who were leading them out of Egypt, and supposed to usher them into the Promised Land, are not able to do so.Miriam, who represented the Prophets, could not lead them into the Promised Land, for she dies before departing for Canaan.Moses, who represented the Law, could not lead them into the Promised Land, for his death is promised due to his disobedience and lack of trust in GodAaron, who represented the Priesthood, could not lead them into the Promised Land, for he dies as Miriam, for his lack of trust in GodPreviewBut now, in Numbers 21, they are told to head for the promised land They are told to take that which God has ultimately promised them. the 40 years of wandering has passed and now a new generation has raised up and they are told to go head towards the promised land. and so what we're going to see this morning, though, is that this new generation continues on with the sin of the prior generation. We're going to see that God brings a judgment upon those who sin , but what he does is he uses a symbol of their sin to bring healing upon them. You see in the midst of one of the darker moments of the book of Numbers what we get to see is the grace of God. Where we will see is that even in the midst of our most egregious sins God still has grace.PrayerTeach the Text: The Serpent Lifted Up (Numbers 21:4-9)Numbers 21:4 ESV 4 From Mount Hor they set out by the way to the Red Sea, to go around the land of Edom. And the people became impatient on the way.And so here, we're not really familiar with Israelite or even Middle Eastern or Sinai Peninsula geography. And so the Israelites have been wandering around in the Sinai peninsula.Sinai PeninsulaAnd what they've done is they've wandered around there and now God is telling them to go to the promised land. But the problem is, is that they are not able to go directly through the land of Edom. This is what we see in Numbers 20, that they cannot go through Edom.Edom refuses passage into the promised land, and so what they have to do is they leave Mount Hor and they set out by the way of the Red Sea, which is south. The promised land is north, but they have to go south so that they can go around the land of Edom.So here they are. They're told, all right, you're going to go an approach and receive the promised land. But right away, they're going the directions and they're like, wait a minute, promised lane is there we're going all the way that way?So, just like the kids that ride in a vehicle for a really long time, they're like, wait a minute, we've wandered for 40 years. We are at the edge of the promised lane yet again, and you're telling us to go the complete opposite direction . So the people become impatient along the wayAnd here's the thing. We can actually probably understand that. Those moments where you just want something so bad and you can see and it's like, okay, God, he promised this to me. I I know this is from God, and I just don't know why I'm not getting it yet. And so what do we do?We start to complain and we start to get impatient and we start to question, and just like we talked about last week, we take things into our own hands instead of fixing our eyes on God and trusting in him and here again, an entirely new generation is doing the exact same thing they are looking at their circumstance and they are starting to complainThe Sin of the PeopleNumbers 21:4–5 ESV 4 From Mount Hor they set out by the way to the Red Sea, to go around the land of Edom. And the people became impatient on the way. 5 And the people spoke against God and against Moses, “Why have you brought us up out of Egypt to die in the wilderness? For there is no food and no water, and we loathe this worthless food.”The people spoke against God.Now, we have seen the prior generation grumble and complain, and what they've done a lot of times, pretty much that entire time until the end is they complained against Moses. This was ultimately speaking against God, but it was not a directly speaking against God. They were still sinning against God, but it wasn't God, you're the one. It's more like, hey Moses, you're the one God chose. We're not happy with you. We want to go back. Why are you leading us, Moses? You are unqualified.Really, honestly, everything Moses had thought about himself the people were confirming in him like, hey, you're not the leader we want. You're not the one that's gonna take us. What's going on here, Moses? But this new generation has the audacity to go straight to God and to be like, God, I don't know what they said, but in my mind it would play out like, God, what is going on? You told me not you you promised us the promise land. It is right there. And you're sending us that way. What is going on? Are you just sadistic? Are you just vile? Are you just evil? That here they are speaking directly against God and against Moses.Numbers 21:5 ESV 5 And the people spoke against God and against Moses, “Why have you brought us up out of Egypt to die in the wilderness? For there is no food and no water, and we loathe this worthless food.”Yet again they're committing the exact same offense that their fathers committed, but almost even taking it a little bit