James 1:19–27 ESV Know this, my beloved brothers: let every person be quick to hear, slow to speak, slow to anger; for the anger of man does not produce the righteousness of God. Therefore put away all filthiness and rampant wickedness and receive with meekness the implanted word, which is able to save your souls. But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves. For if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man who looks intently at his natural face in a mirror. For he looks at himself and goes away and at once forgets what he was like. But the one who looks into the perfect law, the law of liberty, and perseveres, being no hearer who forgets but a doer who acts, he will be blessed in his doing. If anyone thinks he is religious and does not bridle his tongue but deceives his heart, this person’s religion is worthless. Religion that is pure and undefiled before God the Father is this: to visit orphans and widows in their affliction, and to keep oneself unstained from the world.Opening PrayerBreak down into 3 parts:Start the changeDon’t just listen, doIf you can do, and speak accordingly, you are lostCorrect your perspectiveCorrect your perspective to be able to hear what God is telling you.James 1:19–21 ESV Know this, my beloved brothers: let every person be quick to hear, slow to speak, slow to anger; for the anger of man does not produce the righteousness of God. Therefore put away all filthiness and rampant wickedness and receive with meekness the implanted word, which is able to save your souls.Leave behind the anger and harsh words. You can not live righteously and pridefully at the same time.We all came here for a reason. Depravity in the world, family, self? Are you turning away to hear what the Lord is saying?Move away from the brokenness, to hear the instructions on healing.Stop shutting out the feeling of conviction.Conviction is the spirit tapping you on the shoulder and telling you “come inside, you’ve wandered in the dark long enough”We need a faith of actionSimply hearing the word doesn’t grant us anything. We have to act on the word. We have herd this every Sunday for 7 weeks.James 1:22–25 ESV But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves. We must act on our faith. We are not called to live out our walk in these seats, remaining unchanged in our lives. How do you categorize yourself; are you a believer in Christ, or a follower of Christ? Don’t stop simply at the belief that Christ is real. Decide to be a follower of Christ. When we leave here on Sundays, are we like the man who walked away from the mirror forgetting what we look like?Have you really given your life to God, or just said that you did?How often do we neglect to include God in our daily life, in our thoughts, and in our actions, just to call on him to get us out of the mess we got ourselves into? We can’t keep treating God like the guy we call when we need bail money. We can’t listen to the word but live unchanged and expect to hear God when he’s speaking to us.You have to walk and talk the faithA part of the christian walk, is the christian talk.James 1:26–27 ESV If anyone thinks he is religious and does not bridle his tongue but deceives his heart, this person’s religion is worthless. Religion that is pure and undefiled before God the Father is this: to visit orphans and widows in their affliction, and to keep oneself unstained from the world. To live out the example of Jesus, we also have to speak with the example of Jesus.Jesus came to earth and showed love to us, who are wholly unworthy. We are here because we have chosen to accept that love. In the acceptance of it, we must also act out and speak out love to those around us.To visit the orphans and widows in their affliction.Children and widows held some of the lowest social rank in most 1st century societies.Even today, how often do we stop and pay attention to these same people?Do they have a voice? Do we even notice them? The point is, to care for the lowest in our community. The people that the rest of the world forgot, God loves. We are called to listen to them. Speak to them in love. Care about their suffering and meet them where they are.“Faith is not looking at a parachute and saying, ‘this can get me safely to the ground.’ True biblical faith is putting on the parachute and leaping out of the plane.”-Dr Carl Laney, Professor at Western SeminaryClosing PrayerJames 1:19–27ESV
