- Think about what happens when a family business is passed down from one generation to the next. The founder built it from nothing—long hours, early mornings, sacrifices no one saw. Then one day, the time comes to hand it off to the next generation. But here’s the tension: the company doesn’t succeed just because the name gets transferred or because the office keys change hands. The real question is whether the next leader actually steps in and starts making decisions, solving problems, and carrying the weight of responsibility. You can inherit the building, the equipment, even the reputation—but until you start operating in it, it’s just potential sitting unused. That’s a picture of what we call the “double portion.”When Elisha asked for a double portion, he wasn’t asking to be flashy or superior. He was asking to be the true successor—to carry the weight, the calling, and the responsibility of what God had started through Elijah. In ancient Israel, the double portion wasn’t about getting twice as much power—it was about becoming the recognized heir. The one who would carry the family legacy forward. And God answered that prayer. But here’s what’s important in our text: the double portion didn’t become real when Elisha received the mantle—it became visible when he started using it.Because in the kingdom of God, inheritance is never meant to sit idle. It’s meant to be activated. And that’s where many people get stuck. They’re waiting for confirmation, waiting for confidence, waiting for another sign—when God is saying, “I’ve already given you what you need. Now walk in it.”Because God doesn’t just transfer responsibility—He multiplies impact when what we’ve received is put into action.Let’s take a look at how Elisha’s ministry started after Elijah was taken up. Go to 2 Kings 2. We will begin reading at verse 15.
2 Kings 2:15–25 NIV 15 The company of the prophets from Jericho, who were watching, said, “The spirit of Elijah is resting on Elisha.” And they went to meet him and bowed to the ground before him. 16 “Look,” they said, “we your servants have fifty able men. Let them go and look for your master. Perhaps the Spirit of the Lord has picked him up and set him down on some mountain or in some valley.” “No,” Elisha replied, “do not send them.” 17 But they persisted until he was too embarrassed to refuse. So he said, “Send them.” And they sent fifty men, who searched for three days but did not find him. 18 When they returned to Elisha, who was staying in Jericho, he said to them, “Didn’t I tell you not to go?” 19 The people of the city said to Elisha, “Look, our lord, this town is well situated, as you can see, but the water is bad and the land is unproductive.” 20 “Bring me a new bowl,” he said, “and put salt in it.” So they brought it to him. 21 Then he went out to the spring and threw the salt into it, saying, “This is what the Lord says: ‘I have healed this water. Never again will it cause death or make the land unproductive.’ ” 22 And the water has remained pure to this day, according to the word Elisha had spoken. 23 From there Elisha went up to Bethel. As he was walking along the road, some boys came out of the town and jeered at him. “Get out of here, baldy!” they said. “Get out of here, baldy!” 24 He turned around, looked at them and called down a curse on them in the name of the Lord. Then two bears came out of the woods and mauled forty-two of the boys. 25 And he went on to Mount Carmel and from there returned to Samaria. This is a very interesting journey that Elisha started his ministry on. We have three different events that take place in the first 10 verses of his ministry. The prophets go on a search for Elijah. They, of course, do not find him. Then Elisha asks God to heal the water of Jericho, which he does. The last 3 verses of our text has the children of Bethel making fun of Elisha and calling him baldy. Which 2 bears come out of the woods and maul 42 of the boys. Each of these are interesting stories and each of these events have significant meanings. Let me take you through each of these this morning. Through each of these events I believe that you will see how this relates to you today.1. The Double Portion is Confirmed Through ActionHave you ever heard the phrase, action speaks louder than words? In verse 15, the prophets could see that the spirit of Elijah rested on Elisha. They could see this change. What they experienced when Elisha slapped the water with the mantle and the water parted was a sign that the Lord was now upon Elisha. He had received a double portion from God and his ministry was now to begin where Elijah left off.But these prophets still struggled to believe. They said in verse 16.2 Kings 2:16 NIV 16 “Look,” they said, “we your servants have fifty able men. Let them go and look for your master. Perhaps the Spirit of the Lord has picked him up and set him down on some mountain or in some valley.” “No,” Elisha replied, “do not send them.”They were determined to go and find Elijah. Verse 17 says they searched for three days and could not find him.Does this not remind of people today? Good christian people who love God, but they tend to cling to the events of the past.It was good back then. They remember what God did for them and it was good. They want to feel that way again. They sometimes struggle to embrace what God is doing now.The prophets kept looking for Elijah while God had already raised up Elisha. Some believers spend so much time mourning what was that they miss what God is doing today.Isaiah 43:19 NIV 19 See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it? I am making a way in the wilderness and streams in the wasteland.Isaiah is declaring that God is not limited by what has happened before or what currently exists—He is able to create something new in places that feel