    Peter the legend

    the rock
    Matthew 16:18–19 NIV
And I tell you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of Hades will not overcome it. I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven; whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven.”

    Peter the relateable

    courageous
    fearful
    steadfast
    abrupt
    insightful
    pragmatic
inspiring -soaring beauty of his speeches
    stick in the mud

Reaching for heaven with feet of clay

Steps out of his comfort zone, just to realise that he’s out of his depth
    First to recognise Jesus
    First to fall short
    None of this is linear
most relateable thing - his life is a rollercoaster

    The constant love of Jesus

Peter’s shame at abandoning Jesus left him bereft. He had nothing left to give. So, despite the resurrection, he’s back to tending the nets. Back into the same old cycle that Jesus called him out of on the shores of Galilee.
    back to the start
He’s already encountered teh risen Jesus, so why?
Not a lack of faith in Jesus, so much as a lack of faith in himself.
Peter’s reinstatement leads to commission with Jesus, the great shepherd - feed my lambs, takecare of my shepp, feed my sheep.
    Not works to earn grace.
Jesus’ grace makes it possible for us to do and be the things that the things we cling to prevent us from doing

making something beautiful out of broken things
Making something whole that has been broken.
That’s my plan for our bowl
That’s what Jesus did for Peter
That’s what Jesus invites us into
We may not be “the rock on which he will build his church” but each of us has a purpose and a place in God’s restored and resurrected kingdom of love.

    Peter as an old man:
    2 Peter 1:5–11 NIV
For this very reason, make every effort to add to your faith goodness; and to goodness, knowledge; and to knowledge, self-control; and to self-control, perseverance; and to perseverance, godliness; and to godliness, mutual affection; and to mutual affection, love. For if you possess these qualities in increasing measure, they will keep you from being ineffective and unproductive in your knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. But whoever does not have them is nearsighted and blind, forgetting that they have been cleansed from their past sins. Therefore, my brothers and sisters, make every effort to confirm your calling and election. For if you do these things, you will never stumble, and you will receive a rich welcome into the eternal kingdom of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