further . They’re not just going to speak against Moses. They’re going to speak against God. They’re not just going to say that all we have to eat is this mana. They’re gonna call it worthless. The very thing that God is still continuing to provide for them . So we see the sin of the people. We see that the people are rebellious in their hearts. It's a new generation and yet they continue on with the same rebellion that the generation before them had and no matter how much you want to maybe try and justify it, like, man, yeah, they're going in the wrong direction a long ways, they've been waiting for this for for some years . You cannot justify sinning against God. The reason they're wandering is because of the downfall of their parents. And God has been nothing but faithful, and man has been nothing but faithless, and so here again we see the sin of this generation is going against the very sin of their fathers.God’s Response: JudgementNumbers 21:6 ESV 6 Then the Lord sent fiery serpents among the people, and they bit the people, so that many people of Israel died. This is God's judgment upon the people that because they are willing to speak against the Lord, and then this egregious way, **God sends judgment upon them in the form of a fiery serpent.**These serpents, there are differing views on what that word fiery means. Some think that it means that they were just bronze in color so they looked fiery,Honestly, I always whenever I read fiery, thought they were literally serpents on fire, which is like doubly scared because one I hate snakes the way it is, there's no good snake except for a dead snake. It deceived e from the beginning, and here we continue to see that a snake is used as something not good and then on top of that, they're on fire like freakyBut so God sends the serpents that are bronze in color, they wonder that because of what we'll see later on,There is also a view that they are fiery because of the burn that comes from being bitten. And so God sends his judgment, the sting of the snake as a result of their sin, the burn of the snake entering into their veins. And many of the people of Israel died because again, God cannot allow the sins of the people to go unpunished… sin never goes unpunished. But instead it must be dealt with, and here the way God deals with is by sending fiery serpents to bite those who have complained against God and many people diedMan’s Repentance: Confess & RepentNumbers 21:7 ESV 7 And the people came to Moses and said, “We have sinned, for we have spoken against the Lord and against you. Pray to the Lord, that he take away the serpents from us.” So Moses prayed for the people. Here we see the result of the judgment of God. Why were the serpents sent? the serpents were sent so that the people would see their sin, the serpents were sent so that they would understand they are not a holy people, and they are not living according to the standard that God has given them, and so judgment must come upon it because of their sin, sin must be paid for the atoning sacrifice was a way to cover up the sin, and here, because of their sin, consequences came, and the serpents were also sent to lead the people to repentance. And that's what we see here. We see that the people are seeing their loved ones in pain. The people are seeing their loved ones die because of their sin, and so they repent.Psalm 78 recounts the history of the Israelites in the wilderness, and it saysPsalm 78:32–34 ESV 32 In spite of all this, they still sinned; despite his wonders, they did not believe. 33 So he made their days vanish like a breath, and their years in terror. 34 When he killed them, they sought him; they repented and sought God earnestly. They confess their sins. They go to Moses, the mediator for them who has interceded on their behalf multiple times before, and they say pray for us that the serpents may be taken away, remove the consequences of our sin from us.God’s Salvation: Look upon the Serpent Lifted UpNumbers 21:7–8 ESV 7 And the people came to Moses and said, “We have sinned, for we have spoken against the Lord and against you. Pray to the Lord, that he take away the serpents from us.” So Moses prayed for the people. 8 And the Lord said to Moses, “Make a fiery serpent and set it on a pole, and everyone who is bitten, when he sees it, shall live.”God tells Moses, take the very symbol of what they or take the very thing that is the result of their sin, that symbolizes their sin and the consequences of their sin, take that, put it on a pole and all they have to do is look at it when they're bit, when they are bit by the sting of the serpent, look upon this set on a pool, and they will be healed. It's simple as that. Just walking along, a snake jumps out and bites you, turn and look to that and know, I am healed. But it calls for faith. It calls for obedience. They could be walking along and they could get bit and they could be like, man I, I know God says I needed to look at the serpent. I needed to look at the snake lifted up on a pool, but that just seems too simple. I don't I don't know that it's really gonna happen. I know that's what God says, but I'm I'm just not gonna