    What is happening is…

    The Battle For Souls

The fight started over 4000 years earlier, in Eden
    It’s Jesus vs the world

    1) Speaking Truth

    Judgment, Warnings
The last time speaking to a public crowd
    Direct, not mincing words
    Summarize Matthew 21:1-12 and following
    Beware False Teaching
    A works-based religion
A religion of following rules with no love for others made in God’s image
(Notice how - v. 9 - we are told not to call anyone on earth “father” as in a spiritual authority)
Stop following people, and movements… follow Jesus!
    Beware Hypocrisy
Do what I say, just don’t compare that to what I do
    The “Woes”
    Woe - funeral wail
He’s not angry or irritated, just hitting truth hard, to a prideful, stubborn people
Chiasm - focus on what is in center
    (show image)
    V. 13 - Failure to recognize Jesus as Messiah
    V. 14-15 - Superficial zeal, doing more harm than good
    V. 16-22 - Improper use of Scripture
    V. 23-24 - Failure to discern the heart of Scripture
    Matthew 23:23 (NASB95)
“Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! …have neglected the weightier provisions of the law: justice and mercy and faithfulness…”
    V. 25-26 - Improper use of Scripture
    V. 27-28 - Superficial zeal, more harm than good
    V. 29-32 - Ancestors failed to recognize the prophets (who pointed to Messiah)
The truth - and Bible is chiasm with Christ in center, Creation at ends
Jesus is Messiah, had to die, and rise again - the cross is at the center

    2) Weeps for the Lost

    READ Luke 19: 41-44
    Luke 19:41 NASB95
When He approached Jerusalem, He saw the city and wept over it,
This is a burden for lost souls
This world and its systems - lost, given over to evil
People of this world work for the honor and prestige of others
They work and work, in vain
Jesus cries - (see v. 43-44) knowing their rejection of Him will result in judgment against them
God gives them the choice - and it hurts Jesus, it’s personal

    3) Prays

    John 17
    John 17:20 NASB95
    “I do not ask on behalf of these alone, but for those also who believe in Me through their word;
Prayer to prepare for the final battle stage - some major steps:
Mt. of Olives - end times discussion with disciples
    Prepares for his Passover
Prays for Him, them, and US
(we are “those who believe because of the disciples’ word)
    Preparation is over
Time has come - “the hour has come”
And by Thursday - this victory parade turns out to be a display of betrayal
    Jesus still praying, then abandoned
    Jesus appears to be losing
SO WHERE DOES THIS LEAVE US?
WE GET TO JOIN THE BATTLE
    Speak the truth
The world hates the truth - because the truth exposes the evil, light shows the flaws
We here are surrounded by so many “religious”
We live our own chiasm with people
    Rejecting Messiah
Living superficially - doing much harm to other lost
    Rampant misuse of Scripture
Cannot see the heart of Scripture
Guiding others in misuse of Scripture
    Continuing to live for themselves
Rejecting your urging, my urging, God’s Word
    Burden for the lost?
God gives people a choice - and it hurts you when they reject Him
    Don’t EVER lose that feeling
Some of you don’t have that feeling - have that conversation with the LORD
Ask the LORD for that burden - only if you are serious about doing something with it
    You’ll feel crushed
    Like Jesus did
But I give money for missions
Kent Hughes said “There can be no burden for distant unreached people without a burden for unreached neighbors”
    Pray
People all around you are dead - pray that they would be roused by God’s urging
Sin is a major burden - Jesus offered to take that
Pray for friends, family, neighbors to recognize that
We pray for physical health, saddened by physical deaths
Let’s pray for spiritual health, spiritual life!
Pray for effective Gospel preaching in the church
Please pray for me to preach the Gospel effectively
EASTER next week - visitors invited, pray for them to be prepared to hear the Gospel clearly
Pray like we are nearing the end of the battle here
    Because we are!
Pray for strength to live the truth - with Jesus at the center of your life
When we pray for the lost, we’ll live like we are saved
When we pray for others to surrender to the LORD, we’ll live more surrendered lives
Pray, if this is important to you - IF
    It is important to Jesus
    CLOSE
All this was important enough to Him
To speak the truth - right to the end
    To take it personally
To pray for those He came to save
All while knowing the agony that was about to come
Take time to reflect on that this week
    You were important to Jesus
    You ARE important to Jesus
This would be a difficult week for our Savior
So that we could enjoy an eternal forever with Him
What will you do with that truth?
What will you do, knowing that He prepared for, and went to battle that week, for you?