dry, stuck, or impossible. When he says, “I am doing a new thing,” he is reminding Israel that even in their exile and hardship, God is already at work opening paths where there were none and bringing provision where there was lack. It’s a call to stop living only with backward-looking faith and to start expecting forward-moving God activity—you may not recognize it yet, but God is already making a way in your wilderness.God has a new thing waiting for you. God’s next chapter cannot be lived while we are constantly searching for yesterday. The mantle wasn’t proven because Elisha possessed it. The mantle was proven because he used it.Yes, God did something great in the past, but God can do something even better in the future.2. The Double Portion Brings Life to Broken PlacesJericho had a serious problem. This city was a beautiful city, but the water supply was poisoned. The land had potential but the source was unhealthy. What happens if your land is unhealthy? Nothing can grow, can it. So you can see that Jericho was in a bad place and they ask Elisha to step in and help.Elisha goes to God. The one person he knew that could help in this particular situation. If you got trouble or some kind of problem. Take it to the one that cares for all your problems.Look at the instructions that God gives to Elisha in verse 20 and 21.2 Kings 2:20–21 NIV 20 “Bring me a new bowl,” he said, “and put salt in it.” So they brought it to him. 21 Then he went out to the spring and threw the salt into it, saying, “This is what the Lord says: ‘I have healed this water. Never again will it cause death or make the land unproductive.’ ”See, God didn’t fix the land—He healed the source.God tells Elisha to take salt, put it in a new bowl, and throw it into the spring. The salt wasn’t magic. The bowl wasn’t the miracle. God was teaching them something simple but powerful—He doesn’t just patch problems; He goes straight to the source.Jericho didn’t need better surface water. It needed a healed source. And that’s how God still works today. He doesn’t just try to manage symptoms in our lives—He works at the source. What’s your source? The heart. The mindset.God goes to the root of what’s producing the issue. That’s what the double portion looks like—God using ordinary obedience to bring healing at the deepest level. Elisha wasn’t just performing a miracle—he was stepping into authority that changes the source of things. You don’t have to create the miracle. You simply have to obey God and use what He has placed in your hands. We try to make things too difficult. But our God is a simple God. He goes to the source.Great things can happen when we walk in the obedience of God.Families can be healed. Relationships can be restored. Communities can be transformed. When God’s people walk in their calling, life begins to flow where death once existed.Walk in the anointing that God has placed you in. Don’t try to be something that you are not.Think about a water system for a moment. That water system affects everything that is attached to it. If the water is bad in the system, it affects everything attached to it downstream. However, if you fix the source then everything thing downstream changes.God wants to use you to influence the source.3. The Double Portion Carries AuthorityI want to read the last 3 verses of our text again. This is an interesting story. Verse 232 Kings 2:23–25 NIV 23 From there Elisha went up to Bethel. This has to be one of the most misunderstood passages in all of scripture. We read this and we kind of laugh. Looking at this through western eyes is definitely something strange. But I believe there is much more to this story than what meets the eyes.A large group of youths from Bethel mocked Elisha. What they were doing was rejecting his God-given authority.Bethel had become a center of idolatry under Israel’s wicked kings. Their mocking wasn’t merely personal insult. It was open rebellion against God’s prophet and God’s Word. This group of youths were in complete rebellion and they were mocking God’s authority figure.God’s authority will not be mocked. The same authority that brings blessing also confronts rebellion. It was up to Elisha to protect the anointing that God had placed upon him. His ministry was not just about comfort. It was also about truth.Elisha’s ministry begins with both a healing in Jericho and judgment in Bethel.Elisha took the calling that God had placed upon him seriously. It is so important that we as believers walk in God’s calling with courage. You cannot lead effectively if you constantly seek everyone’s approval. As we carry the mantle that God has give us to carry, we must carry the mantle with respect. The mantle is not permission to be popular. The mantle is a responsibility to be faithful.Elisha received the mantle at the Jordan, but the double portion became visible when he started walking in it. He didn’t wait for another sign. He didn’t ask for another confirmation. He didn’t spend years wondering whether he was qualified. He stepped forward. And God multiplied the impact. The same is true for us. Many believers are waiting on God to give them something new when God is waiting for them to use what they already have. The gift is already there. The calling is already there. The opportunity is already there. We just need to step up and put action to the calling.I want each of you to think for a moment. What has God already placed in your hands? Is it a ministry?A Gift?A Testimony?Maybe it’s a calling or a next generation to influence?Stop waiting on another mantle to fall from the sky. Take the mantle that God has given you and step into the anointing that placed upon that mantle.God doesn’t just transfer responsibility, He multiplies impact when we faithfully use what He has given to us. 2 Kings 2:15–25NIV2011