do it. I'm gonna try and heal myself, so I'm gonna suck the venom out and I'm gonna try and try and wrap it up and I'll maybe find some ointment and put it on there and I'll I'll try and do all this other stuff . I'm gonna try and save myself from the sting of this serpent. And they die because they refuse to do what God called them to do if you are bit, turn and look to the serpent that is lifted up and you will be healed. It's as simple as that. Turn. Notice. They confess their sins. And then, when they are bit, they simply turn and look. make a fiery serpent and everyone who is bitten when he sees it.So wherever they're walking, whichever direction they're going , when they're bit, first they have to turn. That's what we call repentance. You turn around and they look upon the serpent in faith, believing God says this is what I have to do. If I look upon that serpent, my sin will be healed, my snake bite will be healed, and they received physical healing.Numbers 21:9 ESV 9 So Moses made a bronze serpent and set it on a pole. And if a serpent bit anyone, he would look at the bronze serpent and live. That serpent lifted up represented the sin of the people being taken away. It was lifted up, removed from among the people. God in his grace, even in the midst of the sin of the people, gave grace by providing a way for the people to not die because of their sins, but to be healed.Preach the Text: Jesus is the One Lifted UpIn the New Testament, we get the fulfillment of what this was being a type of. Just like in Numbers 21, we get a people caught in sin, experiencing the bite of sin, God’s judgement on that sin, and God’s salvation. We find this in John 3,One night Jesus has an encounter with a man named Nicodemus. Nicodemus is a Pharisee, a religious teacher, one of the possibly one of the higher rankings one. And Nicodemus comes to Jesus in the night and Nicodus says to Jesus,John 3:2–3 ESV 2 This man came to Jesus by night and said to him, “Rabbi, we know that you are a teacher come from God, for no one can do these signs that you do unless God is with him.” 3 Jesus answered him, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born again he cannot see the kingdom of God.”Which Nicodemus, this is confusing to him because he's trying to do the math and everything and he's like, how can one be born again? They can't.John 3:4–8 ESV 4 Nicodemus said to him, “How can a man be born when he is old? Can he enter a second time into his mother’s womb and be born?” 5 Jesus answered, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God. 6 That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. 7 Do not marvel that I said to you, ‘You must be born again.’ 8 The wind blows where it wishes, and you hear its sound, but you do not know where it comes from or where it goes. So it is with everyone who is born of the Spirit.”Jesus is talking about the spiritual birth that comes from the Holy Spirit coming into your life, something that even Old Testament writers knew about, Isaiah, Ezekiel, they understood Jeremiah, this new birth that was going to come from the spirit coming upon you. David, the spirit of the Lord will rush upon you, and you will be a new man. We see the spirit coming upon people in the Old Testament, but Jesus is saying there is going to be a second birth where the spirit will eternally dwell with you in. Nicodemus doesn't understand this.John 3:9–13 ESV 9 Nicodemus said to him, “How can these things be?” 10 Jesus answered him, “Are you the teacher of Israel and yet you do not understand these things? 11 Truly, truly, I say to you, we speak of what we know, and bear witness to what we have seen, but you do not receive our testimony. 12 If I have told you earthly things and you do not believe, how can you believe if I tell you heavenly things? 13 No one has ascended into heaven except he who descended from heaven, the Son of Man.So Jesus is saying, there's really only one person that has stood before God. It's been nobody else. Nobody has gone up into the presence of God and actually known the things of God except for one, he who has descended from heaven.John 1:14 ESV 14 And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth.John 1:16–18 ESV 16 For from his fullness we have all received, grace upon grace. 17 For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ. 18 No one has ever seen God; the only God, who is at the Father’s side, he has made him known.Jesus saying, there's only one person that has stood before God, and that is the son of man, and what Nicodemus is missing out on is he's the one that stands before you.Jesus then points back to Numbers 21, He points back and says,John 3:14–17 ESV 14 And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, so must the Son of Man be lifted up, 15 that whoever believes in him may have eternal life. 16 “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. 17 For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him.The Sin of MankindYou see, here's the thing. The sin of mankind that follows the same pattern that we saw in Numbers 21The sin of the people, we saw the rebellion of the people,The consequences of their sin.The confession of their sin,The salvation of God through the faith of obedience that the people had to give. And so what is the sin of mankind? Well, man, what isn’t the sin of mankind?Rebellious hearts towards Godself prideself righteousnessadulterylustangermurderhatredunrepentanceunforgivenessselfishnessThe list could go on and on and on Jesus and the sermon on the mount really breaks it down to every single person is found guilty. He keeps saying you have heard that is said in the law, and that people might be like, well, I never actually thou shalt not murder. I will, I actually never murdered anybody.Jesus says, *but if you are angry with your brother and your heart, you are guilty of murder. You have heard that is said, thou shalt not commit adultery, but I say to you that if you look at a woman with lustful intentions in your heart, you are guilty of committing adultery.*Jesus is showing that the sin is not even just an action. It is a heart problem, one that every single person has, we all are guilty of sin,Romans 3:23 ESV 23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,We all have the rebellious heart of the Israelites. We all complain against God. We all look to our own ways instead of God, and we all are deserving a death because that's the consequence of sin. They were stung by the serpent. We faced the sting of death. We have we have temporary consequences and maybe we have lifelong consequences in this life for some of the decisions that we have made. But there is one consequence that will sting forever and that is the sting of death. The fiery serpents came and bit the people, and it caused many to die while sin has bit all people and it has caused for all people to die.1 Corinthians 15:22 ESV 22 For as in Adam all die, so also in Christ shall all be made alive.Romans 5:12 ESV 12 Therefore, just as sin came into the world through one man, and death through sin, and so death spread to all men because all sinned—The Judgement of GodWell, what we also see we saw the rebellion of the people. We saw the consequences of that. The judgment of God upon all people is his wrath , eternal damnation, eternal separation from God.John 3:18 ESV 18 Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only Son of God.It's not that Jesus condemns you it’s that you are already condemned. You automatically stand before God condemned without hope, without any kind of desire as Paul tells us in Ephesians, you were without God and without hope in this world. You were separated, alienated far off. John is telling us that is how we are that without Jesus, we stand condemned, not that he condemns us, we condemn ourselves. We stand before him guilty, just like the Israelites. Who was it that committed the offense ? So often whenever you read about that, you like to put your mind on God. I can't believe God would do this. That seems a little extreme on God's behalf. We rarely look at the Israelites and look at they disobeyed God. They deserve everything they got and so do I. And so do you. We all stand before God condemned . You see, you have the sin of the people and our sin is many.If we were to line up all of our sins, see, we like to play a measuring game.Psalm 49:7–9 ESV 7 Truly no man can ransom another, or give to God the price of his life, 8 for the ransom of their life is costly and can never suffice, 9 that he should live on forever and never see the pit.Look up passage on ransoming our own life in psalms . We all like to play a measuring game where we we try and equal out good deed, bad deed, good deed, bad deed, and as we stack these up, it's one good deed, one bad thing. Okay, if I can just do a enough good deeds. Oh, no, look, I I committed five bad deeds, so now I need to do five good deeds and let's do a couple more good deeds to try and stack above that, and we we feel like, okay, at the end of my life, it looks like my good deeds outweigh my bad deeds. And so, therefore, maybe I will be able to make it to heaven .But the thing is, is we like the think of one good deed equal to one bad deed. But that's not how it plays out. One bad deed is eternal death. Well, that seems a little harsh. Well, you're not the holy god. Let's say one bad deed is equivalent to a thousand good deeds. You'd have to do a thousand good deeds before you could make up that one bad deed. But in doing those thinking, I just got to try harder. You are doing a bad deed because you are relying on yourself and on the works of the flesh and on the works of the law in which no one can be made saved. If you were to visit the NICU, one thing about them is that they are Sterile environments. They want for you to be healthy, and they want for you to not have any side effects. There is precious life at stake, and they want to take every precaution necessary. Now, if you entered the NICU with a cough, or a runny nose, you may not think it’s that big of a deal. That’s how we like to view sin. It’s not that big of deal. Everybody is struggling with allergies right now, it’s just going around, you’re going to get it at some point. But to those parents and doctors in that NICU, they will see that and they will come upon you and get it out of there. Because they realize that one little germ can be the end of their life. Our sin is a cancer that will end our life. It will lead to death. One bad deed can never be made up by one good deed. When you have cancer, no amount of exercise, no amount of proper diet, no amount of sleep is going to help you get over it. You need for an outside force to come into your body and defeat the cancer for you.No good deed is going to save you from the cancer of sin.Man’s Repentence/ConfessionAnd so what we see is we see the sin of the people, we see the consequences of that sin, and then we see the repentance and the confession that this is what God calls for us. He calls for us to see the depravity of our sin. That is why he gave us the law so that we can see that we are sinners and sinful human beings, and that we cannot measure up on our own. The snakes came and bit people, and they were not able to heal themselves, no matter how hard they try, they would not. The pain would get worse. The infection would grow and death would come knocking out the door faster and faster, the harder they tried. It was to lead them to repentance so that they saw their sin in the law came in to show us our sin that we cannot measure up to God's standard. We cannot save ourselves. We cannot heal ourselves . And so what does God do? God sends a symbol of their sin to be lifted up so that it can take their sin away and bring healing for those who look upon it , just as Moses lifted up the serpent, so too, the son of man was to be lifted up.Jesus is talking about his death, his sacrifice for our sins in which we are told that he took on our sin He became sin for us.2 Corinthians 5:21 ESV 21 For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.Jesus became sin for us. Jesus took our death. He was hung up a symbol of all our sin, a symbol of God's wrath being poured out on him. So that we could live Jesus took our sin so that we could have eternal life that we could have a relationship with him for God so love the world that he gave his only son that if you believe in him, what did the Israelites have to do? They had to simply look in faith and believe if I look at this snake on a pole, I will be healed. All we have to do is look to the cross and say, because Jesus paid my price, if I place my faith in him, I will be healed1 Peter 2:24 ESV 24 He himself bore our sins in his body on the tree, that we might die to sin and live to righteousness. By his wounds you have been healed.Look upon him and you will be healed. You don't try harder, you don't try and fix yourself, you don't try and get your life together first. You look to the son, lift it up. And you will be healed.Isaiah talks about this.Isaiah 45:22 ESV 22 “Turn to me and be saved, all the ends of the earth! For I am God, and there is no other.Isaiah 45:22 KJV 1900 22 Look unto me, and be ye saved, all the ends of the earth: For I am God, and there is none else. There was one way for the Israelites to be saved. And it was simply by responding in obedience with faith. There is only one way for you to be saved. It's not your efforts. It's not how good you can live your life. It is by simply responding to the work of Christ by looking at the cross and saying that is God's wrath, poured out on Jesus so that I no longer have to fear God's wrath, but instead I get a walk in the newness of life that Jesus has given me Jesus came to point us to the Father.Jesus came to be the one lifted up, so that whoever looks upon Him will be saved. He came to be the One who goes between heaven and earth, our mediator, interceding on our behalf. In Genesis 28 we see this account where Jacob is having a dream and he looks and there's a ladder ascending and descending from heaven to earth and angels are going up and down. Jesus has told us is that he is the ladder, he is the one that goes between us and GodJohn 1:51 ESV 51 And he said to him, “Truly, truly, I say to you, you will see heaven opened, and the angels of God ascending and descending on the Son of Man.”The people of Israel had to go to Moses and say pray for us, we go through the ultimate sacrifice Jesus, and we say, Jesus intercede on my behalf, Jesus, I need you, Jesus, I have tried and I have toiled, and I have struggled, and I cannot do it on my own. Jesus, you are the way the truth in the life, and I will never get to the Father unless it is through you and so Jesus I am coming through you.John 3:16 ESV 16 “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. You see, we're all stung. We're all bit by the sting of sin and death .Romans 3:23 ESV 23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,We all experience the consequences of that sting and that we are deserving of an eternal deathRomans 6:23 ESV 23 For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. But God has lifted up his own son so that through him the free gift of God is eternal life . It is available today and it is through nothing other than the sacrifice of Jesus. For God so loved you that he gave his only son, that if you simply look upon him if you believe in him , you will not perish, but have eternal life.Prayer Numbers 14:27–34ESV
